Was Sridevi a gay icon (according to Bombay Talkies)?

In Bombay Talkies, one of the segments says that between Madhuri and Sridevi, that Madhuri was beloved by the straights and Sridevi was loved by the gays. That Sridevi was a gay icon. Is this true or revisionist history?

Yes it was true. To be fair the reason why these two images were different was because of the roles they took + their acting/personality styles. Madhuri was always prim and proper in front of the cameras, whereas Sri was more switch-on/switch-off. Hema Malini is also very popular with straights.

You can see this now as well. Ranveer is more popular with gay people than Ranbir.

Rekha was VERY popular with lgbtq people but she never addressed it because of the rumors with her secretary lol. It's so obvious when you see any popular/trendy styling of icons, and Rekha wearing it 30+ years ago lol. (Madonna, Cher, Lana).

Thank you for confirming. Madhuri's roles seemed more about her dancing and provocative outfits which would appeal to male viewers. Many have said this is why her comebacks have never succeeded because audiences were only interested in her for eye candy. Whereas Sridevi's roles were always about the strength of the roles.

I never noticed but it doesn't surprise me that Ranveer is more popular with gay people than Ranbir. They have better taste than the straight men idolizing Ranbir or the straight women lusting after him.

I figured Rekha was probably the other gay icon besides Sridevi. I noted this in my thread about Khoon Bhari Maang vs Sherni that Rekha's costumes and looks seemed designed to make her a gay icon. This film and Madam X especially.
