I dont know much about technical aspects of music but can easily ascertain that the tracks on which these guys sing is so different than the original track.
Why is that so.
It feels as if they are changing tracks to make singing easier.

Case in point:
I heard Himani's Jiya Dhadak even before I heard the original. I feel Himani was good but could not stir the emotion as Rahat. and also felt that she sang on a lower scale than the original.

And this is not for just Himani.. pretty much everybody
Hemu's : Hai Rama.
Nihira's: Kajra re
Vineet's: Aaja Aaja ( remember AS's comment)

As these guys are not singing original compositions, the only benchmark to their singing is the original song and composition.

What do you say. ?

Say If I were to compare songs say
"Tum Bin Jaoon Kaha" by Rafi , Kishore and Hariharan..I would put Rafi and Kishore at par and Hariharan just a notch below but immensely listenable.

If one changes a track to add to it and show of their singing prowess then I am all for it.
Like Shankar Mahadevan on the Saturday Night show with Ruby Bhatia..

Among the singers only ID's gharana has really tried difficult songs and justified it many times and even bettered it .. like Nihira " I love you"

The other gharanas have not tried it .. but the people have sung good many times.

I believe if one is capable of it try it .. you may not be successful but atleast you tried.. Case in point Debu.. sometime mindblowing.. sometimes so banal..

Comments guys as to the singing prowess of the contestants..

Then why does he always get 10 on 10 ??? I don't understand that ... musicians should be able to tell these simple faults, right?

I am not a Vinit fan and never care much for his singing but ev.time I see him get 10 on 10 I always wonder whether I am missing something....

Somewhere in my mind I do agree with you... but ... I don't understand why other mentors would stoop to such level. They are HR's competitors and won't their prestige be at stake?

Yes you are missing a lot .. bcoz in that same episode where AS talks about vinit's track.. he ends up giving him 9 or a 10... "he says points dene mein kya hain.. yeh loh" he also says vinit "bachhe ho jyada mut bolo.."

The show is rigged is evident from many facts ..remember the Jagjit Singh.. Alka Yagnik issue.. they never talked about it.. just live with the blatantly biased result..thats what we could do..

I dont like the format change to a reality show for SaReGaMaPa... but listen to it now for the artistic brilliance of a few...some of them being
Debu: hats of to him for trying such wonderful songs.. sometimes he aces it sometimes he doesn't but atleast he tried.. also refreshing voice..
Hemu: What a voice.. little diction problem.
Nihira: A Class Act.: Amazing range..
Paresh: I just like him for the effort he puts in .. was amazing during the Salman show..

When is music ever about showing off or singing something difficult? The way I see it, music is communicative...if it reaches your heart, it doesn;t make an iota of a difference as to how difficult or easy it is. In fact, a truly gifted singer sings so naturally that you cant even make out he/she is singing a difficult composition.

The only contestant who's done that in this contest on occasion in Nihira. While Debojit has attempted tough tracks, his "effort" is too obvious....somehow not really communicating with his audience. His best to me is still "Rim Jhim gire saawan"...not a diffcult composition, but one that he sang with all his heart.

As for changing tracks and scales, why not? A singer SHOULD sing in the scale they are most comfortable in. Case in point...Himani's "Chitthiye" versus the original Lataji version. Definitely Himani took the scale down, but that didn't make her song any less appealing. Am glad she didn't sing in Lataji's key coz then she would have sounded awful coz thats not her range. Similarly, Lataji couldn't sing in Himani's range either!

I mostly agree with you.. songs dont mean anything unless they touch you..

As far changing a track to make it easy to sing , it takes away the feeling
from the composition and makes it sound bland. No matter how good you are in a particular range.. it takes the spice out of the song.

As far as Lata singing in Himani's range.. that's a strech...but I will give you this Lata will not be able to sing in Himani's voice.

The only sucessful playback singer with a limited range I feel has been Shailendra Singh.. even Sunidhi sounds so much better now and is equally successful..
