With Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the Champions Trophy still uncertain, there's a big suspense over who India's vice-captain will be. Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant all are in the fray, though reports suggested that Bumrah is the selection committee's first choice. Virat Kohli could also be a temporary option for the role if Bumrah remains unavailable.

After an underwhelming show in Tests, it's time to shift focus to white-ball cricket as Team India gears for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which starts next month. The ICC has directed all participating teams to submit their provisional 15-member squad by January 12 and BCCI is expected to do the same by the end of this week. The BCCI selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar will soon announce squad for the white-ball series against England and Champions Trophy. A lot of tough calls are expected, especially after the underwhelming show since Gautam Gambhir has taken over as the head coach.

Several members of the Indian team that had finished runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy have either retired (MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan) or aren’t in the selectors’ radar at the moment (Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav).

Skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who had led the team back then, will be hoping to play a central role in helping the team win the tournament for the second time in three editions. All-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja too are expected to make the cut.

However, the participation of pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will depend on their fitness.
