In this case, 28 years since Khamoshi released in 1996.

FatalFlaw, I think that Bhansali is one of the most renowned directors/filmmakers of Hindi Cinema (which got duly rewarded), but you wrote about successful...and in this forum people mostly associate "successful" with success at the box office.

He directed 10 movies in 28 years (which isn't 'much' in comparison to other directors/filmmakers) with 6 of them being successful (let's say 2/3).

Karan Johar even directed less (in 26 years), but relative to the boxoffice he was more successful than Bhansali.

Maybe, one should define some adjective-meanings for a better comparison. What - to you - means the word "successful"?

That movie itself flopped tho. An in between he had Saawariya/Guzaarish which also failed. In that sense I think we can say alot of directors have had long careers. Yash Chopra's career spanned from late 60s to early 2010's. An yes he had clunkers in between but so did SLB

IKR. I don’t know much about the lives of courtesans back then but the way Bhansali shows it with all that grandeur, doesn’t it glorify that pathetic culture a bit? He showed such grand palaces and beautiful tawaifs kinda living like princesses, of course he showed their adversities as well but as usual his large sets and decorations etc overshadows the cusp of the story.

HeeraMandi’s storyline wasn’t that great but for period drama lovers or those who like seeing glamourous sets it is a good watch. It is actually fun to watch this series in the dark smiley36

Considering the way the quality of shows dropped over the years (regardless of language or country), I think the No.1 position is somewhat justified smiley36

I genuinely liked it mainly cause of the sets and outfits. Performances were okay too, some surprise packages.

As far as I know it was a well respected part of Lahore as the Tawaifs (like Chandramuki in Devdas) mainly dealt with the nobility of the region. They had been well trained and skilled dancers and also female entertainers (including sex, of course, but not only).

The British colonisation harmed also this cultural part of Indian life and slowly made Heera Mandi into what is called a 'red-light district'.

It would have done lot better if SLB hadn’t cast Sharmin in lead role and invested more on writing .
