I think what this quote is trying to say is that we can gain from every experience we have. In the case of painful ones, the benefits just don't register immediately!

When you call it darkness, you’re at risk of holding yourself accountable. You get caught up in a vicious cycle of self blame. When you call it a lesson, you give it purpose which allows you to let go of any self blame.
