He has no idea! Only because people don't use the word "depression" that doesn't mean they won't suffer from it.

It isn't the fact that he claims that it is a more urban syndrome that makes me doubt his intelligence but how he puts it in words.

Its more of a Gen X vs Millennial understanding of mental health problems, not a class related problem.

Gen X has grown up thinking that it is cowardly to talk about mental health or even admit that it is a problem..Millennials on the other hand admit to it and come across as whiny...and Gen Z has started labelling everything as depression..making it difficult to take it seriously...and there is no middle ground.

Salman Bhai said “he can’t afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional no matter what he is going through.”

How could you not guess? 😳

One of the common skits I’ve come across on TikTok is a Middle Eastern teenager or young adult going to their parents and saying they feel depressed and the parent pulling out their sandals/chapals and saying “come here and I’ll give you something to be depressed about.” It’s shown as a joke but it’s rooted in a lot of reality.

Depression is not a tangible disease like heart disease or cancer or some organ failure. Some people just don’t get the concept of what depression really is. People like Nawaz and Salman, and sadly millions of others, think that depression is just like when they feel sad or mentally exhausted sometimes, which happens to all of us. The difference is sadness and exhaustion passes and more importantly they are not debilitating like depression. Comprehending that difference and the concept of mental disease is a huge challenge for people.

People like Nawaz and Salman saying things like that is dangerous and irresponsible because they have had the exposure to know better. They are just not grasping the concept and instead of accepting that something can exist out of their realm of understanding they are choosing to be disrespectful jerks and even a bully about it publicly.

Highly ignorant and insensitive statement.

Has he forgotten that rural farmers committing suicide is an issue in our country? No it's not a 'rich people disease.'

It's a people disease. The only thing that makes it seem like a rich people problem is that the rich can go out and afford the treatment.

I think affordability should be a focus point in talks about mental health. High time it's made affordable to the masses. Especially after the lock down and the pandemic.

Yesterday I found out a former colleague killed himself. It was incredibly shocking for me. I could have never imagined that someone who seemed so normal and happy from outside could take such a step. High time we stopped trivializing it.
