Brainrot is aninternet slang for the perceived mental decline from consuming excessive, low-quality digital content.
It’s just bizarre.
I feel sorry for the kids and teens today more than anything. I grew up watching all sorts of shows meant for kids - be it Indian shows like Dada Dadi ki Kahaaniya, Vikram Betaal or English shows like Small Wonder, I dreamed of Jeannie, Bewitched that we initially got in dubbed versions and later in English as well, not to mention a whole channel dedicated to kids in Cartoon Network. We would also watch Ramayana, Mahabharata, Shri Krishna, Om Namah Shivaya among others.
Occasionally there would be movies made for kids too or movies which kids could easily enjoy watching with their parents in a theatre. Neither tickets were crazy expensive nor the snacks and there was no overt vulgarity in the content. The clothes, dances, songs were decent too and a movie outing would be a treat that would incite excitement.
When I turned a teen, there were shows that catered to teens - Kyun Hota Hai Pyarr, Hip Hip Hurray, the whole array of Star One shows. Movies like Ishq Vishq etc also released coincidentally back then.
On the musical front we had music channels that we would enjoy tuning into because they didn’t just play songs but VJs like Nikhil, Cyrus, Shehnaz etc made it fun. Not to mention we were spoiled for choices by homegrown talent like Sonu Nigam, Falguni Pathak, Euphoria, Alisha Chinai, Ila Arun etc. and on the international front we got Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin etc.
I know there’s so much more in terms of content now than we had back then thanks to YouTube, OTT platforms and 100s of channels but I feel we gained quantity but back then there was quality.
Teens and kids nowadays might have tablets, smartphones etc. but the content is absolutely trash. They might enjoy a better visual experience than we did but we got to enjoy the better content in comparison.
