Vinod Khanna was hardly a model. Was he? I thought he came from FTII.

Male modelling was hardly big in India in late 60s or 70s when VK debuted.

In contrast Deepak Parasher had won Mr India, did some films like Nikah but flopped both in films and TV.

Vinod Khanna wasn't a model or from FTII. As the story goes Vinod Khanna was spotted at a party by Sunil Dutt's friend who promptly dragged an exhausted Dutt from home to meet him. But upon meeting Khanna, he was immediately won over and signed Vinod Khanna to play the villain in the film he was making. In Sunil Dutt's words "I made the film to make my brother a star. But Vinod Khanna became the star instead." The two of them maintained a cordial relationship ever after. When Sunil Dutt was in financial difficulties and wanted to make a new masala film to recover, it was Khanna who agreed to play the second lead to the ageing Dutt. Likewise when Khanna decided to follow Osho, he held the press conference at Dutt's production house.
