Happy Independence Day
August 15, 2009,
On this very day, 62 years ago India tasted the joy of freedom after more than 100 years of sufferance and suppression under the British Empire. What had been a rich prosperous land, thriving in culture and wealth, had been plundered by the over ambitious English, and it took a lot of bloodshed, struggle and will power to win back what was rightfully ours – OUR INDEPENDENCE.
It's during the time of crisis that a nation often discovers the resourceful, capable and honest leaders within it. Several men and women, rose in the eyes of the people as they braved the over-powering British and lead our country to freedom. Jawaharlal Nehru, who was always soft on children, never once lost ground against an English Lord who tried to silence his cries for freedom. He was a diplomat through and through, always knowing what to say. Mahatma Gandhi, is deemed the Father of our Nation, for no mean reason. He made the people realise that only land can be conquered and beaten down, not the spirit. His non-violence movement, was instrumental to us ultimately gaining the much yearned for Independence for the clutches of the Crown. But Subash Chandra Bose, was an altogether different force to reckon with. Even the air he breathed shrieked freedom slogans and he was not one to take a beating, sitting. He was ready to chase the Brits away even if it meant war. Like these men, there were several brave souls who were ready to lay their life for their country without thinking twice.
Today we walk the streets of a free nation. We are free of fear and few of us know what it is to be robbed of our freedom. Today is a day that brings to one's mind the struggle and the innumerable lives lost, and we must send thanks to those haloed beings for doing what they did. They did not win freedom just for themselves, but for generations to come. India is a free country because of them. Let us take it upon ourselves to not just live freely, but to do our ancestors proud by taking our county to great heights in every sphere. Let's take an oath today!
Happy Independence Day!
