Together
The sheets were cold beneath Armaan. He tossed and turned- trying to pull over the comforter up his head and counting till a 100 sheep but nothing could help him. He was always a light sleeper. It helped him shape his career - but sometimes he really needed a good night sleep. It did not help much that Abhira had a habit of tapping the pen on the table as she studied. She was sprawled over the table- muttering and scratching on the paper and poking him a good enough times to understand a topic.
'I must tell you- that its high time you start sleeping at time. I told you not to eat after 10, but then who would agree with Abhira.' she said, not batting an eyelash towards him.
Armaan had an eye-roll moment at this point. 'You better read fast, you have a test tomorrow.'
Abhira sneered at him- but it ended in both of them laughing at each other.
It was a job, making her go to college.
He remembers the day so clearly- the first day of Abhira's law college.
--------
'You think all of them are this dumb.' Abhira snapped at him- as she selected a pair of light jeans to wear.
Armaan who was about to make her understand that only lying their way out can take her to college stopped in his tracks. 'Now, what is that.' there was a clear resignation in his voice.
'Jeans?' Abhira answered clueless- but understood the disappointment in his question. 'You want to get me bullied on my first day- by wearing frilly sarees to a LAW college ?' she looked over- behind him- raising her hands in dismay- 'Hi everyone! This is Abhira- 22 and married.' She cried out in disgust.
'I am making plans to hide this from my family, for atleast some time and here you are trying to scrub it into their faces.' Armaan pulled out a pastel saree 'Wear this for now and we are leaving in 5 minutes.'
Abhira stomped her feet like 10-year-olds and Armaan looked mechanically at her- trying to hold his laugh. 'You know you can change at the firm, in my cabin.' He strutted his way out making Abhira a tad bit relieved about her reputation.
He was going to lie, straight out of his clean white teeth.
'Abhira needs therapy.' Armaan announced at the table and Abhira for once had all the food morsel thrown out of her mouth as she choked on her husband's lies.
He explained to every one of his family members and an irritated matriarch- his Dadisa, that how Abhira's mother's death has given a slap to her mental health.
And for once- only his Dadisa agreed immediately.
'We all can see that.' his Phupha shook his head at the ruined dining table - as Abhira still coughed harder and confused.
The next moment as Abhira remembers clearly- Armaan held her hand and dragged her out of the house. 'You are going to be late'
She had never imagined she would be on a secret pact with anybody but her mother her entire life.
Whatever pact she and Armaan had- she wanted more of it. For once - she did not feel lonely in this massive Poddar mansion, because of this empathetic man- she gets to call her husband.
As he drove- he irritatingly stopped at the yellow light at every signal. Besides that - he is a good man, and maybe her mother always new much more and better than she could fathom.
