Yes, they were in a relationship/affair whatever you call it.

Babita wanted a certain portion of Amitabh's family wealth allotted legally in Abhishek and Karisma's name as security. Abhishek was nobody at the time (some would argue he still isn't a big actor) of the engagement and Karisma was a fully established successful actress at her peak.

Babita's own experiences had been horrible where she had been forced to quit acting at her peak like all other Kapoor bahus back in the day and then she had to split with Randhir. She had to practically raise both her daughters by herself so she didn't want the same to happen to her daughters.

Yes, she comes across as the villain in this story but if you see where she was coming from, she just wanted security for her daughter because she knew Karisma would have compromised her career with the wedding. Today times have changed with Bebo, DP, Alia working post marriage but 20 years ago that wasn't the case. Even if they wanted to work, producers directors didn't/hardly cast them. However, Jaya B and AB Sr did not agree to this so it was called off.

I actually blame Babita for getting a heartbroken Karisma married on the rebound into money with a rich businessman who was already married once or twice before. She should have let Karisma get over it and focus on her career. Again this is 20-25 years ago so you have to consider culturally where we were and a little about Punjabi/Sindhi culture as well. She must have felt a broken engagement did not reflect well and there was desperation probably on all fronts to get her married. Karisma and Rani are still my favorite actresses from childhood and teenage and I hope they do more films now.
