In the movies. In RNBJ it was fine because it made sense for the plot but in Zero and especially JHMS it was a huge problem

Oh, I sea...as I got another impression, I would like to elaborate why I find that they had to look awkward together...because of the roles and their interaction...and honestly, it was just this awkwardness that made their interaction so attractive (because they started to feel for each other ...and tried to deny it).
Yet it would be a lengthy post which I would only write if there is interest
You’ve never shipped him with his actual living and breathing wife?

Now, that I know what "shipping" means...in real life an absolutely yes for SRK and Gauri

Sure you can make an argument for it, just like with Katrina/SRK in JTHJ but in Romance movies chemistry is Essential
And SRK usually has such great chemistry with his Co stars so they stick out like a sore thumb imho. Then again I really didn’t like SRK's last 3 Romance movies in general (JTHJ, JHMS and Zero) for various reasons, huge downgrade compared to his 90s-2000s movies
I'm glad he is going the action star Route now, it fits him much better now
You see, if you didn't like these movies, it's your personal feeling...and I won't discuss feelings
Nevertheless, I will still write this long essai
Personally, I'm not a friend of this 'chemical' thing... to me, it is more important if I can relate to the emotional relationship the characters have and if they are able to make me feel for them...and gosh! how much they made me feel for them in JHMS...so much underlying erotism, especially from Harry's side who gave up to deny to himself how much he had fallen in love with a still denying Sejal. He genuinely didn't want anymore of his volatile affairs with female tourists and women he slept with to not feeling lonely. In Portugal, Sejal gave in to her attraction to Harry but his feeling and mind told him that she wasn't ready to commit to him (in Portugal, he himself was already emotionally committed),
It was - imo - a rather intense and mature romance movie...to me, better than Tamasha.
As for Zero, I also could relate to the way both gave exactly the interpersonnel feeling that went with the characters and the situations...
First, Bauua just wanted to charm Aafia to probably get a ONS (which he got)...he was neither in love with her nor interested to invest himself more...his emotional interest focussed on Babita (Katrina) - especially after getting kissed on the lips by her.
Then, I liked that he didn't marry and honestly told her why not ...he didn't know about the pregnance (and she didn't tell him)...Aafia was deeply hurt, Bauua was happy to ran away and go to the competition.
It was only through becoming Babita's close friend that he realised having done a mistake in rejecting Aafia and, at least, he wanted to apologize for having left her at the wedding. Yet it needed an effort to leave Babita he hadn't the force for, so he made Babita throwing him out...which she did (also with her cheating lover).
Aafia threatened Bauua shooting at him. Why? (she had to have the weapon because of training a grown ape, I suppose) Well, she didn't want him near to her. But like SRK often says to friends: when you have a child, it changes you as a person...and it was, what happened... the wonderful street sequence shows how Bauua changes emotionally.
But Aafia doesn't...the hurt was so deep that she can't (and later won't) relate to his love for her...it needed a larger-than-life thing (something really big, even bigger than the 'Holi celebration' in the hotel) to which Bauua seriously would commit to change her mind...and it needed him to not give up to do that for her.
So, basically, Zero wasn't a romance at all, it was about commitment (and among others - on one of the meta-levels - a sign of SRK's commitment to making a movie, to be an actor, to bring out the magic of cinema and to - always hopefully - entertain the audience).
Zero is an outstanding movie, easy to dismiss with petty arguments, not so easy to relate to the persons and the story. And it came as a time when it had become not only a leaded campaign but also fashionable to bash SRK whenever possible.
But, when others thought, he was broken, he was already planning his next moves/movies right from January 2019 on... and when the negative after-Covid-effect on the boxoffice started to vanish a bit through government-friendly movies, he came back ("with a bang") as a Pathaan, with no religion, being adopted by India, left at the doorstep of a cinema, serving his adoptive mother as a RAW agent, wounded, recovered, still wanting to serve...and doing it...again (on a meta-level) by reviving the joy to "going to the movies", opening the boxoffice also for already shut Single Sreens...and getting to know that he was still loved.
