Current Bollywood Music and Lyrics- Deteriorating?

Hey everyone,

This is a musical section, so of course my topic is musical. 😳 And you all know how much I'm obsessed with lyrics. 😆 Well, was just catching up on some newer soundtracks -- like Pritam's Billo Barber, ARR's Delhi 6, and something else that I can't think of now -- and they all suck. I don't know what's going on, but besides Tujhme Rab Dekhta Hai (RNBDJ), Hai Guzarish (Ghajini), Tere Naina (Luck By Chance), nothing really stands out. Why is music deteriorating so much? Does it have to do with the fact that so many bollywood movies are released week after week that these MDs are having to mass-produce songs, or is it that there's lack of good talent out there in terms of MDs and singers? Would Bollywood be able to survive if the movie industry and the music industry were separated?

The purpose of this topic is more so leaning towards today's lyrics. What's up with the lyrics these days. If you're completely clueless as to what I'm talking about, here's a little glimpse for you.

We have songs like:
Tujhe Aksa Beach Ghuma Doon, Aa Chalti Kya'.Hai Hai'Hai Hai
Sun Sab Ke Baatein Pak Gayi, Tere Saath Ghoom Ke Tak Gayi
Are Jaane De Jaane De Jhoote Bahaane Se Aise Na Sapne Dikha
Chup!! Bachchan Se Tujhe Mila Doon, Aa Chalti Kya..Hai Hai Hai Hai Hai..Hai Hai..Hai Hai Hai
Hoo Adnan Se Lift Kara Doon, Aa Chalti Kya..
Hai Hai'Hai Hai Hai..Hai Hai..Hai Hai Hai; Hai Hai'Hai Hai Hai..Hai Hai..Hai Hai Hai

I mean seriously? Adnan se lift kara doon kya? 😆

Or this beautiful rendition ...

Mein Tujhse Pyaar Kiya Hai, Tu Hai Meri Jaan
Meri Har Dhadkan Kehti Hai, Mein Tujhpe Qurbaan
Tera Zara Sa Bhi Dhola Jo Imaan, Tu Saala Kaam Se Gaya, Hhaa
Huwa Tera Kaam Tamaam, Tu Saala Kaam Se Gaya
Tera Dil Jo Huwa Beimaan, Tu Saala, Tu Saala, Tu Saala Kaam Se Gaya

I'm at a loss of words here .... tera zara sa bhi dola jo imaan, tu saala kaam se gaya? 😆 Makes sense, but what's the context here?

Moreover, we have songs like "Ai Pappi" (and I STILL don't know what means). In Billo Barber, Pritam has created "Ae Aa O" (whatever the heck that means) and "Love Mera Hit Hit" and "You got me Rocking and Reeling". All this English is put into these songs and its labeled as "westernization", well let me just say that if the west really heard these songs, the west would be rolling on the floor laughing. 😆

I mean "Pappu Can't Dance Saala" was quite a shock from ARR, but it was cute in a sense that it went with the movie. But some of the MDs have just taken it as an example that bad lyrics are allowed.

If I keep writing, then it'll turn into rambling (if it hasn't already), so I'll hold my peace for now, let you guys take over, and then add my own thoughts. Do share any idiotic lyrics that I may have left out, I know there's no dearth of those.

Ciao! 😉

P.S. No, this topic wasn't made because I'm procrastinating studying, but rather because it was an issue that needed to be addressed. 😉 But still, if there are any out there who are procrastinating, please go study, or Sunday night, you'll be giving yourself a lecture, and God knows I've heard enough of those lectures myself the last few weeks. 😆 Kudos to those who manage to stay away and get work done. Can I have some of your work ethic, pls, pls, pls? 😆

WA, I think all these songs are good. Songs are made for entertainment, and sometimes it's the lyrics that give us more entertainment and then sometimes it's the music.

If the song's purpose is to make us get up from our seats and dance, it will be really hard to do with lyrics in the context.

I mean Pappu, Love mere hit hit, and Aksar beach are good songs, I enjoy listening to them. They may not me as melodious as the others but they are equally entertaining and are more joyful.

Anyways I will post more on this, later wards.

In the 90s there used to be a genre in Hindi film music called the "tapori songs". Nowadays that genre has almost completely taken over bollywood music.

I agree with guru that those songs are meant to be funny and are situational to the film but what I don't like is that there is more of this stuff coming out rather than melodious music.

Do you realize how ludicrous Bollywood movies are becoming just because they require such idiotic songs? Every other song is this way nowadays, I haven't seen a Bolly movie in quite a while, but if these "situational" songs actually create such "situations" in the movies, I think I'm better left watching from a distance. 😆

I've never heard that song before. 😆

Mere dil ka order? ... Koi seema na koi koi border? 🤣 There is no seema na koi border to the extent that these so-called "lyricists" are displaying such foolishness. 😆

Making music takes a lot, extensive training, wisdom, natural talent and tapsya. That is by and large missing in the current generation of musicians. The degradation is truly global and right from music, lyrics and arrangement everything has taken a nose dive.

Following stalwarts from league of classical music have hardly any successors:

Gangubai Hangal
Pt Bhimsen Joshi
Hari Prasad Chaurasia
Ustad Ali Akbar Khan

Some time back flautist H P Chaurasia said in an interview, many promising students have to kill their aspirations as they have to earn a living from other fields. Also not many in the current crop can undertake rigorous riyaz and training. In the past Mohd Rafi used to do paanch mombati riyaz, now we have HR, Anu Malik, AS even ARR correcting sur with softwares. There are musicians like Pritam who have a degree in mixing and editing at best. It is said R D Burman and Salil da could play any instrument they laid hand on, now a days musicians are giving job of making interludes to a group loyal to them, finally to kill the remaining spirit we have editing, mixing, software, how will quality come?

Also this is a stage managed era where a brand works. Musical reputation is no longer result of hard work but of oR and brand hype. Plus channels play music night and day to hammer a mediocre composition into your head.

I agree Billo Barber songs suck. Delhi 6 didn't sound all that great either, but I skimmed through the tracks.
