Why all this talk of 'technique/octave'?

I think its high time we moved beoynd the talk of judging the Saregamapa contestants by the "technique" they demonstrate. By now ,we've heard each of them SO MANY TIMES (too many if you ask me!), that we all know exactly who is trained and who isn't, and who can sing in what range, and in how many octaves...etc, etc, etc!

I think its high time we listened to each song as its performed on the day, and then decide if we like it or not. What I mean to say is, even if Nihira is the best trained, or Vineet is your favourite...listen to how they sound on each show, and rate them on the basis of how they sound to you..not on how difficult their song is, or how many key changes they had in the song!

I liked Nihira's song HKHR NOT because it was difficult to sing, but because she made me want to dance when i heard it, because SHE enjoyed the song while singing it. I liked Himani's "Rab hai baghban" song because I felt myself moved to tears when i heard it.

Music HAS to touch the heart and soul. Even Lata Mangeshkar, with the greatest of voices, didn't always shine on each and every song..the ones that touched HER soul, are the ones that reached out to her listeners as well.

Sorry if I rambled a bit much!

Hi music buff,
I agree that at this stage every performance is what matters.Didn't mean to nag you with my comments on octaves and scales.
Was trying to make a point and analysing the versatility of the 2 best girls in the competiton.
I agree that some performances touch the heart and one thinks it's the best for the day.

And you didn't ramble too much....the forum is for voicing one's opinions. Your post had some interesting points.

Cheers

But training and foundation are necessary to sing difficult songs well. Of
course it is not enough to sing a song precisely without feeling but I don't
think that anyone would suggest that Nihira sings without feeling. It
appears that

For example, I know that a cricketer was moved by Vinit but I noticed that he
did not have good breath control and that really took away from the song. I
love that song and it really put Sonu into the upper echelons of the industry
which he deserved with that song. Vinit was a pale imitation of that song
and I am disgusted that these mentors and guests play into this ridiculous
drama. The mentors know full well that Vinit took too many breaths but are
probably forbidden from criticizing this kid! It is really shameful.

Also Vinit's voice shook on the low notes and he had a shaky pick up on
Mein Wapas without the clicks he screwed up -- you can see Himani notcing
it, perhaps they are together.

HR getting out of his seat every time with those drama acts -- also
disgraceful. Why can't he just let the performance stand on its own?

But HR substituting his mom for Vinit's mom, what can you say -- I think
that HR missed the point!
