We I know it's not the forum to discuss but from political perspective (not sure if that was his intent) it was a very good decision.

The kingdoms surrounding him Avanti, Chhedi, Matasya were all ruled by Satyavati's brothers. In such scenario it's always advisable to make alliance with such kingdoms and what better than marrying their sister. But if they married their sister in that family they will want their nephew as the crown prince.
