I think that was the whole idea, for katha to be vocal. And the situation is so charged up and they had an audience so Viaan was focused on diffusing it rather than paying attention to what’s being said.

So, Viaan should fight Mr. Grewal, who is much older than him and that too in front of an office crowd. Didn't he try to calm down both Mr. Grewal and his mom? He calmed down both of them. But, he has more control over his mom so, he had no choice but to focus on his mom first. This is what anyone will do if they wan't to diffuse the situation. If person in front of you is not calming, you try to calm the person you know much better who is more closer to you because you can enter his/her personal space and physically comfort them so that they become calm and diffuse the situation. Viaan can't physically touch Mr. Grewal and separate him from the situation.

These are some basic human psychology
