Very well written! Thank you for actually bringing it up.

Sorry for being a little scrupulous and may be this sounds too technical, while we are on the topic, just wanted to genuinely understand.

Why does Anupama have differential treatment of Ankush-Barkha or Rakhi to an extent of insulting them, especially Barkha? I mean if her value system teaches her to respect elders, is it because they are against Leela who holds higher importance in her life?

But I agree, both need treatment from a psychiatrist.

It flatters me that you think I'm expert enough to answer something like this.

But I also think there is a huge limitation to how much we can delve into her psyche simply because...yes, because she is a fictional character and the result of multiple short-sighted writings stitched together into a hotchpotch mess!

However, if I had to take a guess, I would say that beyond just the concept of 'elder', she considers Baa as a mother figure. She must have gotten married at a young age, and so Baa has been a mother figure for more years than her real mother herself!

Maybe the psychology student, Shriz can take a further stab at this

I don't want to say this.. but natural death would be the only cure for her. Only God can save her . That is the only escape.

No one should suffer as such in real life. Thank God it's a fictional character.

Almost everyone on that show needs to! And if the Shah family goes to the psychiatrist, the psychiatrist is going to need another psychiatrist

Couldn't resist writing this bit

Shah Family Goes To A Psychiatrist

..

The psychiatrist closed the door on the family of three who had come for a consultation.

A sweet looking grandmother; a respectable man with a prominent mustache who was her son; and his own son, looking quite confident in a lurid pink shirt.

He can just do a family counseling session together with all of them.

What could go wrong?

When asked later to recollect what had happened, the psychiatrist could only remember bits and pieces.

....

Vanraj: "So yes, what I keep asking is why do people only remember my 9 year old affair with Kavya? Why don't anyone remember my loyalty for Anupama for 16 whole years? Yes, there was a brief stint with my college girlfriend, and also a couple of other girls...okay 3 other girls...but that's all. But now my current wife is saying she stopped loving me but I don't even understand why. She lost a small modeling project because I was protective about her. Ah, you do so much for one person, and they turn back and spit on your face. One good thing is without her distraction, I can truly see I loved Anupama all along. She gives me peace. I've finally understood what true love is. It's the one who gives you peace"

Toshu: "I'm not like Papa here, I have never cheated on my wife. Yes, there was that one-off incident with a girl when my wife was pregnant but men have physical needs, you understand, you're a man! This is a case where I loved her but she didn't love me back. Not the genuine kind of love.

She never supported my genius start-up ideas and that's why they never worked. When I was paralyzed, yes she stayed with me for 2 years, but that's because she was afraid of what people will think. The moment I recovered, she left me"

Baa: "So I was cursing Anupama for the 141th time, because it was all her fault, but don't misunderstand me, I do love her.."

At some point, the psychiatrist remembered screaming and running towards the door.

....

Seeing the psychiatrist leave, Toshu, Vanraj and Baa looked at each other.

Toshu: "Areee, what happened to that man?"

Vanraj: "Yeah I thought he had 40 years of experience? I thought he'd be a good one"

Baa: "Yeah if he can't handle normal people like us, how did he even stay in this job for these many years?"

...

I'm feeling bad for the psychiatrist or rather any professional who has to deal with this Tamashah clan 😆

I think in general, the differential treatment stems from an instinct to protect the loved ones. Unknowingly, we may all do this in our real lives too. Of course not to the extent shown on tv shows.

Like you noted, baa holds high importance to her, infact even more than her own birth mother. So, she retorts to anyone badmouthing baa, but chooses to remain mute when baa badmouths others. Ankush-Barkha are outsiders in her mind and she jumps to protect her family at the cost of disrespecting A & B. Here her value system rulebook gives her that permission because she is protecting her family, which is of higher priority.

However, something that I do not understand and loathe - is how she encourages young ones to disrespect others. Not reprimanding for mistakes is a form of encouragement. Ex- when Barkha was introduced to her kids, I recall pakhi made comment on Barkha’s style of dressing or something in poor taste and everyone giggled like idiots. Ditto with CA, she calls Vanraj, moochwaale uncle, everyone enjoys the joke Many many such instances where she allows younger ones to disrespect others, that too selectively. Nobody can say anything to baa. That’s hypocrisy along with bad parenting ( & everything that’s wrong in this world)

Oh well, I don’t think the writers analyze as much as we do.

Ah the number of times I have thought there is a huge mismatch between the level of thought and depth posted in the comments vs. the actual show!
