You vomitted, I cried...
In my family, we avoid watching certain movies with the kids around...
My family was displaced both during 1947 and 1984. So these films based on such issues affect me more deeply.
I had a relative who had to put blood on his kurta and lie with dead bodies and pretend to be dead to escape mobs in 1947 and crawled to cross the border.
We luckily never lost anyone in killings, loot and rapes but we did lose our ancestral homes both from maternal and paternal sides of family.
Films on these subjects are never just films for me. When I realise reality of what happened, I get affected way more deeply. I have read and studied a lot on partition, communal politics and pogroms in South Asia. Reading and researching on these issues taught me even more of harsh realities.
I entirely loathe religions and their impact on innocent humans. I have no qualms in saying that I recognise numbers and years on basis of pogroms and displacement occured in those years. 1947 is not just a number for me. And I am sure it is not so for others in this region either.
We have histories of intergenerational trauma also because it takes ages to rebuild life or build a new home from a scratch. It's never a one time riot and 'all normal' later. Some of our relatives still have PTSD, anxiety or fear for safety all time or have nightmares of past and fear any mobs, noise or commotion.
They tried their best to suppress memories and keep us shielded from past. They resent me watching films or researching on communal violence.
I am saying all this, to sort of elaborate why I vomitted and could not eat after I watched Lenny baby recreate the murder with her toy, tearing the toy same way as human was torn up in front of her eyes by mob.
Because I know, the reality of what happened was worse. Films are heavily censored and so are books. If they told everything, people would be ashamed of how low humans could fall.
Anyway, leave it. I would not want to deviate from topic. Earth is a haunting film. So is Pinjar, Hey Ram, Gadar, Train to Pakistan etc.
Thank you for telling, atominis. Now, when remembering/rewatching/talking about these movies (I've watched), they have a connection to you, too...
Aamir Khan’s best performance
For sure 💯 I became a fan of him after this movie and my journey with his movies started. I now don’t like his off screen personality but like him as an actor.Aamir Khan’s best performance
Earth wasn't the first Aamir-movie I watched...and I didn't watch all of his movies...so I only can agree that it was a very good performance...and he really showed that it was out of jealousy that he used the religious dividing to get his vengence (again religion used as a tool to vent the own frustration - here = his love/passion rejected but love/passion given to another one, a former friend at that).
There are so many great things in this movie...actually, I could go on & on with my praise (despite the gloomy subject).

Now it makes me even more realize why Khans are superstars and still ruling for decades. They gave such powerful performances and movies right in the beginning of their careers. All three Khans debut movies were hit. The new actors don’t even compare. No wonder none of them have been able to overthrown Khans yet.
