Hiya everyone
I live in UK and I'm thinking of studying medicine
Basically I'm trying to decide whether to do Maths as well as Bio and Chem
So anyonw who's studying or studied medicine or knows someonw who is, if you could write what A-levels you took and what uni you got into it wold be really helpful
Also hopefully this hasn't happened but if anyone couldn't do medicine, what did you do instead?
Thanks, TJ

I took Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for A-level, and I got straight offers for Medicine.

they sat that they prefer if u do a non-science/maths subject like Frenh- but i was never disadvantaged or asked abt this

You MUST do Chemistry and BIology for A-level (upto A2). Even if some med. schls say that Biology isn't compulsory, u shud!

YOu shud choose Maths. (becoz soft subjects like general studies/ICT/art aren't prefered). And if u want to do Physics, u need to make sure ur doing MAths for A-level

ALSO pay a lot of attention to the UKCAT exam- this is very important (even though they say that u can't prepare 4 it..well u CAN- and take KAPLAN UKCAT course- its worth the money😊)

hope this helps😊

^^yes i think that combination should be fine👍🏼- check u choice med. schl's websites jst incase😊-also make sure u take Chemistry and Biology upto A2 level😊

(its usually subjects like Art, General studies, Further maths and ICT...that the med. schls have a problem with
😆, coz they're "soft" subjects)

-one more thing, if u've got 7A*s (with at least an A in English and Maths) for GCSEs, then u MUST apply for Birmingham med. schl (as a backup option). I've phoned them, and they accepts almost everyone (95%!)of people with at least 7A*s!

-BMAT is wayyyyyyyy harder than UKCAT (didn't take it myself- but my friends didn't do well in the BMAT😆)

-Make sure u prepare as much as u can for the UKCAT. And there's this really good forum u shud go to:
http://www.newmediamedicine.com/forum/
Its a really good forum site (honestly)- do take a good look there! and there r past interview questions to! (will help u in the future).

I think u've just finished ur GCSEs and going to go to 6th form after the holidays? so just concentrate on ur AS subjects atm😊.

Lol I've written almost an essay here😆
Good luck sweets (and no pressure😊)

chem, bio, eng lit and italian should be fine for medicine.
im also planning on doing medicine at uni ( im doing chem, bio, physics and history)so i contacted a few admission tutors by email and they basically said as long as you have chem+bio and have good set of gcse results you should be ok for most medical schools.
good luck with everything :-)
@Knowalot2 thnx for the new media link, im sure i'll find it v. useful😆and im def. putting birmingham down as one of my choices now😳

Thank you 😊 yeah in the end I decide to go with Maths so that at least if I get refused it'll be on interview not on subject choice and also if I change my mind Maths is important for Pharmacy and Dentistry too

hiya,
i was just roaming around IF, saw this and i think it was very helpful. thx for asking and answering this enquiry everybody :)
actally i came from HK a year ago. this year i'm in year 12, doing maths, physics, chem n bio. and maths is my passion, and since most of the content is familiar to me anyway so i'm doing further maths as a private thing as well. i wanna ask, is further maths really a soft subject? does it really not matter AT ALL when applying to medicine?
i wanna study medicine in england. my personal 1st choice was birmingham. but then due to reasons now, i wanna try for nottingham 1st n besides i am studying in nottingham right now. and then besides those two, i was thinking abt sheffield n manchester.
and i wanna ask, is UKCAT hard? i tried uploading the short version n tried doing it, i tried it the first time n i felt like there r so many Q but they gotta be done in a VERY short period of time. isn't that true? how much time do u really need to start preparing for the UKCAT exams? because i'm already worrying abt them in the beginning of year 12. i dun want to spoil my AS level studies coz of my worry for the UKCAT exams. else i'd be doing good in neither. can anyone tell me the appropriate time to start concentrating on the UKCAT exam and what kind of preparations must i do.
hope i wasn't confusing... :$ excuse me if i was.
take care.
and thanks for reading this.
love,
sumra
