Muharram is called the Month of Allah which marks the beginning of the new Islamic Year. The special month is considered as sacred and full of blessings.
« The most virtous of the sacred months is the Month of Allah, Muharram » (Hasan al-Basri).
The Muslims are invited to begin the new year on a good note. It gives a chance to reflect and ponder over the countless blessings given by Allah and think about the hereafter.
Muslims take this opportunity to make amends and firm resolutions, reaching their best version of themselves.
The virtue and honour of this month can be attested by the fact that it is the only month attributed to the name of Allah. Ibn Rajab said « Such an attribution is only made by Allah to the elite of His creation, such as the attribution of the House (Ka’aba) and the Camel to Himself »
Muharram is the best month to fast after Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), said « The best fasting after Ramadan is the sacred month of Allah » (Muslim 1163). Thus, the reward of fasting is given by Allah.
A hadith (words said by the Prophet pbuh) reveals that « Fasting on the day of Ashura expiate the minor sins of the previous year »
Muharram holds a special treasure which is the day of Ashura. A series of numerous events happened on that day and commemorations differ from communities.
Noah’s (Prophet Nuh) ark safely came to rest as he was being followed by enemies.
Jonah (Prophet Yunus) was released from the belly of the whale, after imploring God to forgive him.
Job (Prophet Ayyub) was being tested by a long illness. During those long years,he lost everything and God accepted his resilience and patience by curing him.
It is believed that Adam’s repentence was also accepted on that day.
The Prophet Moses was saved from Phara’oh on this day and he fasted out of gratitude. The enemies were following the prophet and his people and reached the sea. God, by His mercy, opened the sea so that they could escape.
Muslim spend the days during this sacred month and Ashura by fasting, performing prayers, reading the Quran, meditating and giving charity.
The Shia community, on the other hand, commemorates the martyrdom of Al Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the city of Karbala. The community spend days of mourning the tragedy. Street processions are held heading to the holy shrine. Prayers are recited along with people displaying public expressions of grief.
May Allah bless all Muslims across the globe and forgive our sins. Ameen
