Rohit angry and hurt
The Roy boy is upset over his ouster from Nach Baliye and not even being nominated at ITA awards
Subhash K Jha
From the illegitimate heir in Swabhimaan to the hot-tempered young politician in Sarrkar, Rohit Roy has played volatile characters to perfection.
t now, he has a lot of reason to lose his cool. Being eliminated from the popular dance competition Nach Baliye, for one. "I thought my wife Manasi and I got eliminated too early. But that's okay. TV shows are all about TRPs. They must have their own reasons."
What hurts more is losing out at the Indian Television Academy awards. "Everyone thought I stood a good chance of winning for my performance in Sarrkar. Let alone win, I didn't even get nominated! I don't understand the logistics behind these awards. One might as well go with the Star Parivaar awards, where you know the winners are restricted to a certain circle of soaps."
Rohit has moved outside the Balaji cocoon. There are rumours that he and Ekta don't see eye to eye. He says, "I've just finished my work in Balaji's Kkusum. Both my wife and I have been part of it, though never at the same time. But by the time Manasi took over as Kkusum, I had already left the serial. I don't mind working in another Balaji soap if the role and set-up seem right. Some people may not like Ekta's way of working. But she runs a multi-crore empire. She knows what she's doing. And she's providing rozi-roti to so many out-of-work actors."
Rohit is still hopeful about a film career, "Cinema will always remain my first love. I can't let go of my dream. I thought Hriday Shetty's Plan last year was my new calling card in to Bollywood. The first-half went well. But something went completely wrong in the second half."
Now, Rohit is looking forward to another large-screen appearance in Pritish Nandy Productions Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena. "It's more like a cameo. I did it because I loved director Suparn Verma's script. They're kind enough to bill me as a guest in the credits. I don't want people to think I'm eager to run back to cinema. I'm happy doing television which has given me everything."
He is looking forward to Ravi Chopra's Viraasat next year, "I guess Viraasat will overlap with Sarrkar. But it's worth it. It's a brilliant subject. And the Chopras are terrific producers."
