CH 11 – Plan Zero?

Keeping his eyes moving from Tanu's blood-thirsty face to Manthan's smiling one, Sharvan grows especially worried about the brief moment of silence passing through the canteen.

"Hopefully I don't ever have to find out," Sharvan answers Tanu's rhetorical question in an attempt to break the deadly silence.

"You are such a sweet talker Khanna," Manthan walks up to the table where Sharvan and Tanu are sitting. He flips a chair around so that the back of it faces the table and takes a seat right next to Tanu.

"Virani, you have no manners, do you? We are waiting for someone so stop taking up space at the table."

"Tanu, woh…Manthan…"

Sharvan tries to slowly explain the truth as a slight frown and then a huge grin displays itself on Manthan's face.

"Oh no. Sharvan, you didn't tell her?"

"I was just getting to that and didn't I tell you to be here in half an hour. Why are you so early?" he moves his entire frame to face Manthan.

"Man, I was bored. What was I suppose to do?"

Manthan and Sharvan continue to engross themselves in their conversation and ignore the presence of an ever growing angry Tanu.

"Wait!"

Manthan and Sharvan's discourse comes to a halt as they turn to look at Tanu.

"This is the bigger better brain you were talking about?" she points her finger at Manthan's head.

"Well…"

"Yes, babe. I'm your love guru," Mathan throws his arms out as if he was declaring himself king.

"Oh god! We are so screwed!"

As she gets up, she kicks Manthan's chair. Manthan falls down on the ground with the chair landing on top of him and the entire canteen bursts into laughter including Sharvan.

"When I get off this floor, the last thing you will be doing Sharvan is laughing."

Sharvan closes his mouth and goes to help Manthan.

* * *

"Kyun Nahin?"

"Because dad's already embarrassed and angry by my behavior in the parking lot. I can't afford to displease him anymore by ignoring his instructions. He told me to stay home the entire weekend, unless I plan on apologizing to Adi, then and only then can I go out to the Mehras' place. But there's no way I am ever going to say sorry to that dim witted fool, so I can't go to your birthday party."

"Oh, that sucks!" Maithili's friend, Lina says as she shifts her attention to a cute boy walking towards her in the hallway of their college.

As Lina waves coyly to the boy, a hand pops out of the open elevator to Maithili's left and pulls her in. The elevator doors close immediately.

"Did you see that fine specimen who just walked by us, Mets?" Lina looks behind her to stare at the cute boy until she finally notices the absence of her friend.

"Mets? Maithili?!"

* * *

The captor covers Maithili's mouth while he holds her from behind and pulls the emergency stop button in the elevator. Maithili bites the hand that's on her mouth and a second later, with her bag at her side, turns around and starts blindly hitting the figure in front of her.

"Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch!! What … are … you … doing?!" the figure manages to yell out as Maithili beats him and he stumbles to the ground face down.

"Adi?" Maithili stops bashing the man, but still holds on tightly to her bag in case her captor is a master at mimicking voices.

"Yeah!" the man lifts his face off the elevator floor to reveal that he is in fact Adi.

"Oh, I'm so …"

Maithili stops mid sentence and ponders her unsaid words. Then, she takes her bag and continues to hit Adi.

"Hey!" Adi ducks his face onto the floor.

"You think kidnapping me is funny!" she keeps on bringing her bag down on Adi's back, until the bag's strap comes off at which point Maithili begins to use her foot to kick him.

"Look at your size! You are no kid! And who is laughing at this situation!"

Finally getting fed up of being physically abused, Adi grabs a hold of one of Maithili's hand and pulls her down towards him. As she struggles to remain standing, her free hand accidentally hits the emergency stop button and the elevator begins to move. She fails in her attempt to stand on her two feet because Adi's pull is too strong to have no effect. Maithili lands on top of Adi with her face on his chest.

"You weigh a ton," he says softly so that the sound of his voice barely reaches her ears.

In utter frustration, she lifts her angry face off his chest and a wave of fear passes through her leaving no trace of anger. She was a few dismal centimeters away from Adi's grinning face.

"What happen, beautiful? Cat got your tongue?"

With great bravery, Adi forces his right hand to touch Maithili's face and move a few tendrils of her hair behind her shoulder. He knew that this movement might have ended badly because Maithili could easily have bitten his finger off. But she seemed to be unable to do much of anything; her world seemed to have frozen as she realized she liked the warmth that was surrounding her at that moment. On the other hand, Adi found it hard to come up with his usual flirty remarks as he watched her stillness and not wanting it to stop, he placed his arms around her waist. The last thing he wanted was for her to roll off him and start beating him up again. Their moment is interrupted as the elevator doors pop open and a crowd of their peers begin the form itself outside the elevator. A lot of gasping occurs in the crowd and three particular students are amazed by what they see.

"Well boy and girl, looks like our work is done," Manthan Virani puts his arms around Sharvan and Tanu.

"We didn't do anything, idiot," Tanu states as she pushes Manathan's arm off her shoulder.

"And apparently, nothing needed to be done in the first place," Sharvan smiles as he folds his arms.

CH 12 – Troubles, the Car Kind

Although the gasping and gossiping continues outside the elevator, Maithili and Adi seem unfazed by it initially. They still stay frozen in place for a few more moments and then simultaneously they both turn to face the direction from which the gasps are coming from. As they do this, several camera flashes cause them to jump up from the floor of the elevator. Scared and angry out of her wits, Maithili turns to Adi and slaps him across the face. She then picks up her torn bag and walks out, clearing her path through the crowd by giving out her deadly glare.

The crowd watches her walk away and then they all look around at Adi who stands holding the left side of his face. Sharvan walks over to him and shakes him to pull him out of his daze.

"Did she just…."

Adi mumbles to himself as his face refuses to appear shocked and anger grabs a hold of his facial expressions.

"Oh, she is going to be so sorry!"

Adi begins to walk out of the elevator but Sharvan holds him back and presses a button that closes the elevator doors on a still-frustrated Adi's face.

"Oh man. Where did Mets go?"

"I'll go find her," Tanu walks off.

"I'll help," says an all-too-eager Manthan.

* * *

Stomping her feet out of the college grounds, Mathili reaches the parking lot and starts flumbing around in her purse. Tanu comes up to her sister.

"What are you doing, Di?"

"Looking for my car keys."

"Um…Di, do you have amnesia?"

"What are you talking ab-…"

Reality hits Mathili and she slaps her forehead.

"So do you need a ride, Maithili?"

Manthan says as he runs up to them. He had been forced to run after Tanu as she had been trying to get rid of him in the college hallways.

"Hello!" Tanu moves her hand in front of Manthan's face.

"Do you know who I am?"

Manthan reaches out and takes a hold of Tanu's hand. He then bow downs a little and positions himself like a prince about to kiss the hand of a princess.

"A beautiful pain in my - … Aaahhh!"

Before he could finish his statement, Tanu grabs his hand, the same hand that had been holding her hand a second ago, and bends it backwards.

"A pain in your what?"

"A pain? What idiot said you're a pain. Tell me his name and I'll take care of him."

The discomfort becomes too hard to take and Manthan bends down onto the floor.

"Maithili is my sister and she doesn't need your pitiful help, understood!"

"Understood, now let go of my hand! I don't wanna hit a girl!"

"Ha, I'd like to see you try to hit me. I would rip this hand of yours out!"

Tanu finally releases Manthan from her death-grip.

"Di, lets go ….. Di?"

Tanu and Manthan look for Mets with their eyes.

"Where are my car keys?"

Tanu searches her pockets and comes up empty. She looks at Manthan.

"Don't look at me!"

Just then, a car speeds past them and someone yells from inside it.

"Thanks little sis!"

"Di! Stop!"

Tanu runs after her car but to no avail. A laughing Manthan comes up behind her.

"Ah, karma."

Tanu steps back and slams her elbow into his gut.

"Ah, stupidity," she says as she gets Manthan's keys out of his pocket while he stands holding his stomach.

* * *

Maithili drives through the relatively empty road with the windows down and the wind blowing her hair around. Despite her constant struggle to keep her hair off her face, she smiles as she sits in the driver's seat.

It feels so good to be able to finally drive myself around, but I'll have to get Tanu a very expensive gift to make this up to her. And this is all that stupid Adi's fault.

Just as Maithili thinks this, a car comes from her left and stops right in from of her, blockading her. She manages to step on the brakes just in time to prevent damage to Tanu's car.

"Who is that lunatic?"

She looks over at the car and begins to feel pure repugnance enter her state of mind as the lunatic driver gets out of the car.

Smirking at her with his shades on, he walks over and takes a seat on the hood of Tanu's car. She is unable to stop herself from going to him.

"What is wrong with you, Adi?" she slams the car door shut and it's locked.

"Payback for that slap you so daringly gave me," he strokes his cheek.

"I should have given you two slaps maybe then your brain might have returned back to its correct position inside your head because let's face it, you're insane!"

"No, not insane. Fierce."

"Crazy."

"Beautiful."

"Repulsive."

"Eyes like chocolate."

"Eyes like a dead person's."

"Pure perfection."

"Pure nastiness."

"A gorgeous woman."

"A …….. huh? Wait, you're a woman?"

Maithili starts to laugh and turns to rest her back against the car, looking away from Adi. He gets off the car and walks up really close to her.

"I was talking about you," he whispers to her as she stops laughing.

Feeling hesitant, Maithili tries to move a little but her force is not enough to push a car back. Gathering up enough courage to talk back to Adi when he is being abnormally nice and when he is an abnormally close distance from her, she finally speaks.

"Well…I was talking about you."

"Well, weren't you being sweet."

He smiles at her and moves even closer.

"What are you doing?!" Maithili shrieks as she is not able to control her uneasiness.

"Do I make you nervous?"

"Hardly."

"Liar," he winks at her but steps back a little.

A car horn stops their discourse and they watch as the car pulls up near them. Tanu steps out of the driver's seat and Manthan slowing gets out of the passenger's side still clutching his stomach.

"Di, how could you steal my car?"

"You were too busy to give me a ride ok. So I decided to give myself a ride."

"No I wasn't. What was I busy with?"

"You were too busy flirting."

"What?!"

"Yeah, she is a master flirt. I cannot handle her brand of flirting," Manthan says as he walks past Tanu.

"Do you want me to show you my other techniques?" she looks intensely at Manthan.

"Oh no."

Manthan stands behind Adi, protecting himself as Adi and Maithili chuckle at his fear of Tanu.

"Ok, give me my keys Maithili so I can go and you can get yourself another ride somehow."

"Oh come on Tanu. Don't be mad."

"She doesn't have the keys," Adi cuts in.

"What do you mean?" Tanu looks worried.

"Did she eat them?" Manthan laughs and then apologizes.

"Sorry Mets. I had to say it."

"The keys are in the car …"

"See, Tanu…" Mets interrupts Adi.

"….and the car is locked."

Adi looks on with a grin as Maithili runs to the car and fails to open its door.

"What?! Aaarrrggg!! Ok I need to go get my spare keys."

"I'll come with you," Maithili offers.

"I'd rather drive with the devil incarnated, so come on Virani."

"Of course I'm coming. It's my car!"

"Do you want to spend your night at a hospital?" Tanu asks sweetly as they walk to Manthan's car.

Manthan takes a hard swallow and then with a soft voice says, "No."

"That's like a good boy."

They drive off leaving a very frustrated woman and a very happy man.

Maithili tries to pull on the car door in hopes that it is just jammed. She continues her endeavors and Adi stand behind her while leaning against the car. Maithili sees his hands on both sides of the car, both sides of her.

"Do you want a ride?"

"No, I'm fine."

"That you sure are," his eyes move themselves up and down her figure.

"Are you seriously hitting on me right now?"

She turns around to face him. Bad mistake.

Why does he have to look so…………so………good. Ok, Mets just take him up on his offer before he starts moving up close to you again. Take it!

"Ok. Ok lets go."

She walks away from him and goes to his car. Adi scratches his head.

That was not nearly as much fun as I had anticipated.

"Ok. Lets go."

He walks after her.

CH 13 – Something Stupid

"Why are you grinning like a psycho?"

"Because this psycho has his sights set on his prey."

Adi turns to briefly look at Maithili. He forces himself to stare for only a moment because he knows from prior experience that if he doesn't divert his eyes right away, something stupid might happen; something that could get both the psycho and his prey killed. Adi knows that he could easily get lost in her eyes while his car would roam freely on the late afternoon road and cause an accident.

"I am nobody's prey."

Maithili folds her arms and stares out the windows at the setting sun.

As the rays light up her face, she turns to find Adi looking at her. As soon as his eyes meet hers, his revert back to the road.

"No you sure aren't anybody's prey, but I definitely am – yours," Adi mumbles softly.

"What did you say?"

"Nothing."

Adi's phone rings at that moment and he puts it on speaker.

"Adi, where is my car exactly? I mean at what intersection. I can't seem to find it!" Tanu's voice thunders through the phone.

"What she means is that she lost her car? That's what you call a bad memory," Manthan snickers in the background.

A moment later, Manthan's groans of pain are heard.

Adi tries to stop himself from laughing and says, "Manthan, are you ok?"

"Oh yeah, Adi. He is fine. Aren't you, Manthan."

"She just slapped me on my head!"

Adi and Maithili both burst out laughing as Tanu and Manthan's discourse continues.

"Hang on, Khanna. Did you just call me fine? Never knew you felt that way."

"Don't make me rip this steering wheel out and hit you with you!"

"I am not going to pay for that the second time around. Somebody already took my steering wheel out before."

"Aww, how sad for you. But wow that person must be a really creative girl. I wonder what you did to deserve it."

"I didn't do-… Wait! Wait! How do you know it's a girl?"

"Are you really that clueless?"

"You!! Ah! You!! Ah!!"

"Ok Tanu. Now that you've gotten Manthan speech impaired. Will you two stop fighting?"

"Look who's talking."

Adi throws a glance Mathili's way to which she raises her eyebrow.

"Yeah ok fine. Anyway, your car is a few miles straight from that railway track by the college."

"Ok thanks."

"Hi Tanu," Maithili finally speaks up.

"Are you still mad at me?"

No sound comes from the phone.

"Tanu? Tanu?"

Maithili grabs Adi's phone from its holder and holds it close to her ear.

"Hey that's a very expensive phone. Put it back."

Adi turns on the windows locked and the doors locked buttons to ensure the safety of his phone. He didn't want his passenger to roll down the window and throw his brand new phone out the car.

"She's not answering."

"No way!" Tanu's screams through the phone and Maithili has to jump back as her ear had been inches away from the loud scream.

"You and Adi are in the same car?!"

"Unfortunately yes," Maithili throws a dirty look at Adi.

"Well, your sister would be hitch hiking if it wasn't for me. Who knows what kind of strange person would have picked her up if I hadn't offered her a ride?"

"No more stranger than you, I'm sure," she smiles sarcastically at him.

Adi gives out a fake laugh.

"You know Tanu, your Di didn't even put up a fight when I offered her a ride. I was definitely surprised since I was expecting a wrestling match or something. I mean I know I'm persuasive and all, but I didn't know my powers worked on the ice queen."

Adi stops at a red light and smirks at Maithili who just rolls her eyes causing Adi's already wide grin to become even wider.

"Maybe the fire king is slowly melting the ice queen," Manthan says and thus, ends his temporary speech impairment.

Adi chuckles out loud while staring at Maithili. She narrows her eyes and grinds her teeth at him. Adi acts like he has just been hit with an arrow. He puts his hand on his chest and sighs in pain.

"What happened Adi?"

"Oh nothing much. Maithili just killed me with one look. Uff kya jadoo hai."

Tanu and Manthan's laughter bursts out of Adi's phone.

"Arrgh, yeh ladka. The signal's green duffer."

Maithili folds her arms again as Adi lets go of the brake without looking to check the signal for himself.

Several car horns simultaneously are heard coming from the left and Adi stops the car. He remains confused until he looks at the signal. It's still red. He rolls his head in her direction to see a very amused Maithili smiling back at him.

"Do you want to get us killed?"

"This was nothing. Your driving if anything will get us killed."

"What's all that commotion about?" Tanu asks in a worried tone.

"Your sister thought it would be funny to have a little brush with death."

"Di, stop bothering Adi when he's driving."

Maithili is about to retort back, but Tanu cuts her off.

"I'm going to get off the phone now so that there are no more distractions for Adi and he can get you home safe. Plus, I have a dog in here who I can't wait to get rid off."

"Dog? Where?" Manthan asks.

"Ouch! Why did you have to hit me in the head again?"

"It's not like you can get any dumber than you are."

"Just like you can't get any uglier than you are."

"Ok guys. We'll let you go now too."

Adi cuts off the phone.

"The signal's green now."

Maithili looks down at her fingernails as he looks at her with disbelief. The car behind them starts peeping its car horn at them.

"I told you."

Adi drives on again.

* * *

"Ok now get of my beautiful car."

Adi pulls up in the driveway of Maithili's house.

"With pleasure," Maithili turns to open her side of the car door but it won't bulge.

"You have got to be kidding me!" she yells out in frustration.

"Now, what have you done,"Adi looks over to see that the door is not opening.

"How am I suppose to get out now!"

"You could climb over me and use my door," he opens his door to show her that it still works.

"Climb over you? I would rather die in here then do that. Now, get out!" Maithili pushes Adi until he gives up on his fantasy and gets out of the car.

She steps over to his side and as she holds the arm rest, she notices that the automatic doors locked button is on.

"Adi!"

She gets out of his car and almost slams into him.

"Why did you have the car doors on lock-down?"

"Huh?" Adi tries to act innocent although he knew perfectly well why Maithili couldn't get out.

"Don't play innocent? You aren't good at it?"

She steps up close to him in a very aggressive manner.

"In fact, you aren't good at anything except driving like a criminal who is on the run, flirting with brainless girls, and being slightly good at a few sports."

"That's quite a few things I'm good at," Adi leans against his car and grins at her.

Maithili sighs heavily as she knows that her point was not made in her statement.

"Forget it. An arrogant, ignorant fool like you would never be able to comprehend a statement that's not superficial," she turns away from him and heads to her house.

Adi grows increasingly angry with each word she says until he can't handle it anymore and starts to walk after her. He takes her arm and spins her around so that she faces him.

"You know you forgot about one other thing I'm good at."

"I don't think so."

"Let me show you."

His lips touch hers and he starts kissing her aggressively at first but slows down after a few moments. She remains frozen until her body betrays her and she begins to kiss him back. Time seems to be in slow motion and everything stands still.

She comes back to her senses and pushes him away. Her eyes convey her confusion, her anger, and her feelings. She touches her lips with her fingers and runs inside. Adi stands breathless outside her door.
