Sunny Deol is one of the top 10 Superstars of all time. He has the same ATBBs as SRK(Pathaan, KKHH, DDLJ) & Salman(MPK, HAHK, BB) and these three are only behind Aamir all time(5). So "Made a name for himself" till the 90s is so disingenuous. Just as disingenuous as trying to judge his career in his late 50s & 60s.

I'm just going to leave it here....you're missing the whole point. You still believe that DCH had some cultural impact when it didn't. An Emraan Hashmi had more of a cultural impact in the mid 2000s when everyone was trying to copy his small budget success formula.

i will not chime into the topic on the impact on what movies had impact or not. However, only on the ATBB part. I am assuming u visited BOI. That site changes their verdicts otherwise Salman was given more ATBBS like dabanng is also in the list.

Gadar's lifetime earnings were a little over ₹ 76 crore, Lagaan's were a little under ₹ 34 crore. (This line is taken from n NDTV article). Gadar collected double the amount. DCH 39.72 crores.

Aamir's two films combined collected less than Gadar in 2001.

And industry chose to ignore it, people didn't forget. Roaring success of Gadar 2 is the proof that it was, it is and will always be special.

Haven't seen G2 but G1 cannot be called mediocre by any standards. It had great production values, superhit music, playback by top singers and led by top actors of the time

Having said that..

Lagaan was the first BW movie to use sync sound and then it became common

DCH has few iconic dialogues just like Gadar. There r moments in life where u find how this film's dialogues and songs resonate with u.

For me DCH is special

Yep

Also Aamir literally gave 4 - ghajini, 3 idiots , pk , dangal in the last few years ….just because something is doing well, it’s not some opportunity to diss other stuff that also did well and had an even bigger impact in the larger scheme of things..

Kuch bhi

My 2 cents.

BOI is clearly biased against anything it perceives as non-desi or western. It also tries to diminish Aamir's stardom (or put down Ranveer). But some of the facts it uses are true.

To put down Gadar as just a hit movie is wrong. Hit movies come multiple times every year. Gadar is a monstrous hit and extremely loved. One of the best of all times in terms of how many people watched it. I still remember my first year at college when it was released and the way it was celebrated. And to put that down to jingoism / anti Pakistan narrative is incorrect. It had many beautiful moments that moved, charmed or disturbed the audience - very high in emotions that all felt raw and real. Thats why the movie connected. You could empathize with the villain as well. Even if every other movie of that director and actor is a massive flop (which isn't the case with the actor) that would not take anything away from this one movie. There are many artists who are never able to match up to their own masterpiece.

Also Sunny is not only an action star or one movie wonder - more than action he is famous for his impactful dialogue delivery ( like in Damini, Gadar). He has had many flops in last 20 years as he didn't know when to retire and couldn't choose good movies but in right role, he is still loved.

Coming to Lagaan, it is a beautiful movie that should not be brought down to prop up Gadar (which actually needs no propping). It's the one I recently shared with my teenaged son when he was sick and he absolutely loved it. We watched it twice in 2 days and had a great time. It was not that big of a blockbuster business wise but still a big hit and a great movie that has also aged well.

Problem is that Lagaan was perceived as classy and Gadar was ridiculed as mass movie. Which is wrong. I don't know who sets these narratives in media and don't want to find out. But I actually would love if Gadar gets its due now (in terms of media coverage - people anyways love it). I never wanted to watch Gadar 2 as wasn't impressed by the trailer but seeing the high level of excitement at a mall (where I could hear excited cheers from 2 floors below), I decided to watch and absolutely loved the overall experience. Nostalgia is definitely a part of it but I have no issues with any country, any religion and that was not a part of why I ( and everyone else) loved this movie. Nor is it the focus of this movie. It was people cheering loudly for the return of a hero that was so celebrated in people's hearts but not in the media.

I absolutely resonate 100% with what you said.
@ the last paragraph: that’s exactly what is wrong with the Hindi Cinema. Lagaan is a beautiful movie and doesn’t need to be propped up or be put down w.r.t Gadar but that’s exactly what has happened. The media and the people who run the media from behind the scenes basically get to decide the narrative about a movie. They made Gadar look like some kind of a jingoistic movie which only ran because of the people’s emotions were high against Pakistan due to the Kargil war. Its beautiful story, music, screenplay, Tara Singh, Sakeena were never highlighted. I personally found out only recently ( to my utter shock) that Gadar was received better than Lagaan, while all this time I was made to believe that Lagaan is the most successful movie while Gadar happens to be just another mass masala movie with anti Muslim elements. Then I went and checked out Gadar only to find out that it was nothing like what they made people believe about it. I was simply blown away by the beautiful story. Then I found out the entire filmography of Sunny Deol and got further shocked to realize how his movies have been systematically sidelined by the so called media thereby making it impossible for the newbies like me to find them or find him out. All because he didn’t fit in to the so called popular narrative that was set by a few who own it. Both Gadar and Lagaan can and should co exist. They are not very different from each other in the way they entertain. Just like a Sunny Deol can co exist with an Aamir Khan in the same industry. There is no need to eliminate one to prop up the other. I agree G2 is in no way a fitting sequel to its legendary prequel but I am so glad it brought people back to the cinemas giving happiness and livelihood to a lot of people. More importantly, I am just glad Sunny Deol was given another opportunity to let people realize that he still has it in him to draw the crowds,
