At least 90 killed in terrorist attacks on Mumbai, foreigners held up
11/26/2008 4:19 PM ET (RTTNews) - Dozens of people were killed and many others injured in a series of terrorist attacks in different parts of the Western Indian city of Mumbai on Wednesday night.
Around 100 people were killed and 200 others injured, according to reports quoting Maharashtra state Chief Secretary.
The death toll is expected to rise, as many of the wounded are in a critical condition.
Security has been intensified in major cities around the country.
Two police officers and two terrorists were killed in a shoot out. It included the chief of Mumbai's police anti-terrorist squad, Hemant Karkare, Indian television channels reported.
Attacks on seven locations, including luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction, and the crowded Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST), began simultaneously by 10 p.m. local time, reports said.
A senior police officer of the city said the Oberoi hotel lobby is on fire after the attack and an encounter is taking place with terrorists inside the hotel.
Occupants of the Oberoi, Taj, and Trident hotels were evacuated after the attack.
Several European lawmakers were among those inside the Taj Mahal hotel.
Sajjad Karim, a British member of the European parliament, reportedly said he saw a gunman spraying bullets around the lobby of the hotel where he was staying.
He was part of a delegation of Euro-MPs visiting Mumbai ahead of the forthcoming EU-India summit.
40 western tourists are being held hostage at the Trident hotel, according to NDTV.
Blasts were reported in the Napean Sea road area of south Mumbai and in Ville Parle. Terrorists hurled grenades in Santa Cruz, the police said.
Shooting was reported outside the Cafe Leopold, a popular restaurant for tourists in the city.
Police cordoned off the CST and no one was allowed to enter it. India's PTI news agency said two persons armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades were holding up inside the railway station.
Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, the terrorists opened fire in the passenger hall of the crowded railway station and threw a grenade, killing two persons on the spot.
