But he'll be back soon, this time in promos of his film. BT caught up with the actor, who's all set for his big transition....
Nervous about your Bollywood debut with Meerabai Not Out?
Yep. It's finally happening. And I am as nervous as any debutant should be. I feel like I'm entering space... the final frontier.
You consciously kept a low-profile recently...
Arre yaar, yeh low profile kya hota hai? I wasn't underground. Bas kuch kaam karne ki koshish kar raha tha.
Television to Bollywood... how difficult was the journey?
I don't think I had it difficult. Pritish Nandy dropped it in my lap. The journey is going to be difficult now. I've realised it's not only important how good an actor you are, you should also be smart enough to direct your career rightly. I learn fast.
Not many from TV have made it in films...
Times are a changing. If you observe my lot, some have been accepted. Rajeev (Khandelwal) and Shabbir (Ahluwalia) are shining examples. I keep hearing a lot of other actors are also being approached. The more the merrier.
What's your role in the film all about?
I play Dr Arjun Awasthi who is not connected with cricket or Meera's world. But they meet and his life goes for a six. She already has someone in her life. And then... please watch the film. Hey, my character is very close to what I am in real life. Quite simple and straight forward.
Are you a cricket buff?
No. I was always more inclined towards soccer and hockey. I think I lost interest because my brothers didn't ever let me bat. It was always fielding for me.
You are known to be a good dancer. Have you got the chance to show your dancing skills in the film?
I think only in the promotional videos. Ek doctor kitna dance karega?
You've always spoken your mind. Is Bollywood making you more diplomatic?
I must confess, I try to stay away from anyone who doesn't want to hear my point of view so as not to rub them the wrong way. And damn, even trying to be diplomatic is so tiring!
