......Wow, and I am late to the party yet again! :( Sorry, asli duniya did not give me a chance to be a part of the debate but this time, I dedicated enough time to go through the comments as well!
I have thoughts....but first, all I want to do is scream into my pillow really loudly and then rage at Arnav for not communicating!! JUST WHY??? I can understand feeling aimless after success, I can understand not feeling a sense of achievement whatever you do, I can understand the immense guilt of letting your family (Khushi) down, of being incapable of doing the ONE thing that would make them happy. But why does this man, just not talk!! He does not share with a therapist, does not share with Akash and Payal, and most of all, does not talk to Khushi, (a woman who has never once judged him!). And this goes on for years and he lets it fester!! WHYYYY!!! And as I am typing this, on some level, I do understand being unable to talk about those topics. Even at the cost of your life as you know it! Sigh, this makes my heart hurt. And I truly feel pity for him for not having a support system or actually not having the ability to employ his support system.
His issues with having children are more complicated than he himself realizes. He was truly surprised when Khushi brought it up for the first time. He rages every time having a child is mentioned. This does not sound like someone who does not want a child because he does not want responsibility. I know people who do not want children because they do not want that responsibility and they do not rage about not having children...
As for what happened at Panchgani, I think it has been discussed over and over again, and I belong to the camp that believes it was rape. Actually, on the first read, your brain tends to focus on the fact that he eventually gives consent but then, I did a funny little exercise: I read the Panchgani part of the story with a "random female-name" in place of "Arnav" and a "random male-name" in place of Lavanya and it quickly became very very clear that a "No Means No."
He said NO, not once, but many many times! The setting, the place and his misjudgment at being there has been debated but it does not change that fact that he did not give verbal consent. And even the bodily-consent he supposedly gave, he was not in his senses to actually "give" it. The bodily-consent was taken, not given.
In my mind, there is no doubt that there was malice involved. Lavanya was too drunk to get up at the couch, but sober enough to pull off a "drunken man" (who easily weighs more than her) off the ledge of the balcony? Having said that, even if you remove malice, or the prior context of the story about Lavanya's obsession and consider Panchgani an isolated event, I still believe it was non-consensual!
But my heart truly goes out for Khushi! She is the one who has lost everything like a person who tries to hold onto sand in their hand. Everything slipped out of her hands despite her best intentions. And now, it looks like Arnav supposedly got another woman pregnant. If that is true (and I hope to God it isn't), it will be an impossible thing for Khushi to get over. For some other woman to get what she truly wanted (even if that woman got it without consent)... I hope her Devi Maiyya is not that cruel on her!

He was thinking about splitting anyway, wasn’t he? He had become sure of wanting a divorce. He’d say this to Khushi too. That he was already planning to split. That he had already thought they had grown apart. Maybe then she will have a closure for his infidelity? Maybe then she can take his unhappiness as the reason that he had allowed such a thing to happen?
Because if she looked him in the eye and asked him, how could he do this to her? He would not have an answer. He did not know how could he do this to her.
The above lines validate what I had assumed about Arnav before this chapter. He did what he did out of his guilt. Guilt of not being able to give her a baby and guilt of his "supposed cheating". I am really not sure where they go from here, but I would like to read an Arnav Khushi endgame, because I would like to see how someone can overcome demons of this size. It is truly unimaginable in real life and hence, I can only hope to see it in fiction. :)
P.S. Those "fungi-like" things in Lavanya's purse are generally not associated with disinhibited sexual behavior, but another class of psychedelics is:MDMA. Fun fact: These drugs are now being used to treat depression legally, in some countries. :)
