Brainrot is aninternet slang for the perceived mental decline from consuming excessive, low-quality digital content.

It’s just bizarre.

I feel sorry for the kids and teens today more than anything. I grew up watching all sorts of shows meant for kids - be it Indian shows like Dada Dadi ki Kahaaniya, Vikram Betaal or English shows like Small Wonder, I dreamed of Jeannie, Bewitched that we initially got in dubbed versions and later in English as well, not to mention a whole channel dedicated to kids in Cartoon Network. We would also watch Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shri Krishna, Om Namah Shivaya among others.

Occasionally there would be movies made for kids too or movies which kids could easily enjoy watching with their parents in a theatre. Neither tickets were crazy expensive nor the snacks and there was no overt vulgarity in the content. The clothes, dances, songs were decent too and a movie outing would be a treat that would incite excitement.

When I turned a teen, there were shows that catered to teens - Kyun Hota Hai Pyarr, Hip Hip Hurray, the whole array of Star One shows. Movies like Ishq Vishq etc also released coincidentally back then.

On the musical front we had music channels that we would enjoy tuning into because they didn’t just play songs but VJs like Nikhil, Cyrus, Shehnaz etc made it fun. Not to mention we were spoiled for choices by homegrown talent like Sonu Nigam, Falguni Pathak, Euphoria, Alisha Chinai, Ila Arun etc. and on the international front we got Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin etc.

I know there’s so much more in terms of content now than we had back then thanks to YouTube, OTT platforms and 100s of channels but I feel we gained quantity but back then there was quality.

Teens and kids nowadays might have tablets, smartphones etc. but the content is absolutely trash. They might enjoy a better visual experience than we did but we got to enjoy the better content in comparison.

true

I think till 2016 the content was good in itv.

Gen z had Disney Channel and a lot of other good shows but makers stopped catering to teenagers and kids

Good content was long gone, but we had tolerable content. Now even that seems to be on the verge of disappearing since everyone is just doing the same thing. Shows look same, the stories are same, the way they dress their characters is the same. Everyone goes for leaps and decides to separate the leads before they do so if their show lasts long enough to get there but also ensure that the leads have a child together that the dad is absolutely clueless about for years and has to accidentally stumble upon one day and randomly feel drawn to and love only to discover, oh, this strange kid I inexplicably fell in love with is my own.

Literally there’s nothing new.

Previously you had a variety of shows on TV, shows for adults and shows for kids as well as the occasional show for teens. Family shows were made and even there if you had a drama it didn’t necessarily showcase stuff that you didn’t want to expose your kids too like EMAs or assault scenes. After all, no parent wanted to explain to their 6 year old what happened on TV. Most importantly, shows were weekly or biweekly at most. That kept the content fresh and interesting. It also allowed for a wider variety of shows.

You could have a Tara, Hasratein, Filmy Show etc. all airing on the same channel - Zee TV. Saturdays usually were reserved for game shows like Antakshari or the likes. Sundays most channels simply aired some movie or aired some event like an award show, some musical event held in the memory of some deceased legend etc.

The decrease in quality and sameness is not owing to the lethargy of the people involved in making shows, rather it’s due to the fatigue set in when they literally can’t catch a break as an episode has to be aired daily without fail 24/7/365. Their brains have to give up after a point because there’s only so much they can do as well. With the audience also rejecting innovative ideas like Everest, 24, Powder, Mukti Bandhan there’s no incentive either given that channels would be apprehensive to even touch their ideas with a 10 foot long pole let alone invest in them.

God knows when and how will this change, if ever.

SP wants to get its money’s worth from whatever software they’ve acquired the subscription for these AI generated gems smiley36

Mahabharata obviously didn’t generate the profits they wished, now they’re using it in Kyunki to generate Krishna, a taxi on the Bandra - Worli Seal Link; Shahi obviously didn’t want to be left behind and so got this done for his show instead. Saste mein nipta diya inke foreign ke sapno ko smiley36

It was a dream sequence but still cheap.

I remember, Diya aur Baati Hum spending 6 hours on recording promos alone. Lol
