i have been receiving many PMs asking doubts about certain fetures on IF......... so i thought i'll post this, which answers most of the FAQ. It was originally posted by sree- our admin n this can be found in the "Rules and Announcement" section...... however, i added a few more or changed the answers to reflect the recent ones.
Login and Registration Issues:
- Hi, I am new to India Forums. Do I need to register at all? If so Why?
It is not compulsory that you need to Register in IF. You can visit the Forum as a Guest too. However, Registration will give you access to additional features not available to guest users. Some topics like Updates and Announcements of New Features are usually Tagged under ?Members Only? category. So, you might miss out on these if you are NOT a Member. You will also be missing definable Avatar Images, Private Messaging etc. Come on friends, it ONLY takes a few minutes to register, so we recommend you to do so.
- I have Registered in IF. What will be my next step?
You now need to introduce yourself in the New Members Intro Section. After doing so, please feel free to enter the Section you like.
- I am registered, but cannot Login.
Please check whether you are entering the right Username and Password.
- I am not able to Login, it says Cookie Problem. What do I do?
In this case, you need to clear off all the Cookies in your system. Please follow this: Go to Tools, Select Internet Options, Click Delete Cookies, say Yes to Delete, Click on Clear History, Click on OK. Try logging in again into IF.
- I have lost my Password!!!! What now?
Don?t panic!!! While your password cannot be retrieved, it can be reset. To do this, you have to go to the Login Page, Click Forgotten Password. Please do enter your User Name and the E-mail ID you have given in your Profile. If you have NOT given the ID, please give the frequently used Email ID, then write the ID here. You will get a mail after the reset of your Password.
- I registered in the past, but cannot Login anymore!
The most likely reasons for this are: you entered an incorrect Username and Password.(If this is the case, Refer Point 5) or the Administrator might have deleted your account for some reason. Contact India Forums Site Admin to find out why you can?t Login.
- How do I change my User name, whom should I contact?
Please write a Private Message to the Administrator, for change of User name.
User Preferences and Settings:
- How do I change my Settings?
If you are a registered member, then your Settings will be stored in a Database. To alter them, click on Settings in the Homepage. Click on Edit Profile, change your Settings as per your wish.
- How do I show an Avatar below my Username?
You can choose an Image known as Avatar to be associated with your Username. This is generally unique or personal to each user. You need to click on Setting in the Homepage, click on Edit Profile. Here, you can change the Avatar as per your wish, bearing in mind the Size specified by the Forum board.
- How do I make an Avtaar?

Posting Issues:
- How do I post a Topic in a Forum?
Very Simple ? Once you Register and are Logged in, go to the Forum where you wish to post a Topic. Click the New Topic which is present in all Sections.
- How do I Edit or Delete a post?
Unless you are the Forum Admin, Section Mod or a Global Mod, you can ONLY edit or delete your own post. You can Edit a post by clicking on the Edit button for the relevant post. After edition, your username and the time of Edition will be shown after the post. Please note that a Normal User CANNOT delete a post once someone has replied.
- How do I add a Signature to my Post?
To add a Signature to your post, you first need to create one. Please refer Point 7 for changing Settings. Once the Signature is created, check the Always Attach my Signatures to posts.
- How do I add an Image or Banner to my Signature?
To add an Image or banner to your signature, you must first upload your banner or signature onto either Photobucket or imageshack.
Once you have the url Link of your image upload, you go to Settings, Edit Profile. In the box next to the ?Signature? Option, you use the following codes to upload your image or banner :-

- How do I create a Poll?
Easy ? Once you Register and are Logged in, go to the Forum where you wish to Create a Poll. Click New Poll which is present in all Sections.
- How do I upload Videos on the site?
To upload videos on the site, you can use any of the hosting sites like Savefile, megaupload, rapidshare etc. Log onto these sites, you will have the option of uploading videos onto these sites. Don?t worry, these are free sites and allow unlimited uploads.
Go to the webpage, where you will have the option of browse and upload. Use Browse option to search for the video recorded file on your hard disk and once located, selected the file and click upload. It would take a while depending upon the size of the file.
Once the file is uploaded, the site would give you the web address or the link to download the file.
Go to the relevant section, in the Reply Post box, give a brief description of the video and use the URL Link Button to paste the web address and post it.
- Is there any specific site that can be commonly used for uploading Videos or Pictures?
Commonly used sites are Megaupload, Rapidshare and Savefile.
- How do I download Videos?
Click on the link of the video file (or copy paste the url on your web address). You will be given the option to download the file. Click on Save to disk and specify the folder where you want to save the file.
- How does one post pictures on the site?
Go to the Reply Post Box. You will find an icon, looking like this:-
Click on that option, you will get a small box with an option to upload an image from your hard disk. Click on browse and locate the file to be uploaded. Once you click on the OK button, you will be prompted to wait till the image finishes uploading onto the server. Once done, the box would disappear and you can view the link to the picture in the reply box. Once you make the post, you would be able to view the Picture.
Alternatively, you can upload the picture to some image hosting site and post the url of the page on the forum. For that you need to use the button which looks like this -
Files below 150 KB size alone will be uploaded.

Topic Types:
- What are Smileys?
Smileys or Emoticons are small graphical images used to express some feeling using a short code, e.g. :) means happy, :( means Sad . The full list of Emoticons can be seen in the Posting form. Try not to Overuse smileys, as they can quickly render a post unreadable and a moderator may decide to edit or trash the post altogether.
- What are Announcements?
Announcements often contain important information and you should read them as soon as possible. Announcements appear at the top of every page in the forum to which they are posted. Global Announcements are seen at the top of every page across all forums.
- What are Sticky Topics?
Every Section has certain Topics which are made Sticky. Certain Topics like Galleries, Recent Update, Archive of Updates etc are the most-read topics in a Section. So, in order to have these topics always in the first page of the Section, it is made Sticky. A Sticky Topic will always remain as the first post in the Section, no matter how many new posts are added after that. A Topic can be made Sticky by the Section Moderator or Viewbie.
- What are Locked Topics?
This is a Topic which is closed by the Administrator, Global Moderator, Moderator or Viewbie for certain reasons. You cannot reply to the locked topics, one can only view the contents.
User Levels and Groups:
- What are the different Member Classifications in IF?
There are few Ladder Groups.
0-49 posts : Newbie.
50-199 posts : Groupie.
200-999 : Senior Members.
1000-2999 : Goldie.
3000-4999 : IF-Dazzler
5000 n above IF-Rockers
These Classifications are automatically changed when a User enters the next catergory in the hierarchy.
The Non ? Ladder Groups are:
Coolbie: These are the Members who regularly write Updates.
Viewbie: These are the Members who assist the Section Moderators, help in promoting healthy discussions, sense and prevent collisions. Viewbies are Moderators on probation.
Moderators: These Members have certain Sections allocated to them, they take care of the day to day activity of their Sections.
Global Moderators and Admins: These Members have rights to to moderate all sections. The Admins take care of the technical as well as back-end jobs, maintain a smooth functioning of the Forum.
- How do I become a Coolbie?
The member who writes regular Updates for a Section, over a period of time, will be promoted by the Section Mods and others in the Board to a Coolbie Status.
- How do I become a Viewbie?
The members who contribute more than a regular member in the upliftment of a particular Section, who have the ability of promoting healthy discussions, ability to prevent collisions and take care of the Section along with the Section Mod will be made a Viewbie. This promotion will be finalized by the Section Moderators as well as other Global Moderators along with the Admin Members. Viewbies are Moderators under training and once a viewbie performs well as a moderator is promoted as Moderator. They are the members who have limited Moderating rights, are considered as Future Moderators.
- Who are Moderators?
Moderators are members who take care of the day-to-day activity of the Sections. They have the power to edit and delete posts, lock and unlock posts, move posts, trash posts etc, in the sections where they are promoted to Moderator Status. Moderators prevent people going off-topic or posting profanity and abusing words on the forum. The Moderators are usually chosen by the Global Moderators and members in the Admin Group. The Moderator is otherwise chosen on the basis of Quality of work for the forum, Nature of Posts in the forum and NOT based on Number of Posts.
- How are Global Moderators selected?
A Moderator who is very active, contributes a lot in the upliftment of the Forum, shows great managerial attitudes, has a subtle but strong way of dealing with problem users are usually made Global Moderators. This promotion is done by other Global Moderators and Admin Members.
- Who are the Administrators?
Administrators are the people assigned the highest level of control over the forum. These people can control all facets of Board Operation which includes Setting Permissions, Banning Users permanently, Creating Usergroups etc. They also have full moderator capabilities in all the Sections.
Private Messaging:
- I need to know the features in Private Messaging.
Private Meessenger enables you to Send and Receive Private Messages between yourself and other Fourm Members, this will not be known to the other members or the forum.
Inbox: Here, you can view all your Incoming Private Messages from where you can view or delete the messages you have received. This works very much like your Mail ?Inbox?.
Outbox: Here, you can view the Outgoing Private Messages that you have sent to other members. These messages remain in your Outbox until the recipient deletes your messages.
Buddy List: This is like an Address Book. You can Add or Delete Forum Members to your Buddy List for quick Reference. You can Block those members you do not wish to receive Private Messages from.
- What is the limit on Private Messages?
A person can Have a Maximum of 2500 Private Messages in his Inbox at a time. If the Receiver?s Inbox is full, a member will not be able to send Messages to him. The Sender will get a message, The Receiver?s Inbox is Full.
- I cannot Send Private Messages!!
There are Two reasons for this; you have to be Logged in to send a Message or there might be a problem for which you need to contact your Section Mod or Administrator.

- What can we look for in India Forums?

- I am a new Member in IF. I am not able to read the Updates!!!
All New Members need to get themselves introduced in the New Members Intro Section. Only then, can you read the Updates.
- Why does it take a long time to load a page on IF?
Please check your internet connection to see if the speed is Ok. Sometimes, when the speed is poor, IF page takes longer to open. Sometimes, when all or most members are online at the same time, or if the server is under maintenance, the server gets slow.
- I have a great idea for the upliftment of IF. Where can I suggest it?
We have a section exclusively for Suggestions and Comments. You can put your suggestion there, or PM the idea to your Section Moderator or any Global Moderator who will inturn pass it on to the concerned person.
Actions on Inappropriate Content:
- How do I report inappropriate Forum Posts?
The easiest way of reporting a post is by clicking on the Report Option present in the particular Topic you want to Report. This Report Option can be used by all members in the forum. On clicking on the Report Option, you will get a Box wherein you have Report the Problem with the Post you are mentioning. This Issues on Posts can be viewed by the Section Moderators , Global Moderators and Admins who, will see this when they get online.
- What are the possible reasons for a post being trashed?
Any kind of Advertisements, any kind of Profanity used in the posts, Uncontrollable Arguments with no end seen, Personal Attacks on members, Topics which go Off-topic, Mere Chat Topics are some kinds of posts which need to be trashed.
- How do I handle a member who is abusing me in Private Messages or in the Forum?
If the attack on you goes beyond a limit, Please report this matter to your Section Moderator or any other Global Moderator who is Online at that moment.
BAN:
- What are the possible reasons for a member to be Banned from IF?
The Member found to be instigative, provocative for a wrong cause, writing profanity, abusing and hurting members? sentiments, dealing in personal attacks, eventually leading to spoiling the decorum of the Forum, are usuall Warned thrice. If the member does not listen to these Warnings, the Development Team indulges in Banning the person from IF.
- How many Warnings will I get before I am Banned from the Site?
The Moderators will give a member atleast 3 Warnings before he/she is Banned from the Site.
- Can a Ban be changed, Can a member be back?
There are 2 types of Ban, one is a Temporary Ban, where a Member can come back to the Forum, if he/she accepts the mistake, promises to behave better. The other type of Ban is a Permanent Ban where the Administrators Ban the member completely. In this case, the decision can be revoked.
In the case of a Temporary Ban, it is for the Section Moderator or Global Moderator or The Administrator to revoke the imposed Ban on a member after close monitoring.

- What is new about the IF-Radio Feature. Explain.
IF Radio is our own Online Internet Radio Station, which is run in conjunction with Craze FM. You can listen to Radio, while you surf the forum, you can request songs, you can dedicate songs and you can also pass on messages to your friends on the Internet.
- What are the Warning Levels? How does it work?
Warning Levels indicate the number of Warnings a members has got. A person can get a Maximum of 5 Warnings. For every Warning, the percentage level in the Warning Feature, which appears for every user, will get increased by 20%. Warnings can be given by the Section Moderators, Global Moderators or Admins. When a person gets 5 Warnings, his percentage reaches a maximum of 100, which will eventually lead to the BAN of the member from IF.
- My Warning Level is up above 0. Is there a way in which it can be brought down?
Yes. By adhereing to the code of conduct of the forum.
Usually, the reason for your warning level being above 0% is because you have broken some rule or not conducted yourself in a manner befitting the forum. At the time when your warning levels were increased, you must have been given the reason for the same. Once you demonstrate that you have rectified your mistake and you would follow the norms of the forum, your levels would be brought down.
- I want to send a E-card. Is there a feature for this in IF?
On the home page, on the right hand corner on top, you find a link ?Free Egreeting?.
- How are IF Interviews held? What is the work involved in every Interview?
IF has a Radio Partner in CrazeFM, these Interviews are done in conjunction with CrazeFM. The Development Team of IF, with the help of certain sources try their level best to get in touch with the Stars. After the initial talk and the Stars? acceptance for the Interview for IF, the Admin members make a nice Banner for the Star. The details about the Star are dugged out by a group of Moderators and Viewbies. This Banner is put up in the Homepage, indicating the Interview Date and Time. A Global Announcement is put up, requesting the members of IF to post their questions to the Stars. After the fixed time for posting questions is over, the Development Team appoints a group of Global Moderators and Moderators (this changes for every Interview)to compile these questions, make it look more presentable. This list of Compiled Questions will be passed on to the Star for their final approval. On getting the Approval of the Star, these Questions are passed on to Mr. Wakas Mir , who will be the person spearheading the Interview. The Interview is usually conducted thro? the phone.
