Mumbai, Sep 27 (IANS) Singer Lata Mangeshkar, known as the Nightingale of Bollywood for having mesmerised millions with her melodious voice for over six decades, enters her 80th year Sunday - and like every year she plans to keep it austere sans fanfare.

Lata has never celebrated her birthday in public and follows the same annual routine. She begins the day by praying at the Mahalaxmi Temple situated right across her home in Prabhu Kunj here.

This time she may attend a function at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital that she built in Pune in memory of her father.

From her first super hit 'Aayega aanewaala' to 'Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya' and 'Noorie' to her recent bests like 'Yeh hum aa gaye hain kahaan' and 'Luka chuppi', Lata has managed to thrill music lovers of every generation with her soulful singing over her 66-year-long career and continues to do so.

From light classical music to film songs and from ghazals to bhajans and pop, she has sung a variety of numbers. Having worked with almost all top music composers and singers in the industry, Lata has sung more than 30,000 songs in over 20 Indian languages.

The singer featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world.

'That 60 years down the line and having rendered over 25,000 songs, she has been able to maintain the same position is why she is called the Bollywood living legend,' composer Anu Malik told IANS.

According to him, every song of hers is a musical gem as much for her singing quality as for its pure composition.

Born Sep 28, 1929, to a family of musicians settled in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Lata's life wasn't easy. After her father Dinanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor, died of heart ailment in 1942, his five children - Lata, Hridayanath, Asha, Usha, and Meena - and wife Shudhhamati had to struggle for survival.

Being the eldest of them, 13-year-old Lata had to see the family through the rough patch. And she did it single-handedly until her siblings grew up, each gifted with musical talent of varying degrees.

Till the time she voluntarily cut down her singing assignments in the late 1980s, Lata faced no competition from any of the female singers, barring her sister Asha Bhosle. Though Asha's career ran parallel with hers, it was on a different note and scale musically.

Lyricist-filmmaker Gulzar said Lata's greatness lay in her complete devotion to music.

'Singing for her is not merely a profession, it is akin to worship,' he said.

Alka Yagnik, who grew up listening to Lata songs and idolised her before she became a playback singer herself, referred to the queen of melody as 'a pure soul.'

Anuradha Paudwal said: 'Lata Mangeshkar is a perfect example of a playback singer who can modulate her voice according to various song situations and suit characters as per their age and social status.'

Late maestro Naushad had once told this correspondent that when on a rainy day in 1943, she had come to meet him at the now-defunct Kardar Studios in Mumbai, he was busy in his music room and told her to wait.

'When I called her over and told her to sing, she chose one of Noor Jehan's numbers. She sang it with such perfection that my heart went out to her because she was drenched completely as she had waited under the rain. You rarely see such dedication,' said the composer, for whom Lata sang many memorable songs later.

Lata pioneered many constructive changes in Bollywood, which proved to be beneficial for singers in the long run.

She was the one who introduced the royalty system for singers in the industry. She also insisted that the singer's name be published with the songs instead of actors.

Music director Shamir Tandon described Lata as 'a genuine human being'.

'The reason why she has ruled the industry and is still around is that she has always paid attention to the art of singing, always kept on upgrading herself, besides adopting herself to the changing times,' Tandon told IANS.

Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network

Tune into any music channel around the world that plays popular movie Hindi songs and one would find that during the day time at least more than ten times one would be mesmerized by the voice of this lady who has been into the business of singing for more than sixty two years. It is probably for this very reason that Royal Music Hall in London undertook a voice modulation analysis of the voice of Lata Mangeshkar and concluded that her voice has been the gift of God to this queen of melody. It is rather a different matter altogether today that with the proliferation of multiple radio channels airing more number of new songs than old ones, voice of Lata Mangeshkar is not that prominent today, and even on her birthday today the contribution to Indian music is not being given the due importance. She along with Mukesh had for the first time taken the Indian Hindi film music to off shores and had sown the seeds for opening up a new market for Indian music on the international arena.

Even after singing for such a long time, whenever a fresh female face has to be introduced Lata Mangeshkar is the first choice. Starting her career at the tender age of twelve and facing rejections in the earlier stages owing to the perception that her voice is shrill, she attained such exalted heights that there was no competition at all for her. Therefore, she stopped accepting awards, which paved the way for other singers to come up.

Her first recognition came in succession with AAG, AAH and MAHAL. Her voice was considered shrill during the formative years, as she was being judged against the voices of sonorous variety like those of Suraiyya, Geeta Dutt, and Shamshad Begum etc. However, her evolution reached its acme with BARSAAT KI RAAT where she was juxtaposed against Shamshad Begum in the famous quawali and she came out with flying colours.

It is always a very difficult choice to determine which could be the best song that Lata Mangeshkar sang as she has sung more than forty thousand songs as per the last count and she may have become choosy in singing Hindi film songs; she still continues to sing in Marathi and Konkani with aplomb. However, one song that would always find mention in any of the lists compiled would be, "Aie Mere watan ke logon ... from HAQEQAT which led even the Prime Minister of the country Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to shed copious tears.

There was some muted criticism in some quarters that while Lata Mangeshkar does not have a competition when it is to do with singing songs based on Indian ragas, she could not come out with flying colours. But Lata Mangeshkar being Lata Mangeshkar, she turned her critics wrong once again when she sang "Main Ek Disco Tu Ek Disco in KHUDDAR, which incidentally was one of the most popular songs. She also has very few songs in her oeuvre of the bazaar variety but whenever she sung them, it was a super hit be it in ADALAT of Nargis or that of NAMAK HALAAL picturised on Smita Patil.

She was the first star on whose name a perfume has been named, and she is the only second star who has been adorned with a Bharat Ratna Award. The Yashraj Banner has paid the greatest tribute to the nightingale of the country by picking up her voice as the signature tune of their banner. It is also symptomatic of the importance that the voice of this lady has for this banner, as where it not for this voice the musical razzmatazz that Yash Raj banner has been associated with may not have crystallized. There are no other banners in the country, which pays tribute to the voice of Lata Mangeshkar every time a film made by their banner is displayed. Voices like hers make debut once in a lifetime, but their outreach is extended beyond generations.

The Lata didi I Know
The linguist

Its not easy to converse with a legend in a language you are not comfortable in. And that was me valiantly trying to form sentences in hindi in my mind, without insulting the singing sensation. As I was struggling with the grammar, a tiny voice pipped, "Why don't you ask me the question in Bengali and I will reply in hindi."

That is Lata didi for you. Sensing my discomfort, the aging singer put me at ease and thereafter started a conversation where I asked her in Bengali and she replied in hindi. "I have a knack for languages and since I have sung so many Bengali songs, I can speak it fluently."

The designer

In her traditional white sari with a contrasting border sat the diminutive lady as I made myself comfortable. She may not be designer material, but I noticed that Lata Mangeshkar has her own signature style. A simple white sari, with a zari border and a contrasting coloured pallu and the two plaits with the sari covering her head is another distinctive style of Lata didi. And not to forget her jewellery. There is a square cut emerald on her little finger and her middle finger is always adorned with diamonds. "I design my own jewellery. I also have a signature line with a leading diamond brand. I believe diamonds are a girl's best friend and I always wear them."

The Foodie

As our conversation ebbed and flowed, Lata didi's secrets kept pouring out. "I love food and more than that I love cooking. My favourite pastime is to be in the kitchen and cook. I prefer non vegetarian food and you should taste my mutton and fish dishes. But the art of eating food is not with a fork and spoon, but with your hands. Come for dinner and I will feed you Bengali and Malwani food", invited the septuagenarian.

The nail polish fetish

"I love the colour pink. I think pink is a very feminine colour. And I always apply pink nail polish on my feet," and then Lata didi lifted her sari daintily up her ankles to reveal her feet coated with a pearly pink shade of polish.

The love factor

"I wish I had the time to fall in love. When our father died, the first thought was of survival. With so many siblings to look after, there was no time to think of romancing. And then when things stabilized, time just flew by," says the singer who has crooned love songs for some of the best heroines of Indian films.

The Asha Factor

"There was never any problem between me and Asha, be it personal or professional. The family was not in favour of Asha's marriage because she was too young. Asha married and had to live in the suburbs, travel by train for her recordings, look after her children, cook and clean the house. Which elder sister would be happy if her sister had to struggle to make ends meet," revealed Lata didi for the first time on the said issue.

The Secret behind her magical voice

"If I tell you, you will certainly not believe it... but it is because of chillies. I love chillies. Be it the simple green chilli or the pickled variety. Whenever I eat, my plate will always have some salt and one green chilli. Its not honey, as most would like to believe," smiled the dimpled singer.

I have shared many a chat, many a conversation with Lata Mangeshkar. And on her birthday today, me and my entire team would like to wish her happiness, always.
