So, I was sitting around, moping, thinking of how heart breaking it will be if Preet is not in the show anymore. And I thought of writing this one shot. I've never attempted one before, so I hope it's not totally horrible. And a big big big thank you, loads of hugs to Bhav for proof reading this one for me. And a piece of heavenly apple strudel is winging its way to Singapore as I write this:)

I would like to dedicate this to: (Apolologise for the multiple dedications, the thing is I'm not very good at coming up with one shots, so was really excited when I came up with this)
Bhav (thanks for always being so wonderful and for being such a great friend, for your brilliant works, you inspire me, all the time. Love you Honey B)
Radz (for always being so sweet, for your wonderful writing which is always a pleasure to read, and for the fantastic (Yes it is!) Khabar Nahi, which gives me so much pleasure every day! Big hugs)
and
Maddy (I was so thrilled to see my name in your Pradz one shot…..that was so so so sweet of you. Thank you so much. Big hug:)

A/N: Harman/Meher and Preet/Ash did not happen in this one. And this is not a confession (ILY) bit.
A/N 2: The link to the song just in case:-[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_7lpKsfX-Y ] Just pasted it here from youtube. Not my link. Credit to the uploader. Hope it's not a copyright issue. Let me know if I should remove the link and I will. Thanks.

Thanks for reading!

Jaane Magar Yeh Nayan.....

"Wow! I just love the song that's coming on," the tall dark haired guy smiled at the girl seated next to him, "Hey! Why did you shut it off. I just love this song."

The girl bent her head slightly, "I don't…"

"You don't like this song! Unbelieveable," someone seated in the rear exclaimed. "Come on Meher, switch the radio back on. I love it as well."

"Yeah! Meher, switch it on already," a girl seated in the back ordered, "we all love this song. Karan, go ahead, switch it on. Ignore Meher. She just doesn't like music."

Karan cast a sideways glance at Meher as he turned the radio on but she had turned her face away, gazing outside.

Dil mera…….. dil mera……. dil mera
Dil meraaaaaaaaaaa
Dil mera dil mera

"Isn't this song wonderful?"

"Preet, I've listened to this song twenty times! And that's just this evening! This has been going on since Delhi 6 was released! And weekends means listening to it the whole day! I'm tired of this song," she told him, exasperated.

Preet grinned at her from his perch on the window, "You know you don't mean that. You love it too. Admit it."

"I'd love it more if I heard it less," she told him dryly, walking past him. "And now, I have loads of work to finish. Enjoy…yyyy…. Preet..eeeet! Let go! I have to go downstairs."

Ignoring her protests, he swiftly pulled her up on to the window seat and onto his lap.

"Preet," she mumbled, blushing furiously, "let go!"

In response, he tightened his arm around her shoulders, pulling her against his shoulder, such that she had to look up into his face, which was suddenly so close that she stopped breathing.

Which was silly, she thought randomly, shouldn't she have gotten used to this by now? She smiled weakly. Didn't one get immune after a while? Not that she craved immunity. Never! She could live like this forever! She buried her face in his shoulder, closing her eyes as he wrapped both arms around her.

Dil gira kahin par dafatan
Dil gira kahin par dafatan

"Do you know why I love this song so much?" he whispered against her hair, blowing a few strands off her cheek.

She shook her head, tilting her head back to look at him. She didn't want to think right now. One body function at a time, that's all she could manage. It was a relief being able to breathe finally.

"When I listen to this song, I can reach out and touch you …." He paused, his voice unusually husky. Her eyelids fluttered closed at the tone in his voice.

Jaane magar……. yeh nayan

"in my very soul," he finished softly, pressing butterfly kisses over her closed eyes.

Teri khamosh zulfon ki gehraaiyaan
hain jahan

"Have I told you how much I love your hair like this?

"Hmmm," she whispered, "that's why it's always like this nowadays."

He ran his fingers through her hair, raising a few strands and inhaling softly, "I love Lavender"

"I know," she looked at him quietly.

Dil mera
uljha hua hai wahin
kho gaya

"Treat it well," he looked her in the eye, his face serious, his eyes dark and intense, "it's my only heart."

She looked up at him, feeling her eyes tearing up. "Preet," she whispered….

"Shhhh……don't cry, sweetheart."

A tear rolled down her cheek at that.

He sighed and kissed away the tear softly. "I love you so much Meher."

"I know," she whispered tremulously, looking up at him adoringly, all her love reflected in her eyes, clear as the sky on a perfect cloudless summer day.

"I've always loved you Preet. Only you. You know that, don't you?" she whispered, leaning against his shoulder again.

"I know, sweetheart. I've always known."

She was startled to feel a jab on her shoulder and she turned around. Back to the present.

"We were thinking of stopping off at Trixie's for dessert. You game?" Karan was asking her.

She looked at him blankly for a minute before realizing where she was.

"Oh!" she said quietly, "No, I can't. I have to get back."

"Oh! Meher, don't be such a wet blanket. Today's been such a great day. We cracked the deal, remember," piped in Anita, leaning forward. "We should indulge ourselves today at least."

"Sorry Anita," Meher said in a tired voice, "I have a headache and really, I must get back. I'll get off here and take a taxi."

"No worries, your place is just round the corner from Trixie's anyway. I'll drop you off," Karan told her and she muttered her thanks. She felt so totally drained.

Tu magar
hai bekhabar
hai bekhabar
Dil gira kahin par dafatan
Kyun gunj rahi hai dhadkan
Jaane magar yeh nayan

"When I heard this song the first time, I knew," Preet looked into her eyes quietly. "I knew I loved you. Everything just fell into place. My thoughts, my feelings, everything. All I could think was that I couldn't think of my life without you in it."

Sipiyon ke honth se
Moti chalak rahe hain

"Remember those days when everything was so bleak."

She nodded slightly, her eyes suddenly sad, as she remembered the difficulties the family had faced during the early days of their marriage.

"Your smile was what got me through those difficult times," Preet told her, taking her hands in his, "You have the most beautiful smile in the world, my darling."

"Nahi Preet, you have the most beautiful smile in the world," she told him, smiling.

"I said it first," said Preet grinning, "So, what I said stands."

"Rubbish!" she told him, smiling.

He laughed, pulling her close.

Gazlon ki sohabat mein
Geet bhi behek rahe hai
Samundar lehron ki lehron ki
Chadar odh ke so raha hai
Par mein jaagu, ek khumari
Ek nasha sa
Ek nasha sa ho raha hai

"You are such a witch," Preet suddenly told her sternly, tweaking her nose.

"Huh?" she looked at him blankly.

"Before you, I was a sensible normal person. Look what you've done to me. You've got me totally wrapped around your little finger."

"Preet," she protested, "that is not true."

"Is true!" he insisted, "You put some spell on me and bewitched me."

"Don't be silly," she laughed, lifting one hand and ruffling his hair.

"Is there a counter spell?" he caught her hand.

"No," she told him, looking pleased, "nothing at all. You're stuck."

"Good! Just the way I want it!" he turned her hand over and kissed her hand.

Tu magar
hai bekhabar
hai bekhabar

"Your doorstep, my lady," Karan joked, and she was recalled to the present.

"Thanks Karan. Bye Anita, Rishi, see you Monday then."

She stood at the gate and watched them drive away.

Suddenly, a big smile split her face, taking away all her tiredness. "Preet," she called out happily as he waved at her from the bench in the garden. Their special bench! "Come join me, Meher," he called out and she walked happily towards him, a swing in her step.

Dil gira kahin par dafatan
Kyun goonj rahi hai dhadkan
Jaane magar yeh nayan

"Preet, I think I should resign. I don't get to spend as much time with you nowadays," she told him after a bit. She was in his arms, the only place she wanted to be.

"But you're doing so well, Meher. You're a rising star. I'm so proud of you, my darling. Don't even think about quitting."

"But Preet,.."

"Do it for me, sweetheart."

"I'd do anything for you Preet. You know that."

He smiled at her and pulled her close.

Khushboo mein lipte mausam
Teri khamosh zulfon ki
Gehraiyaan
hai jahan
Dil mera
uljha hua hain wahin
Kho gaya
Tu magar hai bekhabar
hai bekhabar

Dil gira kahin par dafatan

"Preet, remember the day you surprised me with the layout of the garden," she asked him suddenly and he smiled lovingly at her, nodding.

"The red roses border the entire bed, the white roses make up the inner circle, the pink roses dot the fringes, intermingling with the red, the bicolor roses in the centre and the purple roses encircle the white roses. Right?" Preet asked Meher as they sat on the bench under the Cherry tree in the Garden.

Meher looked at him, her eyes alight with happiness. She nodded slowly, her heart full. This from Preet, who, six months ago had asked her why she bothered with the garden at all. Preet, who had once coolly told her that he had no clue what flowers grew in the garden. Preet, who had now taken to walking in the garden with her after dinner.

"And those are Freesia's." Meher nodded, leaning against him and resting her head on his shoulder.

His arm came around her, his fingers toying with her hair. "I love them the best. You always have Freesia's in our room. You love them, don't you?"

"Hmmmm," she was distracted by his nuzzling her ear.

"Then, the Hyacinths, the Gardenias and the Gladioli, right," he murmured against her hair.

She turned to get a look at him and smiled. "I'm impressed Mr. Juneja. Full marks on the Flower Quiz."

"Marks! Who wants marks?" he winked at her as he tilted her chin and leaned in smiling……

She felt a blush coming on as she remembered what happened after that. She looked up to smile at Preet and her smile slowly faded away……

Tears rolled down her cheeks, slowly at first and then a downpour. And Preet wasn't holding her anymore. Preet wasn't wiping her tears away. Preet wasn't murmuring words of comfort in her ear. Preet wasn't with her anymore……

"Preet," she sobbed brokenly, "Preet, " She sank to the ground next to the bench. A little bed of flowers stood beside it with it's beautiful lay out of freesias. She gazed at the flowers, trying to see his face amongst the flowers as she usually could. She had made this place for him after he had left.

"Please, Preet, please." He never made her plead with him so much. She could feel him most here, in this portion of the Garden. But today, her tears were blinding. She couldn't see him. She couldn't bear this pain anymore.

"Come back for me," she wailed, leaning back against the grass, looking up, trying to picture him amongst the stars, "I don't want to go on….I don't…..I can't…Preet! Come back for me," she wept, curling into a ball of misery.

Heer walked towards her little sister, tears flowing unchecked. Since the days they had been in little pigtails, Meher would always run to her when she was upset. Back then, Heer had always been able to coax a smile back onto Meher's face. Later, there was Preet. Meher had never been without a smile then. Preet had seen to that. But, it had been two years since she had seen Meher last smile. Two years! Two years since a tragic plane crash had taken Preet away from them. While he was crossing the Atlantic on his way back from a Conference in New York.

"Meher," Heer sank to her knees beside her sister who was lying on the lawn, facing the little memorial of flowers she had made for Preet. There was no answer. She sighed and carefully transferred Meher's head to her lap. Meher slept so little these days that it was almost a blessing when she cried herself to sleep. Heer lovingly stroked her hair, gently drying her wet face with her shawl, praying for a little peace for Meher as she slept and wishing desperately that she could make things alright for Meher, like in old times.

A breeze rippled through the freesias, spreading their fragrance over them. As she inhaled the sweet scent, Heer noticed a very faint smile touching Meher's sleeping face. A tear rolled down her cheek.

*giggle* Me!!!! Awwww, what will you do when i write one for you!?!?!? =D
Gosh that was so heartbreaking and tragic *sob*.................. I LOVED IT!!!!!! 😳 I'm a huge fan of people who can write tragedy well, and that was amazing Nonee!!!! 👏
The way you captured the emotions and the two contrsting sides of the story with the past and present was really well done!!!! You almost made me cry............. key word being almost because to date i have only cried ONCE while watching something and that was HC's performance when Prem thought Heer didn't love him and then he cried on the bridge! 😭
I haven't cried for movies like Kal Ho Na ho, or Bhagbhan or any of that stuff............ i am freaky that way!!!! 😆 Anyways i'll stop now!!!! 😳
But seriously that was really really well done Nonee!!! You are a great writer and i'm sure you made Shabo very happy!!!! 😆
Can't wait till whatever is next!!!!!
Love you!!! *hug*

Ouch. I just felt my heart break.

Nonee - that was outstanding! Holy - I for one LOVE tragic fics and this was a level of itself. So heart wrenching, with all the memories you implanted - made me shudder literally. All I can say is, do NOT read this with your PTG's. 😆 (Bhavdi stole mine. *pouts*)

@ Maddy: She'll be high for the next few weeks!
@ Shabz: I gave them back to you!!! 😛
@ Nonee: First off, I could never hate you. Secondly, thanks for the dedication and the hugs and OHMIGOSHAPPLESTRUDEL! Guess what I'll be having for breakfast today!
Anyway, this one was just beautiful. Like shabz said, totalyl heartwrenching. It made me cry. It seriously, honest-to-goodness made the tears fall and made me cry. I loved the way you showed how Meher hated that song because it reminded her of Preet. I loved the garden thing, because it showed that Preet loved her so much that he went to all that trouble to know the names and plant it and everything. And what I loved the most was the way you wrote the pain that Meher was in after Preet died. (I'm crying again and it's all your fault!!) Seriously, N, you're an amazing writer, and you so totally should write more.
Love,
Bhav (:
