Mai is informed by one of the society members about a relay race for women that will happen in 3 weeks. Mai refuses to participate saying that they won't be able to run. That same day, while returning back home, a thief snatches Baku's purse and runs away. Mai and Baku try their level best to chase him but in vain. The thief was too fast for them and he escapes. They go to the police station to lodge a complaint. The inspector comments that they should have followed the thief right till the end and caught him. Mai and Baku are stunned at this comment. He also remarks that when women demand equal rights as men, they should also shoulder equal responsibilities.
Mai, who is still not over the inspector's comment, declares that she will participate in the race, which will take place in the society. Everyone is shocked and firmly oppose her decision. Mai questions them about the last time they ran. Everyone is speechless. She reminds them that Umeed Bhavan women have crossed major hurdles in life and have emerged victorious. This race is nothing in front of it.
Next day at the practice, Mai does not find many supporters of her decision. Nevertheless, she decides to stick to it. Slowly, everyone except Shaku and Kanchan join them when they realize what Mai said was right. Kanchan is furious with Mai since she refused to buy a new oven for the kitchen. Shaku was initially hesitant because of her health but eventually agrees to take part.
From then on, they practice hard. Each time they fall, they get up stronger and more focused. No extent of pain discourages them from running. They break all mental barriers and get into salwar suits from sari's since they are easier to run in. Anuj gets all of them canvas shoes.
A cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh is announced for the winner. Mai explains that they should run not just for the sake of participating, but to win the race. Their focus should be to ace in everything they do.
