Day 1: Stumps - England Women trail by 264 runs

It has been an absorbing opening day of cricketing action in the first-ever historic Women's Test at Lord's. Sciver-Brunt put India into bat after winning the toss but the English seamers were largely insipid with the new ball. Filer and Bell produced a couple of really good deliveries though to get rid of Shafali and Yastika cheaply. Mandhana was her usual free-flowing self and scored boundaries with consummate ease. Jemimah also looked good and stitched a 50-run stand with Mandhana but threw away a start. Harmanpreet played the perfect foil to Mandhana and the duo stitched a 89-run stand to put India in a strong position. But, Wong got rid of Smriti and her dismissal triggered a collapse. India slipped from 190/3 to get bowled out for 285. The older ball turned quite a lot - Ecclestone and the debutant, Mady Villiers, shared five wickets between them to derail the Indian innings.

England had to face a tricky 40 minutes or so at the close of the day. Gaud and Satghare bowled in probing channels and kept the English batters on their toes. They hardly gave anything way and made life difficult for the hosts. Gaud struck with a superb inseaming delivery to trap Beaumont in front. India had a great opportunity to send Knight packing cheaply as Gaud trapped her infront but they missed a trick by opting against a review. Some deliveries also kept low especially while England were batting which suggests that this pitch might rather deteriorate quickly. The match is nicely poised at present.
