Legacy and Longing: Inspiring Leaders/Heroes You Want to See Back in Action!

Admiration is defined as the expression of respect, esteem, and awe directed toward someone. It frequently emphasises the qualities of that exceptionally talented individual who motivated us and others to work for the betterment of a community/country/department.

Many creative people in the past have motivated a generation to strive for greater goals for the benefit of all humanity through their contributions to their country, the world, and that specific department or faculty.

A multitude of historical figures, philosophers, freedom fighters, scientists, musicians, and well-known movie stars and artists have inspired us in many ways and made important contributions to the world with their knowledge and inventiveness.

If you had the rare opportunity to bring one famous personality back to life, which well-known figure would you pick and why?

Anyone from the past who is well-known to people other than your friends and family.

Or with a witty answer, for comic relief in these difficult times to pass, or a longing for an actress or actor to see back in action.... simply share your thoughts and hopes here.

Recently, I attended the closing day of a fantastic exhibition on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, whose teachings and life informed, enriched, and inspired me in many ways.

As a brilliant activist who shaped our world by advocating for massive social change and fairness long before Lenin created his Bolshevik faction and Mao Zedong embraced revolutionary principles.

Gandhi formulated beliefs and implemented a campaign of nonviolent opposition to injustice.

War and conflict is pushing a record number of people to flee their homes across the world, with over 65 million now displaced. Armed groups recruit and utilise children as frontline fighters. Women face assault and humiliation. Humanitarian and medical professionals who offer aid and care for those in need are frequently targeted.

The brotherhood of all religions and Satyagraha's emergence altered people's perceptions of freedom of opinion and expression in everyday life!

Gandhi was a deeply spiritual person who believed religion was a private matter and that each person made their own approach to God. Any attempt to create a religious state unacceptable, as was any other way of differentiation between people.

If we bring him back from the past, will he be able to survive now??

I don't think I would like anyone to be brought back to life. I deeply believe that every great person is a product of his/her own conditions and society and individual experiences at the same time. They are marked by the situations of the particular time he/she is brought up in.

Second thing is that a flower's beauty lies in the fact that it spreads fragrance for some time and then wilts away. The transitory life is what gives meaning to a life, imho.

Third is the fact that many great personalities are flawed and humane. They had to suffer the mindset of their particular time. Only after they are dead, do they get the most recognition. Living people are not as loved and respected as the dead ones. So, there's a chance that we overestimate someone. (One section of people)

Fourth, the times we live in, most people simply live to hate on others. They aren't very keen on what they like to do but on what they don't like in others. They don't even leave the dead ones nowadays. You can see people literally hating on the long dead personalities. (Another section of people)

Lastly, if they are brought back to life, the circumstances would've changed for them. They won't be the same personalities that they were in their time.

Well said. smiley32What an insightful response to the shift in circumstances. I fully agree with your views on all points that you mentioned above. smiley10

The implementation of Mahatma Gandhi's ideas and philosophy to contemporary India is a complicated and contentious issue. While many people appreciate his advocacy for nonviolence, social justice, and self-reliance, others doubt his relevance in the light of contemporary concerns such as economic disparity and political conflict.

Society is divided by caste and religion, and politicians prioritise power and corruption over doing good for the people.

And you are absolutely right. New situations bring new problems and new problems demand new approaches.

Totally agree with you - that line about “new problems demand new approaches” really hits home. While I do admire many past leaders and artists, I often wonder whether their ideals would hold up (or even survive) in today’s chaotic, hyperconnected world. Some would probably be heartbroken by the toxicity we see online alone. I guess legacies are best preserved in lessons, not literal returns. And like you said - sometimes the beauty is in their time-bound essence. Thanks for sharing such a grounded perspective - it really makes you pause and reflect.

If given the chance, I would not bring any historical figure back to life, because their contributions belong to their own time and context. Great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., or Einstein shaped the world in powerful ways, but their legacies live on through their ideas, actions, and teachings. Bringing them back might not align with today’s world, which faces new challenges. Instead, we should honor their memory by learning from the past and creating a better future ourselves.
