A fervent campaign is under way in the city to ensure Mumbai boy Abhijeet Sawant is crowned the first Indian Idol.

Sawant made it to the final two of the contest last Thursday, and is vying with Amit Sana from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, for the title.

Tomorrow, the two talented boys will have their last chance to woo the public before voting closes on March 3. Here's your chance to ensure the best man wins.

To vote for Abhijeet, send

ABHIJEET as an SMS to 2525 or call 19024242525-0 today.

For Sawant's army of fans, the battle has begun. Incessant phone calls and SMSes, mountains of pamphlets, and cheering mobs at the venue of the contest are all part of the city's massive push for Sawant's Idol glory.

Yesterday, a huge crowd turned up at the Famous Studios, Mahalaxmi, the venue of the finals, to root for the Mumbai boy. Those who couldn't get in waited patiently for an hour before leaving.

But it isn't only the studio that's witnessing crowds. There are throngs also at Abhijeet's home in Shahunagar, Mahim, and their support is getting to be so fervent that Abhijeet's riyaaz is in some danger of disruption.

According to his cousin Sushil Chaukekar, "We have had people waiting till 3 am below our building just to get a glimpse of Abhijeet or to talk to him. We told him to switch off his cell phone as he was inundated with calls from well-wishers and this was disturbing his riyaaz."

A significant section of the city's civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, has also joined the unofficial campaign team. The Municipal Mazdoor Union, one of the BMC's biggest unions, has asked its one-lakh-strong workforce to vote for Abhijeet, whose father is a civic employee working in the Estate department in Byculla.

So, in the last few days, pamphlets have sprung up at the civic headquarters, which in effect congratulate Abhijeet for becoming a finalist on the show and tell employees, 'We should feel proud because Abhijeet's victory is our victory'.

One of the pamphlets gives the SMS details, the phone number where voters can cast their vote and ends with a ringing 'Remember, it is us and only us who can lead Abhijeet to victory'.

The pamphlet has four signatories, including Sharad Rao, leader of the union.

The wave of support has overwhelmed Abhijeet's family.

abhijeet would have won no matter where he's from. everyone had an equal chance of voting so it doesnt matter where in india they were from. these topics just make no sense and creates more anger among fans. do u get pleasure by instigating such hatred?so plz stop creating these kinds of unnecessary threads to justify wat was never meant to be.it's really high time u got over it.
