Movie Reviews: Drona - POST HERE

As the first few minutes of Drona unravel, the narrator tells you about how it all began... in a time beyond time, a world beyond geographical definitions.

But then Drona is a 'fantasy flick' mounted on a lavish scale, and featuring a pretty interesting cast and crew: Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Kay Kay and with a rather experimental and stylised score set by Dhruv Ghanekar.

The plot is a mishmash of Hindu mythology and Harry Potter. It's about a lonely boy wizard Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan) who lives with his foster parents in an European town suspiciously similar to Privet Drive. A magical petal leads him to a wristband which is supposed to be key to achieving immortality. With the help of a royal guard Sonia (Priyanka Chopra), Aditya soon discovers he is the protector of the precious Amrit (which makes you immortal) and understands the truth about his existence. An evil magician Riz (Kay Kay Menon) sets his eyes on the Amrit and this leads to the ultimate battle of good Vs bad, which also involves Drona's long lost parents. Confused? Well we won't blame you.

What we liked about the film:

Drona is obviously inspired by graphic novels which have been adapted for the big screen, for example Sin City. It's got some amazing special effects for a Hindi film. And the director's intention to create a make-believe world with characters zipping across continents and time zones, is stuff of childhood fantasies. The whole sequence in which Aditya is transformed to Drona has also been executed well. Even if it is all too predictable.

But once he becomes Drona everything seems to happen too easily.

What is not so magical after all

Vague clues written in incomprehensible Hindi and Sanskrit, leading Drona to his goal, the complete lack of information about what exactly are his strengths, (by simply lifting his sword and chanting a random mantra Drona gets new sets of powers during the course of every fight) are just some of the many questions that are left unanswered.

Morever, Drona, hardly ever fights! For most of the film it's his sexy guard who takes care of all the action or the evil magician who is getting the better of him. Come on AB, we have paid to watch you knock the daylights off all evildoers. Why so much rona Mr Drona?

The magician Riz who lives in a world of his own, sits all alone in a castle while his few odd caped soldiers get knocked out in single blows. Certainly not the kind of guy who can rule the world. His character is on the lines of a Spy Kids villain who has a reality show of his own. But what makes him so dangerous is never known.

Performances

It's however Kay Kay's convincing performance that keeps you glued to the screen. His act is a mix of Jim Carey's Riddler and Heath Ledger's Joker and even though he goes over the top (all flamboyant super villains do that) in a few scenes he towers above the rest.

Priyanka Chopra is once again saddled with a disastrous wardrobe but rocks in the action sequences. From Don to Drona she is just getting better with the punches. But when Drona finally decides to show some muscle, her oh-so-powerful character is suddenly relegated to being the hero's arm candy.

Jaya Bachchan's role as Aditya's mother is the weakest link in the story. The mother-son reunion scene looks straight out of K3G! But if that sequence made you shed a tear here it evokes unintentional laughter. Jaya Bachchan has exactly a single expression that of being in perpetual shock. And she should do her fans a favour by not doing any more of these cranky, depressed mommy roles.

You do not need a compulsory maa-beta emotional track for a film to work. In fact, Behl surprisingly sticks to a number of done to death clichs. Even the songs come at the most predictable moments. You have the intro-dance number, a mother-son lullaby, a romantic song when the protagonists realise they are in love and a closing music video. Dhruv Ghanevar's experimental score is absolutely ineffective on screen.

Yet it's Drona's story, so everything can be forgiven if his sword can cut through the screen and capture your hearts. Krrish despite its numerous clichs worked because you rooted for Hrithik every time he flew. Abhishek says his lines sincerely but for mankind's only hope he looks terribly out of shape. His shabby hair, stubble and ill-fitted white costume hardly make him the super hero kids would like to imitate. Because if Drona is actually meant for kids, it's way too dull with complicated dialogues for the little ones.

Flashback to any fantasy or superhero film that you have liked. Apart from the action, what stays with you are the dialogues, replete with memorable one-liners or wisecracks. Drona's dialogues have neither the bite nor the wit to engage you. Everyone is forever frowning and the 'wannabe' comic book fantasy ends up taking itself too seriously.

Verdict: Drona threatens to return as a sequel. We just hope in his second outing Drona gives the audiences something to cheer about and not an unintentionally comic rehash of Amar Chitra Katha. The great styling notwithstanding, this Drona is more of a groan(a).

Drona - A load of trash!

Sanskriti Media

Last Updated: October 01, 2008 11:50:03

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Kay Kay Menon, Jaya Bachchan

Producer: Shrishti Arya

Director: Goldie Behl

Rating:
**

What a load of trash! Feels like forty years worth of super hero films of the East and the West recycled to create this film. When an orphaned Drona as a child is forced to live with his abusive aunt and spoilt cousin you are forcefully reminded of Harry Potter then you're plunged into a crass imitation of 1980s video game like atmosphere that is supposedly the villain's den. Then when Drona finds his bracelet it takes you right back to Mr India. If Drona had potential, it's been ruined by pure uninspiring film direction by Goldie Behl.

So Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan) grows up with resentment in his heart. He's never known what the love of a parent is and yearns for it. Cut to an elaborately long song where Abhishek does the jazz dance reminiscent of the 1970s Hollywood films for no reason whatsoever. Director Goldie Behl decides this is the best time to run the introduction titles. By this time you've already zoned out and decided the film is not worth more than two-and-a-half stars. As the film continues, you're not proved wrong.

The next scene takes you to a crude sfx created environment where the supposed villain Riz Raizada (Kay Kay Menon) creates a clone of himself using a drop of blood and some weird electricity passing through the globe. The rating just dropped to one-and-a-half stars. But then you see the new born Kay Kay Menon perform and you think there maybe more to this film.

Come another day, a fated meeting between Riz Raizada and Aditya has the former realise this is his arch enemy Drona. Riz immediately sends his men to chase Aditya while the frightened Aditya is surrounded by all these goons trying to protect him. Aditya doesn't understand why. Before he knows anything, he's hit by a poisoned dart, surrounded by yellow bodysuit clad men you can only assume are the villains before a gorgeous looking beauty pulling some fast moves to beat the living daylights out of the bad guys; nicely done. Then Aditya takes about a minute more to pass out during which the dusky beauty stares on. Clearly editing is not a strong point of the film.

A song once again, and an item number at that, has this beauty Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) stomping around with black half naked men while her "Adi Sa" regains consciousness in the basement and discovers his pictures stuck all over the wall. Apparently, songs are not the film's asset either.

Then Sonia tells Aditya of him being Drona, the chosen one to protect the elixir of life from demons. From there she takes him to his mother who had cast him away as a child to protect him. A shivering Jaya Bachchan walks towards her son, her voice clenched with emotion. Abhishek is expressionless. Later, mother and son spend time together as she tells him of how his father was killed by a demon who is now after him. Abhishek is still expressionless.

They're immediately interrupted by Riz who turns Jaya Bachchan into stone and promises to undo the magic if he comes back with the elixir. Here, Aditya finally transforms to Drona. He's still expressionless!

So… A walking statue as a lead called Abhishek Bachchan, always tearful actress named Priyanka Chopra and an aunt Jaya Bachchan doing a cameo. Duh! Kay Kay Menon is just about the only good thing to have happened to the film. Children might just take to this film. It's a definite no-no for anyone else.

Reads a long review? The film is infinitely longer and amply more torturous.
one more review, i guess one more flop for abhi!!

Goldie Behl who last directed Abhishek Bachchan in the box-office dud Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai is back with a superhero movie titled Drona. Abhishek Bachchan portrays the title superhero role with Priyanka Chopra as his bodyguard. Kay Kay Menon is Ritz Raizada, the main villian. The buzz was that about 22 crores was spent solely on Kay Kay's character in a film which was made at a budget of 90 crores (according to Yahoo) and insured for 50 crores!

Drona is about an orphan Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan), who has never experienced or felt love. The only thing that gives Aditya comfort is a magical blue rose petal that comes wafting into his room, making him smile through his tears. One fine day, the blue petal leads him to a beautiful Kada (a thick bangle like bracelet), which he starts wearing around his wrist. The Evil Riz Raizada (Kay Kay Menon) a descendant of the Asuras (Demons) has become by now desperate in his quest for the special 'Amrith', the only missing link in his grand plan of taking over the world. To get to the Amrith, he knows he will have to defeat Drona. But Riz is unaware of who and where Drona is!

Soon at the Riz magic show, Aditya and Riz come face to face. Riz sees the kada around Aditya's hand, and recognises him as Drona. Aditya is now running for his life. Just as he is about to be captured by Riz, Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) comes to his rescue. She reveals her own identity i.e Drona's bodyguard and Aditya's real identity to him but he refuses to believe he is Drona, the savior of the world. Drona is in real the son of Queen Jayati Devi (Jaya Bachchan)!

The fight now is between the good and the evil. Its Drona versus Riz Raizada! Drona has to succeed to save his mother and the world!

Drona Review

On asked what the audience should expect from Drona, Abhishek said 'I want them to expect a lot. I never say this, but I want them (the audience) to expect the world. Goldie proved that my expectations weren't high enough. So I want them to expect a lot more.' Woah, not bad I thought! Yet, not trusting Abhishek as I read something similar from him about Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, I went in with low expectations.

And yet I was heavily disappointed. Disappointed to see Abhishek being part of such a poorly directed low quality movie. Disappointed for the fact that a huge amount of money was wasted on great special effects in a horribly illogical film!

Gustaki Maaf are Kay Kay's two most favorite words in the movie. Gustaki Maaf Goldie Behl saab, but seriously what were you thinking? Even a 12 year old school kid could have scripted a better superhero story for his school project! Its hard to believe I just saw a movie as bad as Drona. Try figuring this out..

Drona and his bodyguard Sonia are in the middle of a vast desert and out of nowhere, Sonia is pulled into a huge sea! Sea in a desert? Update: Such a location where the Desert meets the sea does exist! Director Goldie Behl says 'We got exactly that place it was 'Desert meets the Ocean'. After seeing this Abhishek was stunned to see such a fantastic location.' Which century or era does this movie belong to? We start off with a modern town with all the high funda cars, cut to the next scene we have a palace in a desert that looks dated, back to the early regime of kings! Drona is warned, open the door, you'll meet death. He opens and voila out comes a ferocious and filthy looking monster. One punch from our absolutely unfit-for-a-superhero-role Abhishek, down goes the monster! Jaya Bachchan (Drona's mother) is mummified, yet tears trickle from her eyes!
  • If Love Story 2050 had the butterfly which magically assisted Harman Baweja to find a way when in trouble. Drona has a blue flower petal!

Mind you these are just a few of the numerous senseless scenes that Goldie and his Drona team treat us with. Can be forgiven in the name of Fantasy, but then there is hardly a connection between any two scenes.

The characters are poorly written. Kay Kay's character is more clownish than devilish. The extent of his evil powers and its repercussions if he succeeds is not clear. Same goes with the main character of Drona. His strengths and power are not dealt with in detail which is so very important for a superhero flick.

For all Goldie Behl had to tell, he could have easily reduced the runtime to about 1 and a half hours instead of its actual 2 hours 15 mins runtime. Would have reduced the cost of making and the viewers pain. Though, thankfully it wasn't longer.

Coming to the songs, which have no significance in the movie, are unbearable. The only thing that stands out in Drona is the brilliant special effects, which are way ahead of Bollywood standards.

Performances are poor. Abhishek Bachchan is no Hrithik Roshan or Akshay Kumar, although he tries hard in the action sequences, his body language or physique just doesn't suit the role of a superhero with unprecedented physical power. His excess flab around the tummy area is quite clearly seen in the Drona costume. Priyanka Chopra is at her sexiest best! She oozes sensuality and performs the action scenes remarkably well.

Now the much hyped role of Kay Kay Menon, its such a dud. This has to be one of his worst roles ever. A great actor degraded by a stupid role. Jaya Bachchan has a very small role.

Overall, Drona could easily be placed a notch or two below some of the worst movies I have seen. Also, hardly have I witnessed an audience so restless during a movie. Goldie's childhood promise to Abhishek could turn out to be his worst nightmare ever! At the box-office, Kidnap as a rival will severely make a dent in Drona's collections. Weekend should be decent, but Monday onwards the fall could well be inevitable.

Positives : Special effects and Priyanka Chopra.
Negatives : Almost everything else. Poor direction, bad story, below average performances.. to name a few.

Strictly avoid!

Rating: Half star for Drona.😲

Other notes - Firstly, thanks for reading the Drona review. Drona quite often reminded me of Mani Shankar's painful Rudraksh in 2004 starring Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Suniel Shetty. Rudraksh was also a fantasy movie.

Moving on from the Drona nightmare, Kidnap directed by Sanjay Gadhvi releases tomorrow. Imraan Khan could prove to be lucky the second time too. Its a co-incidence that Love Story 2050 another Fantasy / Sci- Fi movie released against Imraan's Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. And the rest as we all know is history. Hopefully Kidnap which also has Sanjay Dutt and Minissha Lamba turns out to be a much better watch. The review will be up by around 3 PM Indian Standard Time. Be sure to check back in.

I watched it yesterday....
All I can say is it did kept us glued to the TV the whole time. My girls loved it....
It was little slow and could have been a way way better if the director was capable of handling this fantastic subject. But I guess Goldie shoul dhave given the reins of directing into someone elses hand.
Abhi did not have any thing to do than look gloom. There were hardly any dialogues for him.
The movie had background commentory more than the dialogues for its actors.
If properly made then it would have been mindblowing movie.
But it was entertaining adn I watched it all and did not stop it in the middle as I wanted to know what is going tohappen at the end.
So I guess its not that bad....
