Remakes: How to ruin a cult movie!
This is one movie which could easily have destroyed Ram Gopal Verma's more than a decade old career. I could hardly fathom how he managed to conjure up the guts to remake an epic like 'Sholay'. What is even more surprising is the clumsiness with which he's managed to handle the plot and make the movie extremely ineffective. This guy has some serious talent for screw ups. His casting was the most bizarre aspect. Seriously, why would you choose a guy who can't even speak Hindi properly, to play the role of Thakur? The scenes involving him and Gabbar had him speaking Hindi with a mallu accent while Gabbar made weird faces. There's more bad news. He now claims to comeback with vengeance and make 'Sholay' again. Run for your lives is all I can say!
If you thought Shahrukh Khan did a wonderful job in 'Don', you are surely suffering from an acute disorder of the nervous system. The charisma and style of the original 'Don' didn't need fancy cars and sophisticated weapons for support. When SRK in the movie says, "Khhaa-miii-niii", I anticipated the torture that lay ahead. The movie had great looks, songs and all the fancy jazz that was needed, but the one thing that was missing was Amitabh Bachchan. And the one aspect they could have done without was Shahrukh Khan. As usual he acted like a schizophrenic patient stuck in an iceberg. Worst of all, they changed the climax of the movie. Suddenly, Don was the nice guy and poor Vijay had to die. A complete anticlimax, I would say!
If remaking one of the most acclaimed movies and casting big stars in it is the way to success, 'Umrao Jaan' is your ticket to reality. Despite a portly Abhishek Bachchan and wifey dear Aishwarya Rai, this JP Dutta directed flick didn't even get an audience in its first week. Probably Mr. Dutta should stick to the war documentaries he generally makes. The movie moves at the pace of a snail and I found it very difficult to relate to the movie which belonged to some godforsaken era. The only person who gained anything from the movie is Abhishek Bachchan. It was during the filming of 'Umrao Jaan' that Abhishek and Aishwarya started bonding.
'Victoria No. 203' is the remake of the 70's film with the same name. This one failed to live up to the success of the latter though. It's directed by the ever struggling Anant Mahadevan. Anant has been responsible for quite a few disasters on the silver screen. Movies like the 'Dil Vil Pyar Vyar' which was more like a RD Burman music fest more than anything else, 'Dil Maange More' featuring a Shahid Kapoor yet to hit puberty and many more. Wonder how this guy manages to deliver flops after flops. By now, he's almost perfected the art. The cast of the movie had only Om Puri and Anupam Kher as big names. Other names like Jimmy Shergill, Preeti Jhangiani and late actor Vinod Mehra's wannabe actress daughter Soniya( whose launch pad it was) don't even deserve a mention.
This colossal fiasco is thankfully in the making and I am keeping my fingers crossed, hoping that it never gets made. I haven't been able to digest the fact that Satish Kaushik has chosen Himesh Reshammiya to play Rishi Kapoor's role in the original 'Karz'. To begin with, this guy could even make an donkey feel good about his looks and please, the singing has to stop. This nasal calamity we've been so kind to, seems to have bought a new hair piece and has been flaunting it like he was born with it. Basically we'll have to deal with rejuvenated Himesh Reshammiya, some obscure looking chick and an old Urmila Matondkar. Probably the makers anticipated the soporific properties of the flick and aptly followed the title with 'zzz'.
