TOP 10: Bollywood romances
SRK, Aamir, Salman...here's to all the romeos and juliets of B'townBuzz18
Mughal-E-Azam
*ing: Dilip Kumar and Madhubala
Mughal-e-Azam is the epitome of an ideal Indian love story because it captures the essence of Salim's 'rebellion' and Anarkali's 'sacrifice' ever so beautifully. Prince Salim, leads an army to fight his own father King Akbar (who refuses to accept Anarkali a courtesan as his daughter-in-law). Salim is defeated and is sentenced to death. Anarkali pleads for Salim's life and even agrees to sacrifice her own in return.
Watch this movie for: Its epic battle scenes, beautiful sets, beautiful Madhubala and her on screen chemistry with the oh-so-handsome Dilip Kumar and not to forget those epic confrontations between Salim and Emperor Akbar.
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak
*ing: Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak will always be remembered for its youthful exuberance. The movie had a rather predictable premise of two families loathing each other, their children falling in love and having to bear the brunt of their enmity. But Juhi and Aamir's chemistry and freshness worked wonders for this overdone concept. The movie won quite a few awards including the Best Feature Film and propelled Juhi and Aamir to instant stardom.
Watch this movie for: Aamir and Juhi's innocent chemistry and beautifully composed songs, which I assure, you will be humming by the end of the movie.
Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)
*ing: Salman Khan and Bhagyashree
Sooraj Barjatya with this movie took a brave step of departing from the violence and gritty films that were so popular back then. Maine Pyar Kiya epitomised what we so often call 'innocent first love' and made Salman Khan a household name. The story revolves around Prem (Salman Khan) and his love for Suman (Bhagyashree) the daughter of an ordinary motor mechanic. Ram Laxman's music in songs like Dil Deewana beautifully captured the essence of the movie
Why Should you watch this movie: For the dialogues which India shall never forget. For example, Ek Ladka Aur Ek Ladki Kabhi Dost Nahi Ban Sakte ( A boy and a girl can never be friends) and many many more.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
*ing: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol
A love story you'll fall in love with - Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, is a story between Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran who meet on a whirlwind tour to Europe and eventually fall in love. But Simran's dad (Amrish Puri) has already arranged her wedding with his best friend's son. DDLJ traces Raj's journey to India and into the hearts of Simran's family members .
Why should you watch this movie: SRK and Kajol. Need we say more?
Silsila
*ing: Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Jaya Bhaduri, Sanjeev Kumar
Released in 1981 and made under the crisp direction of Yash Chopra, Silsila was considered a movie ahead of its times. It dared to cover the topic of extra marital affair that was considered a taboo even in films. The film explores Amit's (Amitabh Bachchan) life as he makes the biggest sacrifice by marrying his widowed brother's pregnant wife Shobha (Jaya Bhaduri). In the bargain he has to let go of his love Chandni (Rekha) who gets married to Dr Anand (Sanjeev Kapoor). Interestingly when this movie released rumour mills went into overdrive with stories of Amitabh Bacchan's alleged affair with his co-star Rekha.
Why should you watch this movie: Amitabh-Rekha in the film, makes us want to believe the rumour mills!
Bobby
*ing: Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia
Bobby, Raj Kapoor's creation, is an all time classic. It marked the debut of future stars Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. The movie was a trendsetter in every way. It was the first to introduce the genre of teenage romance with a rich versus poor clash as a backdrop. After its release quite a few films tried to ape this concept but they could never recapture the freshness exuded by Bobby.
Why should you watch this movie: If you love teenage romances, this movie is the one you should watch.
Lamhe
*ing: Sridevi, Anil Kapoor
Love doesn't die with the person...it lives on forever. Lamhe somehow managed to capture this very essence with the very complicated Sridevi-Anil Kapoor romance. With signature Yash Raj drama, the film told us how love cannot be marked by barriers of age.
Why should you watch it: It's different, it's controversial...but then again it depicts that one feeling which surpasses all barriers...LOVE!
Love Story
*ing: Kumar Gaurav, Vijeta Pandit
Kumar Gaurav and Vijeta Pandit both made a sensational debut with this film. It trudges along a familiar premise of parental objection. But what really worked in favour of this movie was the freshness of the cast.
Why should you watch this movie: If you're a fan of chocolate boy looks and sugary romances, watchDil Hai Ki Manta Nahi
*ing: Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt
Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi is certainly an evergreen and unforgettable movie. I'm not a big fan of remakes but this one definitely did justice to the Hollywood classic It Happened One Night.
Why should you watch this movie: Aamir Khan. A very messy yet very cute Pooja Bhatt. And exceptional music.Jab We Met
*ing: Shahid Kapur, Kareena Kapoor
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Jab We Met had characters we all could easily fall in love with. Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapur) whose love life is as deplorable as his business decides to end his life. But destiny has something else chalked out for him and he bumps into Geet (Kareena Kapoor), a bubbly person who just can't stop talking. She ends up missing her train while trying to get him on the train and this is where they forge a wonderful friendship that eventually blossoms into love.
Why should you watch this movie: The film will tell us just why Kareena and Shahid should never have broken off.
