here's the making of the calender of 2006

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/117/daboo20nm.jpg">

What is the calendar going to be like?

The calendar consists of 24 pictures of 12 male and 12 female stars. Since, it's a desk calendar; each month appears on both the sides of a page, with the picture of one male and one female star on the either side. Generally, men prefer to have female actresses on their desk calendar and females like vice versa. So, it is up to the users to select which one they want.

Do the pictures have a particular theme to it?

The calendar doesn't really have a theme per se, but then the pictures are typical Daboo Ratnani style. For this year's calendar though we have experimented a lot with lighting and also the concept of the pictures shot, as opposed to just glamour shots taken for a calendar. The male actors have been put in to different characters like Aamir Khan is given a Robinhood kind of a look, Abhishek Bachchan is in a wolf-keeper kind of a look.

As for females, they are definitely given a glamorous look but there is a lot of experimentation done with the costumes this time. Esha Deol is dressed up like a Gypsy Queen. Also, we have tried to capture different kind of moods for example; Celina Jaitley is being shot sitting in a closed Jazz bar creating the after hours ambience.

What about the background of the pictures?

We have tried to create interesting ambience for the pictures so that there won't be any requirement to add any effects to them in the post production stage.

However, we do have some straight headshots which are basically very simple pictures on which we played a lot digitally in the post-production stage by adding a lot of funky backgrounds.

Any stars to feature for the first time in your calendar this year?

We have got many stars who will appear for the first time on the calendar this year. We have stars like Kajol, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Rani Mukherji and of course Hrithik Roshan appearing for the first time.

Coming up with calendar is becoming quite a trend these days with every other business group doing it, so what really sets your work apart?

One big difference is that there is no product being endorsed through this calendar which most others do. These pictures are kind of art work, meant for collection and pictures that I have shot for my satisfaction.

I shoot these pictures for my creative appeal, and to promote my work. And I think mine is the only calendar that has the pictures of 24 top stars in one calendar which no one else does. I think this pretty much sets it apart from others.

Besides you might notice that most companies these days concentrate on shooting pictures with female models in swim suits. There might be around 10 calendars like that. But doing something like what I do i.e, shooting 24 top Bollywood stars is quite a task. It takes me around 10 months to plan for the calendar pictures. I started working on it from February; it's only then that I am able to get all the top stars to shoot for my calendar.

How do you select the stars?

I usually select top 24 favorite stars of mine whom I have worked a lot with already, also if there is someone new whom I think has lot of potential, then I also add him/her to the calendar. I choose the actors depending upon my rapport with them, also they have to be comfortable with the pictures, they also should be enthusiastic about it, and give it their 100 per cent and not just do it for the sake of it.

When creating a photograph, do you consider the image of the star to decide the concept of the picture or is it just your call?

I don't make the star look like themselves, I like to give things a twist because people have already seen the stars the way they are, so for the calendar I make them do something new that will sort of push them to another level. We experiment and make them look, say kind of funky or shoot them in a very different kind of outdoors. Like for this year's calendar, I have Kajol on a motorcycle with a highway background, something that she has never done before.

So we try to push things a bit and make them look different. Among all the 24 pictures, no two pictures will look similar. Each image is unique in terms of the star's styling, make up, hair style, lights and of course the concept.

How necessary do you think it is to enhance the pictures digitally?

We do use Photoshop to enhance the pictures. I think it's cool to use the software as they help you give the pictures a desired effect, they make it look different. So in a way the software enable you to push your creativity to another level. And if they are available out there than why not use them?

If somebody looks at the calendar and goes 'WOW!' it makes it worth it. What matters is the job well done and now how it is done.

So for me, as long as it makes my pictures look good, I'm okay using the software available. That is my creative decision. In fact, even this time I have used Photoshop and other effects on my pictures.

Any memorable experience during the shoots?

One memorable experience was while shooting Shahid Kapur's picture. The picture was supposed to have a dark ally in the background with a pipe burst in the ally and there is water flowing in foreground. For this picture, Shahid was clicked in the studio and the image was superimposed on the ally in the background during post production.

In the studio we made him stand in a big tray of water and asked him to jump in the tray so that the water kept splashing and we could get the wet effect on his clothes and shoes which is very difficult to create artificially using photoshop. Hence, we had to do it in real. At the end of that shoot my whole studio was flooded with water and Shahid kept saying that I'll have to pay for his shoes that got ruined. So that was fun.

Usually every shoot is interesting, like there was one with Hrithik Roshan. Besides it is amazing to see the kind of effort the stars put in for just one picture, I am very grateful to them. It feels that the relationship, the goodwill that I have created with them over the years has paid off.

Your six favorite pictures in the calendar...

Shahid's picture that I mentioned before has a complete stamp on my memory. I can never forget that picture and I think most of the people will love that picture too.

I have shot Amitabh Bachchan in London where he is in the middle of Charing Cross Railway station with him getting into the famous black London taxi. In the picture he is all by himself in a busy crowded area with people walking around him and he is just cool not giving a damn about the fact that he is a big star.

The best thing about shooting with Mr. Bachchan is that he is very professional and very quick at giving the right kind of expressions. Even if he happens to be in a bad mood he never lets that affect his picture at all.

Hrithik's picture is one of my favorites, where we had him wear a garland of screws and nails. It is a mid shot in which he is standing cool with all the nails on his bare body. This picture has a high contrast with very warm lighting. I have experimented a lot in this picture with colors using some filters that I had picked up while traveling.
