Billu Bites The Dust

Barber or no barber, the latest film from the Priyadarshan stable with Super star Shah Rukh Khan playing an important role, Billu, has bit the dust this Friday, and going by initial reports the film is a flop. No one, but no one, seems to like the film and it has got the brick-brats from Shah Rukh Khan fans and the ordinary film goers alike.

Priyadarshan had pickup a Malayalam movie and had improvised it to Bollywood tastes and tried to present it in a new format, unlike his earlier attempts of a similar nature this one just did not click and despite good performances from Irfan Khan, Lara Dutta and Shah Rukh himself the film has fallen flat with little hopes to recover.

Analysts say it is high time Priyadarshan did something original stuff in Bollywood instead of serving just reruns of Malayalam hits. Priyadarshan are you listening?

Billu Barber Box-Office Status and Public Talk
Billu Barber Box-Office Status and Public Talk. Although Billu is not a much awaited or highly anticipated film, the teaming of Priyadarshan and Shah Rukh Khan ought to have ensured a housefull start from it's first day first show (FDFS). The FDFS at Sensation Insomnia, Hyderabad, which is an important theater in terms of crowd, location, black-ticket market to predict the fate of a film. In fact, the guys at Sensation Insomnia are so good at predicting blockbusters that they know when to sell tickets in white and when to sell in black. When I found that tickets were available in advance booking through Easy Movies at Sensation Insomnia, I knew Billu was off to a dull start. As I pulled my car in to the theater (having sneaked out of my office, which is just 5 minutes away), I was shocked to see the place deserted!

SRK's presence, three chartbusters with three leading Bollywood ladies, and Priyadarshan's name should have been enough to pull in the crowds. I tell you, the public knows and they don't need critics ratings, reviews, blogs, etc. The crowd in the theater was more than half empty and full dull and all this made the film even more boring. I feel Priyadarshan should now go back to Malayalam and make intellectual films.

Even his protege AkshayKumar also has grown beyond the point of making silly nonsense with Priyadarshan. In addition, the audience are clever; SRK couldn't fool them with the three item songs. Even the promos were not energetic. There was hardly any crowd for the matinee show too. Saturday and Sunday will see good collections with all the must-watch-on-weekends folks coming out to see, but from Monday the film is bound to nose dive.

Shah Rukh Khan has made a blunder by choosing this script and should have gone for an original script with himself as the lead role with all the other usual suspects of Priyadarshan. In that case, the film would have created waves at the box office. However, this is not an SRK starrer and thus will not list in his tally of hits and misses, but is a big blow to his image as his presence could not ensure the openings. SRK should try and keep away from doing silly sub-plots like the inter-galactic separated brothers, lockets etc..such jokes only work when there is a solid script. SRK must continue to focus on his core strengths and make full fledged entertainers and not waste himself away in such silly sub-plots and roles. I feel sorry for Irfan Khan; such a fine actor, but got wasted in a hopeless script.

This film could have been a treat for SRK fans, but the chance has been lost. As things stand Billu is in the range of utter flop to flop. SRK clarified to media that the film was sold for 35 crores and not 50, but even that might be an uphill climb for EROS International. Will SRK also reimburse the loss like Rajnikanth did for Kuselan? Lets wait and watch. (Courtesy: mrinkenti.wordpress.com)

Will SRK's Billu Barber be a Blockbuster Flop?
Produced by Shah Rukh Khan's home banner and featuring SRK himself, Irfan Khan starrer Billu Barber is a pre-destined Blockbuster-release. The film is Irfan Khan's biggest opener and his career's biggest commercial film, but if the news I gathered is correct the film is on it's way to become a Blockbuster Flop.

The film is made on a modest budget of 18 crores, which means this entire cost can be recovered in the first weekend itself combining domestic and international markets (by banking on the SRK factor). However, I read that the film has been sold for an astronomical price of 50 crores to Eros International.

This means that up untill the 50 crore number is touched the film is not even safe. Now, keep in mind this is Irfan Khan starrer and not an SRK starrer and the film was an utter flop in Tamil and Telugu, which featured none other than Rajnikanth himself. I've seen the Telugu version and looking at the trailers, the music album (SRK has 4 tracks for himself), I have a feeling the film will lose steam on it's first Monday. This is a weekend-family film.

I am surprised that SRK, for all his claims of being a student of economics and understanding the economics of film making (he said he doesn't charge much, but takes a share of the profit), has sold the film for such a high amount. I was hoping all along that the film will be sold for a modest amount (say 25-30 crores and the rest could have been a share of the profit).

Had that been the case the film would have gathered super-hit talk within three days as it reached it's break-even and anything more than that would have only added to the film's stamina at the box office. Yes, SRK's production house could have just taken a share of the profit.

Our film makers need to understand that the below-average remake material they present is not worth the astronomical prices they are sold and brought for. Anyways, lets wait and see if Billu Barber will deliver a hit hair cut at the box office. The key to success for any film, big or small, is the rate at which it is sold. SRK himself said it on television today tat the film poerformance is below average and he is hoping that word of mouth is going to make it a hit.
So I guess the film is below average. The opening was less than 40 % and that is way..way below for SRK starrer with three item girls...

^^ Bad script, repeated ghissa pitta item numbers and Priyadarshan himself are enough to keep the audience away.
Fortunately for us and unfortunately for the stars, the audience has become more discerning which is why films with non-starrers like Rock On go on to become hits and films with umpteen item numbers like Billu are flops. Me thinks SRK needs to find a different marketing ploy now. The item number thingie has become old

Billu Grosses 13.50 Crore Over Weekend

Monday 16th February 2009 10.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Billu grossed 13.50 crore over the weekend. The film managed to do better on Saturday and Sunday after a dull Friday. The Monday collections will decide the fate of the film.

It seems to be heading for first week business of 20 crore nett but if Monday can sustain well the collections could go higher, normal weekday drops will mean around 20 crore at the end of the week.

That's weird, because some critics are loving the film and others find it mediocore! I still hope it picks up!
