I want some hits, will focus on commercial films: Sushmita Sen

A diva in her own right, actress Sushmita Sen likes to live life on her terms but returning to the big screen after a considerable gap, the former beauty queen now wants to focus only on commercial films.

"One of the key things in my life that has been far more important than any commercial success or being in the right banner or the right film is that I never compromised on me. I never take things for granted," Sushmita told reporters in an interview.

The 33-year-old actress, who has been missing from silver screen for two years barring the release of "Karma, Confessions and Holi" this year, which she disowned, says she
is focusing on delivering some hits this time.

"I am focusing on making sure that I do only commercial films. I had done art films too early in my career and I am glad that I did them because they helped me grow as an actor but I want to focus on commercial films and make sure that I have some hits to my credit," says Sushmita, who was last seen in "Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag" in 2007.

The actress will next be seen playing Govinda's wife in David Dhawan's comedy "Do Knot Disturb", produced by Big Pictures and Vashu Bhagnani's Puja Films, which releases on October 2. The film, which centres around Dhawan's favourite topic "marriage", also stars Lara Dutta and Riteish Deshmukh.

"It feels fantastic to be back with the winning team. David and Vasuji gave me my first hit 'Biwi No 1' (with Salman Khan in 1999) so it is like a lucky charm for me. It is an out
an out laugh riot and it is on David's favourite topic of marriage where nobody can beat him," says Sushmita.

She attributes her disappearance from big screen to "influence of lord Shani" but says "that period is over now" with three back-to-back releases -- "Do Knot Disturb", "Dulha Mil Gaya" and Anees Bazmi's comedy "No Problem" early next year.

"I want to make my audiences laugh when I return. So that they get the Sushmita Sen they want to watch on screen rather than give them a Sushmita Sen I want to watch."
Her dream project on Rani Laxmibai and a film on Benazir Bhutto may not be taking off anytime soon due to different reasons but the actress is hopeful to work on them in near future.

"Benazir Bhutto is still on but the only problem is that they have still not got clearance from the Pakistan People's Party. The party has to clear the film because it is a controversial subject and whenever that happens I will play Benazir," says Sushmita.

And as far as the film on Rani Laxmibai is concerned, Sushmita says, "Laxmibai inspires me a lot and I decided to make the movie because I thought what better contribution towards women in India than to show them that their very own history has someone like her. I will definitely make the film when I have the money."

Sushmita, who started her career with Mahesh Bhatt's "Dastak" in 1996, two years after winning the Miss Universe title, dismisses rumours doing the rounds that she is working in a Hollywood project opposite American actor Mark Whalberg.

"There is no truth to it. They keep writing things about me and I keep laughing but I am an actor and if a Hollywood project comes my way I would like to be a part of it," says Sushmita, who has done critically-acclaimed films like "Filhaal", "Samay: When Time Strikes", "Chingaari" and "Zindaggi Rocks".

And despite the poor showing of some of her movies at the box office, she says she has always tried to give her best.

"I understand that all films have different variables that work and you can't control those variables. All you can do is work honestly. And I did it with all my films be it 'Chingari' or 'Filhaal' and the films that tanked also had my equal amount of dedication.

"When the time is right everything becomes right. It is much better to wait...I have nothing disappointing in my life. I believe that if anything goes wrong it does so that the next thing can go right," says Sushmita.

Lol....that was exactly what I was thinking. She did art films early in her career? If she did art films then I wonder what Nandita Das did? Super art films?
And Sush if you need hits, you need to quit spending your time robbing cradles and breaking homes. And you might as well keep your weight and alcohol levels in check.
