Here is the mention of the kusa grass in Valmiki "Then, donning fine garments, and reciting the chants connected with the Supreme Brahman, taking the kusa grass in his hand, he (Sri Rama) went to Sarayu." Gita Press translation.

Again i do not think the three ladies commited mahaprayan b'cuz when valmiki has mentioned dhanush ,kavach how can he forget mentioning them...maybe they stayed with their son. or its possible that as per that yug sage thought its obvious for ladies 2 follow their husbands n didn't mentioned it

Other reason for mentioning that Lakshman didn't go to his palace could have been to deliver the sense of shock he felt at being abandoned. Even if Urmila was not around, ordinarily, Lakshman may have just gone to the palace to change from his royal garments to sanyas garments before taking the plunge, but he was so stunned at being abandoned by Rama, that he just headed straight to the Sarayu and ended his avatar there. One version I read had it that when Rama took the decision to abandon instead of execute him, Lakshman started crying and begged that he be killed instead, but Rama refused, and so Lakshman headed straight to the Sarayu and ended things there.

Had the mothers stayed w/ their sons, they'd have been left w/ their sons when their sons were spun off into different kingdoms. No mention is made of that, and it also begs the question of which of the sons each would have gone w/? Would Mandavi have gone to Takshila or Pushkaravati? Vibs is right - nothing can be concluded from the evidence in question.

Incidentally, nothing is mentioned about UMS in the Uttar Ramayan. It's only implicit that they gave birth to their sons, but after that, they could have passed on any time - even before Sita. In the serial, of course, they showed them being present in court and witnessing Sita's vow, but there is nothing in the Ramayan to suggest that they lived even that long.

Most likely, they passed on either between Sita and KKS, or between KKS and Lakshman. I tend to go w/ the former, although like I said before, the evidence is weak.

Significance of the kusa grass:
According to this book Hinduism By Axel Michaels, Barbara Harshav a roll of darba grass is used in a death ceremony when there is no dead body. If the death occurred due to drowning for example and the dead body is not found. As there is no dead body since Rama goes to Vaikunt alive he probably took the role of Kusa grass to signify death.

Is darba & kusha grass the same? I thought that the former was used in death ceremonies, while the latter was used in births: Valmiki used the kusha grass to do the namsanskar of Kush and Luv.

Darba is dried kusa grass. Looks like they used a clump
of kusa grass to signify the dead body in circumstances
where the body was not found. I thought maybe Ramji
took the grass because he went up alive and officially
there is no dead body.

IN VALMIKI RAMAYAN IT IS SAID THAT BHARAT N SHATRUGHAN FOLLOWED RAM'S FOOTSTEP ALONG WITH ALL THE LADIES IN ANTAHPUR....I GUESS IT ALSO INCLUDES MANDAVI nSHRUTKIRTI....ABOUT URMILLA NOBODY KNOWS BUT SURELY SHE MUST HAVE SILENTLY ACCEPTED HIS HUSBAND'S DECISSION SILENTLY AS ALWAYS!
