Lies are always evident even when they are clad in the golden hues of trust, they never go unnoticed. Similar were the surrenders of Kairi. She knew everything was just a lie, yet she chose to believe it, to bury it with utmost faith. That's how entangled she was.
Clad in a navy blue Banarasi silk saree, her movements came with an eased expertise. Her hands moved back and forth on the kitchen slab to prepare a perfect, round Roti.
Her bangles were jingling, creating an ecstatic aura of traditional hues. Her dark brown orbs fluttered every time she tried to sneak a peek on the curry being cooked at low flame. But something about her was impatient. Some resolutions were breaking thin within her. And she was holding back just a little from quitting.
The only thing that was adorning her petite look the most was the 'vermilion' that had taken its place between her hair partition as if it was meant to be there. Her lips kept curving with an uncanny smile, that didn't hold any trace of happiness. She was humming a song with practiced ease:-
Hmm.. hmm..
La ra la hey hey hey
Hmm.. You're mine
Hmm hmm hmm.. la la la he he he
say you're mine...
"I'm yours!" came a manly voice which exuded utter masculinity.
Kairi tilted her head to find the source of this sound. She saw Yug standing across the door and was leaning onto the doorframe with a smile plastered on his face. Kairi's brows scrunched at the sight and sound, especially that smile which once used to be a rare occurrence.
"Huh?" came her voice ringing the atmosphere with a new found melody.
"Nothing. By the way, happy one week anniversary" said Yug closing the distance between them.
"Hmm" said Kairi retreating backwards and returning her attention to her Roti and curry.
"Kya baat hai? kuch udas lag rahi ho" Yug's voice was calm as he grabbed a glass and filled it with water.
But Kairi didn't reply. Yug stole glances of her while drinking water, and started walking near her. On reaching just some inches away from her he spoke up again.
"Kairi?"
"Hmmm?"
"Kya hua hai tumhe? dekh raha hun ab gumsum si rehne lagi ho. Mujhse... Maine kuch kiya hai kya? itni jaldi uth jaati ho. raat ko thik se soti nhi ho. jaanta hun ki yeh shaadi tumhari marzi nhi thi lekin kya kar sakte hain ab hum?" Yug's voice was gentler than the requirement. It was as if he knew she was fragile right now.
"Aur aapka kya? aapki marzi se hui yeh shaadi?" She spoke in a low yet demanding voice.
"Kya farq padta hai? Ab tum meri biwi ho aur yehi sachai hai." He said staring deep into her dark brown orbs.
"Pehle hi aap par kitne zimmedariyan hain aur maine aur bhi mushkil kar diya aapke liye. yeh sab meri galti hai." a fresh tear rolled down her cheek.
"Tum galat nhi ho. galat toh tumhare saath hua hai. Ab rona band karo. Aur meri taraf dekho"
Yug held Kairi by her shoulders and brought her a little closer. Her face was now cupped in his hand while he handled her with gentleness.
"Court mein jo hua woh galat tha, ek akeli aurat rakh sakti hai apne bhai behnon ka khayal magar ek mard ka saaya zaroori hota hai, baat alag hoti agar tumhara bhai ek adult hota aur naukri bhi kar rha hota. ye ek stereotype hai lekin... tumhara safe hona bhi zaroori hai aur isiliye maine tumhara haath thama aur isme tum kahin se galat nhi ho samjhi? tumhein tumhare bhai behen ki custody mil gayi aur kya chahiye? ab yeh sab sochna band karo aur apne padhayi pe dhyan do."
It was no less than a miracle, Yug Sinha was consoling a woman, not just any woman but his wife. Yug could feel Kairi was relaxing after hearing his words so he thought to leave. He turned on his heels and started walking out of the kitchen when he heard Kairi was saying something.
"Aap achanak itne badal kyun gaye hain? ek hafte se aap bohut badle hue lag rahe hain. yun mujhe samjhana, mujhe hosla dena aur sabse badi baat aap raat ko mujhe pakad ke kyun sote hain?" confusion was dripping from her voice.
Yug froze mid track on listening to this, sweat beads were forming on his forehead. But he was thankful that his back was facing Kairi. He controlled his panic and spoke:-
"Meri Biwi ho tum. main pakad kar soun ya phenk dun palank se, tumhe kya?"
"what?"
"What kya what.. idhar udhar ki baaton se hat kar apne roti aur sabzi pe dhyan do jal rahe hain."
"kyaa? hey mata rani" she turned to see that the gas was already turned off. When she looked back towards the door, Yug was not there.
"kamaal karti hai tu Kairi! Yug Sinha aur badlav... Impossible.. yeh paida hi hue hain tera dimaag khaane ke liye" Kairi greeted her teeth with frustration.
Meanwhile Yug walked away with a smirk on his face.
"yeh badlaav isliye kyun ki main tumhe ek aur Yug Sinha nhi banana chahta. Main tumhein woh pyaar dena chahta hun jo mujhe kabhi mila hi nhi Kairi aur badle mein main tumse kuch bhi nhi chahta. Kyun ki Aurat expectations ke laayak hi nhi hai"
Kairi had returned to her chores. A gentle and genuine smile was adorning her face. And she seemed relaxed, still humming the song,unknown that she was filling the voids of the 'Man of the house'.
