The Kidnapped Groom’s Forced Bride...

The headline may sound like the title of a romance novel. But the story is far from romantic. Bindiya Prasad's story is perhaps the most unusual of stories. A smart young woman who is studying for an MA is unable to attract a suitor due to her plain looks. Consequently, she is forced to marry a groom abducted by her father because he didn't have enough money to pay for her dowry. What is it to lead such a bizarre life? We got to know from Richa who plays Bindiya in our new show – Sabki Jodi Wohi Banata Bhagyavidhaata.

"Marriage is the most important event in any woman's life. It's, in a way of saying, the rebirth of a woman. Now imagine if your new life is probably a truth far uglier than your worst nightmare! That is what this story is all about," says the very perceptive Richa. "Bindiya is a sweet girl who is good at academics and is very intelligent. However, she is married off to a man abducted by her father, as he was unable to afford dowry. With this the father's duties are over but Bindiya's life will never be the same again."

"Playing this role has been a major challenge for me. Not because I had to play a girl from a rural setting. It was because of the mental preparation that goes before each scene - to get into Bindiya's character whose life is marked with anguish and uncertainty." When asked what kind of homework the actress had done to be able to do this role, she said, "I met women who have been victims of dowry related violence, or have been coerced into marrying someone they didn't want to. I also read up all that I could about this bizarre practice of abducting grooms."

Richa adds that she feels Bindiya's pain even though her life is far removed from the character she plays. "Portraying the role everyday has brought me closer to Bindiya - to understand her inner turmoil; I empathize with her somehow."

What is disheartening is that this weird practice of abducting men and forcing women into marrying them is prevalent in our country even today. One can only hope that a day comes when there are no more Bindiyas being forced into something this awful.
