They consider themselves Hindu, but they're not the North's version of Hindu.

Good or bad, the North's version of the average Hindu is UC, Hindi speaking, vegetarian. The average TN folks don't meet these three criteria (and perhaps disassociate themselves very strongly from these criteria), which is the reason for the disconnect.

I won't get into who thinks who is what hindu

Has been the case for years. Scorched Earth policies chalengi inko as long as the party they dislike or don't consider 'cool enough' doesn't win
