I don't know which publisher in the world would take a decision of going into prints after reading a manuscript within the first night itself. Also, I don't know which publisher would cosy upto the writer and call him 'Baby' without even spending a day with him. In short, the publisher has the hots for the writer, who also happens to be a well-known criminal lawyer in India. The publisher in question is Sophia (Udita Goswami), who rushes through her dialogues and hurries through her scenes as though she has a local to catch.

The lawyer in question is Arjun Kapoor (Arjun Rampal) who is sought after and known for letting criminals off the hook with his in-depth knowledge of knowing where exactly the loopholes lie in the law. After one such case, he is distressed at being cursed where he defends his rich friend who has murdered an innocent girl. Disgusted, he decides to give up his practice after creating a furore in the court stating that his friend is indeed the killer. He is held in contempt of court and his licence is revoked. Arjun decides to take off to Goa leaving behind his flourishing practice and girlfriend Urvashi (Sagarika Ghatge).

In Goa he meets with an old man Vivian McNamara who invites him home after a session of fishing in Arjun's speed boat. He gives him a manuscript of a novel he has written and urges him to read it. Arjun is hooked onto it and finishes reading it in one night. Next morning McNamara calls to inquire whether he got a chance to read a few pages. Arjun tells him that he finished the entire script and loved it. He is invited over for a lunch of Goan Fish Curry by McNamara. However, when he reaches the old man's house, there are cops outside who tell him that he is dead.

Arjun leaves with the manuscript leaving his phone number behind. He then goes to a publisher who insists he sign a contract with his name as he is the writer. The book, as expected flies off the shelves and soon it lands on the desk of Yashwant Deshmukh (Sunny Deol) who works in the crime branch in Goa. The book is titled 'Fix the FOX' and its content is on lawyers. From then on, the film picks up speed as Arjun is arrested. The reason; the crimes mentioned in the novel have actually happened and the detailed description proves beyond doubt that he is the murderer because no one will know such minute details described in each of the five murders of the lawyers.

I will just deviate from here. You know there is something amiss when the old man first befriends Arjun because of his huge belly and out of shape face. That is bad make-up which the director tries to hide with long shots. This is where the twist lies in the tale. But the surprise is stored for the end when you know that this FOX has really been fixed. But by who? That is the puzzle that has Yashwant, Arjun and Urvashi in a fix. Together they try to unravel the mystery.

Though the scenes in the beginning remind you of the films of old, the film soon shapes into an interesting thriller. The end, indeed, is quite novel. Director Deepak Trijori has done a fairly decent job.

Arjun Rampal is moving from strength to strength. He is confident in his role; as a lawyer and then as the one who has been fixed. Sagarika Ghatge is convincing too. The girl has potential. She sums up the scene before delivering her dialogues. Sunny Deol as the tough cop who is out to help Arjun is right on target.

This FOX is a thriller worth watching.

Making a suspense thriller is tough. To keep the audience attentive, besides keeping the viewer guessing till the end, requires complete understanding of the craft.

Deepak Tijori had attempted a suspense thriller earlier [most storytellers have a penchant for this genre] and FOX, a complex theme, is more of a challenge for him. So, does Tijori get it right? Initially, yes. But Tijori loses it all towards the post-interval portions. The culmination is the thorn in the flesh.

Strangely, most film-makers in Bollywood just don't give a proper conclusion to suspense thrillers. The wrap up is just not compelling, with most films running out of steam in the final leg. FOX falls in this category.

Verdict? This fox lacks the bite!

Arjun [Arjun Rampal] is a successful criminal lawyer whose knowledge and aggressive interpretation of the law makes him a name to reckon with. He is reputed to have never lost a case and can get anyone acquitted, no matter what the crime. No wonder then, criminals swear by his name.

After years of saving criminals from punishment, one day, torn with guilt, he decides to quit his law practice and change for good. However, someone seems to be unwilling to let him go so easily. Now, Arjun is in a race to save himself and must use the help of his girlfriend Urvashi [Sagarika Ghatge] and a police officer Yash [Sunny Deol] before it's too late.

FOX starts off very well. The suspense builds up beautifully… in fact, everything's going fine till it's time to lift the veil of secrecy. A number of sequences are truly well canned and the characters and situations only evoke mystery. In fact, FOX has an intriguing start and an absorbing middle.

But, as mentioned at the outset, the conclusion lacks fizz. The film ends on a tepid note, with things suddenly turning 'filmy'. The villain's motive seems so bizarre and predictable that it puts you off instantly. In fact, whatever impression you may've generated evaporates into thin air.

Nigam Bomzan's camerawork is striking at places. But why is the camera shaking so much? Hand-held camera movement even during courtroom sequences is disturbing to the eye. Monty Sharma's music is sloppy, although the background score is alright.

Sunny Deol is restrained this time. Arjun Rampal looks perfect for his part. But why is he sporting a hideous wig at the start? Udita Goswami is wasted. Where does she disappear midway? Sagarika Ghatge is convincing. Vipul Gupta is a confident entrant. Ravi Gossain is okay.

On the whole, FOX fails to hook your attention. At the box-office, despite the presence of star-names, the fizz would be missing.

It isn't too tough to crack 'Fox'. You end up realising the identity of the culprit in this suspense thriller 15 minutes after the interval.

If only the whodunit factor could have been held on for a little longer, "Fox" would have turned out to be as exciting as it seemed in the first half. No, Tijori doesn't bring the culprit on screen in the middle of the film but leaves a couple of clues, unintentionally though, in the first hour itself.

A person aiming a shot at Arjun in the dead of the night and a few minutes later an old man suddenly meeting him in Goa - both these incidents, if studied carefully, throw enough pointers for audiences to ponder over the film's plot.

At the same time, Arjun, a top lawyer, publishes a novel titled "Fix The Fox", which goes on to become a best-seller.

The novel includes graphic details of five gruesome murders in the past and this detailing leads Arjun to Sunny Deol, a senior cop at the Crime Branch. It's this build-up till the interval that keeps the thrilling quotient intact for "Fox".

But the turn of events does keep you watching - whether it is the lawyer who only fights for criminals, a sense of guilt leading to a break-up with his rapist-cum-murderer friend Vipul Gupta, a momentary break from his legal partner and girlfriend Sagarika Ghatge, a fortunate encounter with publishing house owner Udita Goswami or his debut novel "Fix The Fox" gaining world wide popularity.

What mars the narrative though is that the production values are below average for a project that has stars like Sunny and Arjun.

The frames don't boast of a rich look to them, the set design is tacky, songs are poor and Goan villas appears to be cardboard sets in Mumbai. Tijori has made quite a few thrillers on television before and watching "Fox" gives an impression that the script may well have been originally designed as a TV thriller.

A film like "Fox" doesn't quite warrant histrionics and Arjun Rampal does well in keeping his act subtle. It's a nice change to see Sunny Deol not really talking through his fists though one expected him to be a little more energetic.

Sagarika gets good footage for herself after her "Chak De! India" role. Udita is required to look good in her first few scenes and she does well there. Beyond that she hardly has a role to play in "Fox".

Even though you start solving the jigsaw puzzle before the characters are able to do so in "Fox", you don't really mind the storytelling. The only trouble is that there isn't any needle of suspicion that points towards various characters. That's because there isn't any needle at all here due to a clear black and white picture emerging quite soon. From a suspense thriller, the film ends up being mainly a thriller.
