Behana Re
Saseriye jata jo jo, papan na bhinjai
Dikri to Parki Thapan Kahevay

In today's episode, Santo is getting ready for her marriage. There are a couple really touching, emotional scenes between Santo and her Nanaji, and between Santo and her elder sister, Khemi.

My favorite sister scene where the elder sister is giving advice to her younger sister on how to behave at her sasural. She knows Santo likes harimirch and if it is not available at her inlaws, don't complain. Just eat whatever. And if Santo wants to complain, Khemi hands her a bundle of notes for Santo to make a phone call to Khemi. Also, Khemi gives Santo her not real gold necklace because to her Santo is gold, itself, she doesn't need real gold. To Khemi, her little sister is real gold. To her sasural, well, it depends how Santo will be treated, but Khemi promised Santo to never shed a tear at her sasural.

Basically, what is shown in this episode is the belief that a female child is another person's property and not that of her parents.

The background song says it all.

Behana Re
Saseriye jata jo jo, papan na bhinjai
Dikri to Parki Thapan Kahevay

(What is really effective here in this series is the naturalness that comes out from all these actors when they are doing their scenes. Be it the sisters, or nanaji or the villager ppl)

I was watching this on youtube with my mom & she started crying when she heard this song. She said it's from movie Parki Thapan & original song is sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar. Oh man how I wish that this channel comes to USA so we can watch it on tv. I have always loved Gujarat so much even though I was brought up in USA with this show I am falling in love with Gujarat & it's culture all over again. I love all the songs they keep playing.

Just saw the epi Bavs. And have to admit the song parki thapan and the scenes with Nanaji literally brought tears to my eyes.

Poor Nanaji wants to do so much for his grand-daughter but feels immensely helpless.

when he applies the haldi to her...awwww....so sweet and sad at the same time. Then when he is watching her gather the things she will take with her and nothing more, nanaji was totally besides himself overcome with emotions.

I can see the next few days are going to be happy coz of the wedding but sad...so sad that the pyari si gudiya is leaving.

I loved the last scene too Bavie sis...the chemistry between the two sisters was so natural. Santo unlike the typical Ekta Kapoor serial brides wasn't over-reacting the emotions were just right. I love how the bond between the two sisters was very real...the love was obvious. Santo had immense respect for her sister in her eyes and was listening to her behena like she would if it was her mother. I didn't understand the lyrics but now I get it...and it is indeed beautiful. Mongi added the much needed comic relief. hehe. they are all so cute. Santo has grown on me...i loved how the BANDINI title track played when she was getting ready u know the bride waala theme...that one.

Bavie that was the BEST scene of the episode today. Khemi putting herself in the role of a mother and giving advice to Santo on how she should conduct herself in her sasuraal. And Santo paying attention to every word she was saying. She looked fabulous and the very simple bride and the look of pure innocence on her face mixed with laughter and then tears. It did not look like these 2 girls were acting out a script - they looked so real and natural.

And the scene between Nanaji and Santo - so touching and emotional and again - it looked real.

The song Dikri To Parki Thapan is the standard song played at all gujju weddings during the Bidai time. I have heard it so many times and I cry every time I hear it. The words are poignant and Lata Mangeshkar has given the perfect feeling in her voice to bring out its poignancy.

Thanks for writing a wonderful synopsis of the scene!
You know, I am falling in love with Gujrati culture and language after watching Bandini!
It is so refreshing to see an authentic and detailed description of rural Gujrati customs and traditions shown here and even if one cannot always understand the vernacular dialouges, the actors are so good, that at least one gets a feel of what is going on!
The camaderiship between the three sisters is wonderfully depicted...and so natural! No unnecessary hugging between them, no uttering long lines about how much they mean to one another, yet you can feel how bonded they are with each other! All the three girls do a great job and seem to share a wonderful chemistry!
Soapie
PS: Can anyone upload the title song video on the forum?

hey hema
I loved that scene. These two girls are really a great find and suit their roles to perfection. Though, I found it sad when Khemi puts herself in the mother role (I like Khemi). I have listened to the Lata M. rendition of this song, its very moving.
You know some of these "regular life" scenes enacted by these actors just shoot straight to the heart for not only their emotional content but also in the simple, unpretentious way the actors enact them. Also, the girls seem very young and they are showing the right emotions for a girl who is young and suddenly finds herself at a crossroads in her life -a role change from a daughter to someone's bahu. I don't think Santo grasped everything Khemi was telling her, Santo will remember her sisters speech when she is actually experiencing her other life as a "bahu" at her sasural.
The girls and their grandfather are simple ppl with not too much in material possessions, so their dreams have to take second place to other ppls desires. Their dreams don't matter.
But coming back to the song, in the song the lyrics suggest that the daughter is someone else's possession, property. Nanaji is getting old, he doesn't know when his eyes might shut forever, and all he knows is that the daughter is someone else's property and he has to perform his duty before he leaves this earth to see to it that the girls are indeed given to their "owners" or sasural. I just loved when with his trembling hand he puts some haldi on Santo's face to the lyrics of dikri to parki thapan kahevay playing in the background.

Me too, I think this series is doing a great job in promoting Gujarat-the culture and its ppl. I love the folk music, the colorful costumes, and the jewelery. LOL.
I don't know why NDTV is not in USA? because this series certainly will get an NRI audience, there is no doubt about that. I love the Lata M. rendition.

@Mombs
Nanaji is not scared to die, he is scared for the girls. To me that is the most tragic part. That if these girls are not married, what is their life going to be like in the village. The scenario is that these are young girls and they don't have a male around except for their nanaji, if he dies these girls with their naivete, and innoncence can be exploited by strangers or even the goanwale, there is Jagmohan lurking around.
I like Nanaji with his round spectacles.

@Sammie Behena RE

These two "sisters" seem to have a great rapport with each other and it shows in their scenes with each other. Yes, i know the bride wala theme, that one. That one that is played and will be played with that one and the other one.
So what happens at the wedding ceremony, let see, the groom is kidnapped or delayed by Jagmohan, and punditji is yelling for the groom to come sit at the mandap bc Mahurat time is passing, and DRM takes the place of the chaiwala,
aa chokri saathe hun lagna karish? (has to be with a question mark).

And wasn't it just cute when Santo so innocently asks 'agar tum logon se milne ka mann kare toh kya karu Behna?" So much like a gil asking mom for advice.

Mombs that was so cute and innocent - here is a girl who is not at all ready for marraige. And here she will be under the same roof with this DM. I can almost visualize him calling her 'Aye Chokri' even after they are married.😆
