Ruhi couldn’t fathom why she was pouring her heart out to a stranger, but once she started, she couldn’t stop. Words tumbled out of her, carrying with them memories, smiles, and tears she hadn’t realized she was holding back. Everything spilled from her heart faster than she could process, a flood she was powerless to contain.
Unaware of the emotions raging within Abhir as he listened, Ruhi continued to weep for her parents, whom she had lost because of her maasi. Just as she was about to say more, ready to unburden the weight of it all, a soft buzz from her phone interrupted her.
Wiping her tears away, Ruhi answered the call, "Ruhi, sweetheart where are you? I just came back home and got to know what happened, are you okay?" Rohit's concerned voice filled her ears causing her heart to skip a beat.
He cares for me.
A sweet smile curved upon her lips, finding comfort in her loving husband's concern for her. She mentally berated herself for hurting him the way she did, "I am fine Rohit. I just needed some fresh air."
Rohit could tell from her voice that she had been crying. His heart ached with guilt of being the reason behind his wife's pain, "Just tell me where you are, I'll come to pick you up." he responded softly, already picking up his car keys.
"You don't have to Rohit, I drove myself so I -" she was interrupted by Rohit who said, "I'll tell the driver to get the car. I am coming to pick you up, wifey, and that's final! Message me the address, okay."
Ruhi chuckled, feeling light hearted and agreed, "I love you." she whispered softly.
"Love you, too." responded Rohit before ending the call.
The smile on Ruhi's face faltered a little when she noticed that Abhir was still seated beside her. The red tint of embarrassment colored her cheeks, making her feel shy, "I am sorry, that was -"
Abhir tried to smile and shook his head. He, unintentionally, ended up listening to the couple's private conversation and was embarrassed himself. But he was glad that his Ruhi Chuhi got married to nice guy.
As she sent Rohit the details of her location, Abhir decided to stay with Ruhi until her husband comes to pick her up. He wanted to meet the man his sister got married to and tried to focus on the present instead of thinking about the revelations of the past that Ruhi had just disclosed to him.
"I am sorry." Ruhi muttered disrupting the silence that they had enveloped them after the phone call.
"What for?" though Abhir was trying his best, he could not keep his voice from cracking. He fake coughed to cover it up.
"For, you know, I was upset and -" Abhir gathered that she was hesitating, clearly embarrassed about how much she had shared.
"Don't be embarrassed." he chuckled and had to fight the urge to ruffle her hair, "I asked you to share, didn't I?"
"So, do you also think that I am being over-dramatic by still going on and on about what happened in the past?" questioned Ruhi, prepared to hear Abhir say the same thing that the others have been telling her all this while.
If Abhir hadn’t known the truth he knew now, if he had been the same Abhir he was years ago, he would have agreed with the others that Ruhi was being over-dramatic. But now, he knew better.
"No." he said firmly, "You aren't being over-dramatic."
Ruhi's felt her heart flutter hearing that. She hadn't expected a stranger to believe her, to take her side when her own family was against her, "Really?" she asked, her voice trembling with cautious hope, "You don't think that I am just clinging to something that's better left forgotten?"
Abhir's gaze softened as he looked at his sister, his chest tightening with emotions he couldn't express, "I believe so." he smiled, "I know that I barely know you but I know how hard it can be to lose a parent and you lost not one but three of them because of -" he could not complete the sentence, the thought that his mother was responsible for this caused his throat to tighten.
"Yeah." Ruhi nodded, smiling softly, "Thank you."
Silence fell between them, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. For Ruhi, it was the kind of silence that felt like a warm blanket, wrapping her in a sense of security she hadn’t felt in years.
Abhir, on the other hand, felt a pang of guilt as he watched her relax. He wished he could tell her everything, tell her that he wasn’t just someone who understood her pain, but someone who had lived through a part of it with her. That he was her brother. Her Billa Boy.
But he knew this wasn’t the right time. For now, he would settle for being the stranger who listened, the one person who could give her the support she so desperately needed.
And maybe, just maybe, he could begin to make up for the years they had lost.
But for now, he broke the silence. "Give me your phone," he said, startling Ruhi.
"What?"
"Tch." he simply snatched Ruhi's cell phone from her hand and shoves the phone in and close to her face causing it to unlock.
"What the, what?!" Ruhi fumbled and tried to take her cell phone back but Abhir held it out of her reach, a mischievous smirk tugging at his lips, "Relax," he said casually scrolling through her phone, "I am not going to steal anything or post anything embarrassing. Just trust me for a second."
“Trust you? You literally snatched my phone!” Ruhi exclaimed, her voice a mix of annoyance and disbelief. “Who even does that?” she tried to snatch her phone back but unlike what she had just said, she kind of trusted him to not do anything wrong using her phone.
Abhir ignored her protests, his fingers moving swiftly over the screen, “You are too worked up, there's so much of bad energy around you. You need a break.” he said matter-of-factly.
Ruhi narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms as she glared at him, “What are you even doing? If you delete my messages or mess with my photos, I swear -”
“Relax!” Abhir interrupted with a chuckle, holding the phone just out of her reach as she made another grab for it, “I am not snooping around for some scandalous okay, I have no interest in your private stuff."
Ruhi’s face flushed and Abhir made a gagging sound, "You are my sister, I don't want to know about that stuff, so sshh."
Ruhi's eyes widened and Abhir stilled, "Like, I meant that you are like my sister." he hurriedly corrected and focused back on her cell phone.
“Got it!” he said suddenly, bringing Ruhi out of her thoughts and handed the phone back to her, looking quite satisfied with himself.
Ruhi snatched it from his hand, glaring at him as she checked to see what he had done. Her eyes widened when she saw the screen, “Did you just install a meditation app on my phone?”
"I also saved my number in your contacts so you can call me anytime, whenever you feel like talking about anything." Abhir smiled but became cautious when he noticed the tears brimming in Ruhi's eyes.
"What? Why are you? I promise I did not do anything wrong! I only installed the meditation app because I feel meditation will help you relax and you know, the positive vibes thingy. It will help you de-stress." Abhir raised up his hands as if in surrender and continued, "And I only gave you my number as a friend. Didn't I just say that you are like my sister and I feel like I should help you and I thought that what's better way to help you out than to listen to your issues and -" he was blabbing, the more upset Ruhi looked, the more his blabbing continued.
"I am sorry." he said finally not having anything else to say and the surrender made Ruhi chuckle through tears.
"Thank you." she said wiping away her tears, "It feels good to have someone who can understand what I feel without judging me. I promise, I will try this meditation app but I am going to delete it if I don't like it."
"That's fine." smiled Abhir, feeling relaxed.
"Also, considering how my life is, are you up for listening to my long rants and whining?" she actually wanted that. She had always wished for someone in her life with whom she could share everything, someone who wouldn't judge her or give her some advice or suggest an alternative. She didn't need help, she needed support.
"Ruhi, it's fine. I know that we barely know each other but isn't this how friendships start? And you are totally like my sister, so that's a good thing, right?" Abhir hoped that it was enough to convince her for the time being.
He was already planning on telling her about him being her Billa Boy but until he could be with her as a brother, he wanted to be there for her as her friend.
Ruhi smiled in response and nodded her head positively, "Wait! I didn't tell you my name." she frowned.
"Uhhh, I heard your and your husband's conversation, remember? I heard him calling you with that name so it's obviously you, right. Hahaha." he turned his face away, avoiding Ruhi's suspicious gaze, "Haha." his fake laughter had a hint of fear.
"Hhmm." Ruhi simply hummed in response but before she could say anything further, they were interrupted by Rohit's voice, "Ruhi!"
Abhir and Ruhi glanced in the direction of the voice and spotted Rohit walking towards them. The moment he was close enough, Rohit pulled Ruhi in his embrace and let out a sigh of relief, "Are you alright? I am so sorry, I wasn't there and -"
Ruhi wrapped her arms around Rohit feeling grateful to have him as her husband. She was glad that she stopped chasing after Armaan in time, otherwise she would have lost such a sweet, loving and caring husband like Rohit, "I am fine."
Abhir felt awkward around the couple but he was glad that his Ruhi Chuhi has a good husband. His naughty chuhiya finally found her sweet chuha - the thought made him snort with laughter, snapping the couple back to reality.
"Who -" Rohit looked at Ruhi with questioning eyes. He was only curious, not suspicious, "Aren't you Rudra, the singer from that famous band?"
"You know me!" Abhir exclaimed, happy.
"You know him?" asked Ruhi at the same time.
Rohit looked at the two of them before saying, "Yeah. My siblings are a huge fan of yours." he smiled, "Your music is really good."
Abhir smiled before looking up at Ruhi with a teasing glance, "See, not everybody lives under a rock like you."
"Haha, very funny!" Ruhi rolled her eyes good naturedly.
"You two know each other?" Rohit asked.
"He's a friend of mine." responded Ruhi before Abhir could say anything, "Like a brother. A friend who is like a brother." she added.
