Chief Minister explains Shah Rukh Khan's Datukship

Saturday October 11, 2008 MYT 7:22:30 PM

Malaysia Star, Malaysia

MALACCA: The Malacca Governor's 70th birthday title award ceremony here was abuzz with excitement with many expecting to see popular Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan receive his Datukship on Saturday.

However, the international star and heartthrob was not to be seen at the Dewan Seri Hall in Ayer Keroh. Efforts are still being made to get him to come to Malaysia to collect his award.

The Datukship award has been questioned by various parties, including politicians and diehard fans.

Some say the actor did not deserve the award as "he hardly knows where Malacca is" while others say he "promoted Malacca in his songs and movies."

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the decision to confer the title on the actor was based on a suggestion by former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin to Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob recently as a means to further promote Malacca owing to the fact that the actor had shot a movie scene here several years ago.

He said the movie One 2 ka 4 was shot at the A Famosa Resort in Alor Gajah in 2001.

"This resulted in many people visiting Malacca since then. The award is given in recognition of this," he said after the awards presentation ceremony on Saturday.

Mohd Ali said awarding international artistes was also a good way to promote the state and country as a location for movies.

"Phuket Island is famous as an international tourist destination because of a James Bond movie," he said, adding that Shah Rukh Khan's movies have penetrated the European, US and Middle Eastern markets.

He said Daim is making arrangements to bring the actor here to receive the award in a special ceremony.

Shah Rukh Khan's datukship is for promoting Malacca in movie, says Chief Minister

Leading Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was conferred a datukship because he has helped promote Malacca as a tourist destination through one of his movies, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said today.

He said the actor had shot scenes of the "One Two Ka Four" Hindi movie at the A Famosa Resort in Alor Gajah several years ago.

"One of the songs in the movie was filmed at the A Famosa Resort. Millions of people who had watched it came to know about Malacca," he told reporters after the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the 70th birthday of Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob at Ayer Keroh here.

Shah Rukh Khan is among the 77 people conferred the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) award which carries the title "Datuk". The date he is to receive the award has yet to be decided.

Mohd Ali described the conferment of the award on Shah Rukh Khan as an investment without cost which would eventually reap a huge return on investment.

"If we were to produce a film on Malacca to be shown to millions of people throughout the world, it would have cost us millions of ringgit," he said, adding that the conferment of the award on Shah Rukh Khan was the idea of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.

Mohd Ali said Daim had proposed the idea to Mohd Khalil so that the actor could help further promote Melaka through his films now that the city was recognised as a heritage site by Unesco.

"Daim will make arrangements to fly Shah Rukh Khan to Malacca to receive his award, maybe in a month's time," he added.

In his speech earlier, Mohd Ali laid out a 10-point agenda for Melaka to stimulate the economy and improve the well-being of the people.

The agenda included wooing investments, strengthening domestic demand, getting bigger federal allocations, and enhancing biotechnology, information and communication technology, selected industries and agro-based industry.

People just Khan believe it!

By MARTIN CARVALHO and NURBAITI HAMDAN

MALACCA: The conferment of Datukship on Bollywood heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan has stirred up a controversy. Politicians, professionals and the man on the street are hotly questioning the wisdom of the move.

Some commented that the actor did not deserve the award as "he hardly knows where Malacca is" and asked whether he had promoted Malacca in his songs and movies.

SMSes received by The Star also hit out at the move, saying such awards should be given to local artistes.

Bollywood Datuk: Shah Rukh Khan is the first movie star from India to be conferred a Datukship.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the decision to confer the title on the actor was suggested to Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob by former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin recently.

Daim said it was a means to promote Malacca and the actor had shot a movie scene here several years ago.

The movie One 2 ka 4 was shot at the A Famosa Resort in Alor Gajah in 2001.

"This resulted in many people visiting Malacca. The award was given in recognition of this," Mohd Ali said after the investiture ceremony in conjunction with Khalil's 70th birthday celebrations.

Shah Rukh Khan was given the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) which carries the title Datuk.

Scores of fans gathered at the Dewan Seri where the investiture cere mony was held yesterday to catch a glimpse of the actor. He, however, did not attend the ceremony.

Mohd Ali said Daim was making arrangements to bring the actor here to receive the award in a special ceremony.

Businesswoman Fatimah Tahir, a huge fan of the star, said she was stunned to hear that he had received a Datukship.

"I thought the award is given to those who have contributed towards Malacca's development.

"I wonder whether Shah Rukh Khan even knows where Malacca is," said the 40-year-old from Taman Melaka Raya.

Lawyer Nizam Bashir from Ujong Pasir here also questioned the decision to award Shah Rukh Khan as he had not seen the actor promoting Malacca in his songs or movies.

"I am happy for him but does he even know he is getting the award?" said Nizam, 35, adding that it would be more meaningful if deserving local artistes were given recognition.

The local artistes who received the Darjah Seri Melaka (DSM) award, which does not carry any title, were singer Goh Eng Boon, popularly known as Andre Goh, comedian Jantan Osman also known as Ali Mamak and 60s singer Mariam Ahmad.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said he was not against deserving people being awarded the Datukship but priority should be given to local artistes.

He noted that if Shah Rukh Khan deserved the award, then so should Hollywood stars Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones who shot the movie Entrapment against the backdrop of the Twin Towers in 1999.

Shahrukh comes, everybody jumps

MALACCA: Looking completely at ease, award-winning Bollywood heartthrob Shahrukh Khan yesterday graciously received the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) from Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.
Clad in a dark blue baju melayu, songkok and the official Malacca state songket samping tied in the style of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee, he was ushered into Dewan Seri Negeri just before 11am by Human Resources, Health and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Capt (R) Abdul Karim Sulaiman.

He was first given a short briefing on the protocol of accepting the award, and being a seasoned actor that he is, he performed his part of the ceremony without putting a foot wrong.

Also present at the investiture were Khalil's wife, Toh Puan Zurina Kassim, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, his wife Datin Seri Asmah Abdul Rahman and about 1,000 guests.

However, as the newly-minted Datuk was escorted out of the hall, protocols were forgotten and it was a mob scene as guests, including some state dignitaries and their wives, took the opportunity to get a closer glimpse and maybe, a picture together with their favourite Bollywood star.
Even Khalil had to wait for the crowd to calm down before making his way out of the hall.

At an earlier news conference, Shahrukh gave a boost to the state government's plan to turn the Unesco World Heritage City into an international movie hub.

"You do not need a big space for a film studio. I am prepared to help the state government in their venture to make Malacca a destination for international film makers, especially those from Bollywood."

"I love the scenery in Malacca and I think it would be a suitable place to shoot a movie," he said, adding that the various attractions and places of interest could be used to turn the whole state into a open studio.

He invited the chief minister to visit his state-of-the-art film studio in Mumbai to get an idea of what was needed to set up a studio in Malacca.

During the joint news conference with Ali, Shahrukh repeatedly thanked Khalil and the state government for the honour bestowed on him.

"I wish to thank the Malacca government for this prestigious award. I feel so honoured to receive this award given by a country that does not even understand my language."

He later said that he already has plans to shoot a movie entitled Happy New Year in Malacca. And he hopes to bring his family for a holiday soon.

After the investiture ceremony, Shahrukh toured the state, visiting Menara Taming Sari and taking a trishaw ride from the Victoria Fountain to the Eye On Malaysia for a ride on the giant ferris-wheel.

He then took the Malacca River cruise, visited Kampung Morten and finally met with fans on the grounds of the City Council building.

He then left for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to board the 8pm flight back to Mumbai.

Datuk Shah Rukh enjoyed in Malaysia despite arm injury
By IANS | December 07, 2008

Malacca (Malaysia), Dec 7 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan enjoyed himself and conquered millions of hearts during a brief visit here despite an arm injury during a film shoot in Mumbai. Shah Rukh sustained the injury a day before he arrived here to receive his Datukship at a special ceremony that was delayed last month thanks to his busy schedule.

A doctor was called to give him three jabs to reduce the pain.

"My shoulder hurts, but the show must go on," the Bollywood star insisted during an exclusive interview with The Star newspaper in his luxurious hotel room at the Villa Istana here.

Khan requested his Baju Melayu (traditional attire) fitter, Ridzuan Kamal, to be gentle when moving his painful arm.

But soon, the 43-year-old Bollywood star happily slipped into the traditional Malay outfit, beamed proudly in front of Bharat K. Ajmera, the ethnic Indian owner of Villa Istana, and said of the dress: "This is something different. It feels very comfortable."

Shah Rukh had only one hour to put on his Baju Melayu, samping (wrap-around waist cloth) and songkok (headgear) before receiving his Datukship, akin to the British knighthood.

But he did not fuss over the difficulty of tying his samping Malacca-style, which was popularised by the late P. Ramlee, Malaysia's biggest theatre personality, in his classic Malay movies.

The formal function over Saturday noon, Shah Rukh took a trishaw ride under police protection during his tour of the Malacca city.

And unlike most international stars who guarded their privacy fiercely, Shah Rukh was sweet enough to let a big fan of his, Zuraidah Abdul Razak, have a look at his royal suite, which cost RM3,500 ($1,200 approx.) per night.

"I'm speechless," Zuraidah said. "I guess I was the only fan of Shah Rukh who got to see his personal belongings."

Zuraidah later presented a Malaysian batik shirt to her favourite Bollywood star.
