Have you been to temples in Tamil Nadu? They're packed with the local populace- they're pretty religious over there.
They consider themselves Hindu, but they're not the North's version of Hindu.
Good or bad, the North's version of the average Hindu is UC, Hindi speaking, vegetarian. The average TN folks don't meet these three criteria (and perhaps disassociate themselves very strongly from these criteria), which is the reason for the disconnect.
