although deepika had a decent cameo but still the movie belonged to Srk and his double role and also Nayanthara as the lead actress is fantastic in the movie and her combat scenes are amazing!

There was and there is no need to "rescue" SRK.

Deepika can be considered as a 'lucky charm' (if one believes in that).

Imo, it's more about the interplay of both. After SRK-Kajol it's the best with the generation of women in the thirties. They have reached an extreme valuable comfort zone to showcase love & erotism.
