Beta ho toh Abhishek jaisa
Where do we have sons who do what sons are supposed to do, what it is their duty to do, what they are born to do and what they are expected to do? These are trying times when I hear 8 out of 10 parents complain and cry about their sons. These are troubled times when sons create problems more than solving them. These are traumatic times when sons threaten, terrorise, throw out and even try to kill and sometimes even do in their own evil interests. These are times when so many parents curse their fate for having such sons. It is in this darkness that I must tell you that there is a ray of light. There is a son like Abhishek Bachchan, the son of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. I have always seen him as an ideal son. He is an idol himself now but he is still the obedient son of his parents whose behaviour as a son has to be seen to be believed. What he has done for his 'pa' recently, what he is still doing in his 'pa's time of crises is praiseworthy and I am saying this with my whole heart. Abhishek took charge and care of his 'pa' right from the time he complained about the pain in his stomach. He was there when his 'pa' was rushed to the Escorts Hospital in New Delhi. And he stood like a guardian angel more than a guard by his father at the Lilavati Hospital all the days, till the time his 'pa' was fit enough to go home. He gave up all his work, all his shootings, all his other activities. He was with his 'pa' all the time. He personally supervised every little thing connected with his 'pa's condition. He talked to the doctors. He took vital decisions. He tackled the media. He personally received every visitor and talked to them about his 'pa's condition. He only allowed in those whom he felt should meet his 'pa'. He was not liked for some of the decisions he made but then he knew what he was doing and he also knew that he was doing what he was doing for his 'pa'. He answered the questions of all the visitors, was very courteous with them and even left each visitor right up to the lift. Abhishek was a source of strength for the family. He was a son who knew what a son had to do under the circumstances. He is a son to emulate. He is a son the Bachchans can and must be proud of. I am not saying all this only to praise Abhishek. I am saying what I am because I feel the world would be a much brighter place if we had many more sons like Abhishek and no parents crying in the dark over their misfortune of having sons who are a shame more than a symbol of hope and life. JP - sheer guts
And the dedication of the son towards his father caused endless problems to his producers but none of them could do anything about it. It was an unexpected and unfortunate happening about which no one had any control.

And the one filmmaker who was affected the most was J.P. Dutta. All the days Abhishek was with his father were the dates he had given to JP's multi-starrer Umrao Jaan. Abhishek is the leading man of the film with Aishwarya Rai playing Umrao Jaan. Any other filmmaker in JP's place would have panicked. His blood pressure would have shot up. He could have had sleepless nights. He could have been caught in a real bad state. But JP is JP, a lion-hearted man like he is always. He talked to Abhishek and asked him not to worry about his film at all. He told him to take care of his father. He would make up for the time lost. He would work out another plan to start work with Abhishek. But he said Abhishek had to keep his mind focussed on his father and nothing else mattered. Only a man like JP could take such a decision, a decision which made Abhishek heave a huge sigh of relief. Abhishek will always be grateful to JP and do his best to give JP and his film his very best which is what he is doing now. "I don't have words to express my gratitude to JP. It is not easy to take such a brave decision but I know JP and his gutsy ways. It is only someone who has his kind of guts who can take a decision which some of the greatest filmmakers would think twice before taking.I have always held JP in great esteem. My esteem for him has grown greater and JP has also grown in the eyes of the Bachchan family, "Abhishek says.

It is decisions like this decision which has made JP what he is today, a filmmaker several cuts above the long list of filmmakers we have. Salaam JP.

Time's plans for Rishi
Time has its own ways of working out ways for us human beings, ways which we can in no way understand or try to find out... Take the life of Rishi Kapoor, for example. Rishi started life as a child artist in his father's magnum opus, Mera Naam Joker for which he won the National Award. He made an outstanding debut as a leading man with his father's film Bobby. And then there was just no stopping him. He played the romantic leading man in any number of films for more than twenty-five long years and created a record for himself by working with the maximum number of leading ladies, a record no other actor can break or will ever break. Neetu Singh was his favourite leading lady. He fell in love with her and married her. They had two children, a daughter and a son. He directed a film, Aa Ab Laut Chale and has plans to direct films again. He is now playing father to some young heroines in some select films. Time has passed, sorry, flown like it always does. Their two children, Riddhima and Ranbir have grown up. Ranbir is all ready to make his debut as a leading man. The entire industry is waiting for that day. He may (no, I think he will) make his debut in a film to be directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Anil Kapoor's daughter, Sonam (look, how time flies). And now Riddhima is getting married on January 25, 2006, the eve of Republic Day. It is difficult to imagine Rishi Kapoor the chubby little boy who grew into one of the greatest romantic heroes as a father-in-law in real life. But that is what he is going to be after January 25. Yes, that's what time does, that's how it treats us human beings and leads us in all kinds of ways and directions. Time has a very strong knack of keeping its secrets to itself, secrets with which it plays around with us like playthings and toys. We never know what time has in store for us the next moment. It plays around with all of us, high and low in the same way and helps in making life more interesting, exciting and even mysterious, making us expect life to take all kinds of turns at any moment of time. Govinda - no giving up
The time after Govinda trounced a political giant like Ram Naik has not been very kind to him. There have been many 'attacks' on him but... Now suddenly the bad time seems to have come to an end and better times have just begun. Govinda is a much more relaxed man today. He has mastered the art of conquering all the threats, trials and tribulations of life. He has taken control of himself. He has walked out of all the obstacles in his way. He has learned the art of taking things in his stride. And the most exciting thing to happen to him is his being taken seriously as an actor all over again. Govinda has recently signed three big films, one with his good old friend, David Dhawan, the team which has given the maximum number of hits in the minimum number of years, one with Nikhil Advani who last directed Kal Ho Naa Ho and one with Priyadarshan, the talent machine. Govinda has major roles in all the three films. There are other offers coming in but Govinda has decided to play this new innings on a safe wicket, a wicket which will inspire him to select and succeed. And what about Govinda, the MP? That is one question many politicians from his own party and other parties and the people of his constituency are asking. They seem to be having a feeling of disillusionment with his performance as their representative in Parliament. They voted him in with such a massive majority because they believed he would work wonders but see very little signs of him doing what they expected him to. Govinda, however knows his responsibilities. He knows that he has made promises to his people and he has the desire and the concern to do all that he can as 'a sevak of the janata'. He has plans, some of them major plans and he will talk about them only when he has started working on them. He is not a man who will use his position only as a decoration but will see that his position makes a big difference to the position in which his constituency is. He will prove that he really cares for the people who showered him with so much love and he firmly believes that love has to be repaid with more love. Death - one call away
My friends, all my friends who know me but will never know me
Very often ask me why I can't stand telephones and mobile phones
Why I try my best to avoid them
They ask me how I can manage life in these fast moving times
Without these instruments which are miracles worked by modern day man
And I find it difficult to find answers to tell them why
Could it be because the first time I picked up a phone
Was to inform my aunt (I had no one else) that my mother was dead and lying in a morgue in a dirty municipal hospital
And down the years I have realized how painful these man-made miracles can be
Just one call and your world can change any which way, change upside down...
Like I have met Vinod Mehra just the night before and had a good time
And the next morning the phone on my table mourns the death of Vinod Mehra
Like I have talked to an ailing Sanjeev Kumar about a Screen function I want him to attend and he agrees
And the next afternoon my phone stings my hears... Haribhai is dead
Like I have a heavy lunch with Amjad Khan at 4.30 p.m.
And the next morning my friend, Kulbhushan Gupta, calls to say Amjad Khan is dead
Like my friend, Kulbhushan Gupta, introduces me to Divya Bharati, tipped to be the next number one
And the next morning the same Kulbhushan Gupta calls and says Divya Bharati is no more
Like only recently I call my friend, Vani Tripathi and in jest ask her if she is in Hoshiarpur, Kharagpur or Kanpur.
Her silence on the other side silences me, she is quiet and she whispers "my father is dead".
Her father was a man of letters, a professor, the last of the best of teachers
He had his dreams for his India lying in shambles
But he had faith in his daughter, Vani, who showed him signs of a new India
He was full of hope and happiness with what Vani was doing with her life and for other lives
That one call I made (which I normally try my best to avoid) had changed Vani's world
And they ask me why I hate these telephones and mobile phones
I know I will have to live with them, I have no choice but I also know that I will never like them, forget love them at any time in this life

A belief, a wish
I find it difficult to think of Sagar Sahab as a man who is dead
I find it difficult to believe that the man who wrote 'Aur Insaan Mar Gaya', one of the most soul-stirring-tearing books I have read as a dead man
I find it difficult that Sagar Sahab who was one of the outstanding examples of what a human being can do with life as a dead man
I find it difficult to believe that a great grandfather who could be the best friend of his grandchildren can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that a man who gave so many men and women reasons to live can die
I find it difficult to believe that the man who showed the light in the darkness can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that a man who rose from the ashes and built his own royal empire can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that a man who was so close to God and had a special relationship with Him can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that a man who kept the best of values, humility, humanity, sincerity, sensitivity and all that was closest to divinity alive can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that a man who was almost divine can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that a man who had a place, a smile and all the care for all around can ever die
I find it difficult to believe that death could take pleasure in letting a man like Sagar Sahab die...
I will believe in my belief in all that I believe about Sagar Sahab all my life, what else can I do, Sagar Sahab?
I also wonder why God can't make some humans like Sagar Sahab immortal and make His own world a better place to live in.
